i asked a question about your old vs new art direction, but it was never answered, do you all pick the easier questions to answer?

Nope, but we do tend to ignore the people who insult us anonymously. Nice try though, peanut. -Steve

After bead blasting the gap area of my Big Dipper (taping off the outer hub area with the logos), I'm forced to ask you to consider a manatee inspired plastic. Just a thought from a fan. I'm 33 with a horribly stressful job and your products let me chill like no other. Thank you, for super real

Definitely hear you on the stressful job. Been there. It's tough with plastic to go wide, as the wider it goes the more they are susceptible to vibe. There's a nice ratio that you want to try to stay within for plastic. -Chris

So technically is Alec's new sig a Heavensentyoyo X CLYW collab?

Technically the first yoyo is Heaven Sent 'powered by' CLYW. -Chris

Steve, is it true that you used to throw your fixed axels so hard that they would catch fire or turn black or something like that?

Yeah. I used to actually burn the wood. At 1999 Worlds there was a "Fixed Axle World Championship" and a company donated like two dozen wooden yoyos for us to use (as well as the trophies, which were pretty cool but I sold mine a few years ago, argh). But we had no wax to wax our strings, so I was burning an axle on like every other throw. I finally struggled through the event and took 2nd place, but ended up killing like 7 or 8 yoyos in the process, ha ha. -Steve

Should we expect a grind friendly finish on the new Chiefs?

They are being finished and anodized by our usual place here in the US, so yes. -Steve

Do u like Mexican candy?

Not 100% sure I've had any, other than the gum they have in a bowl on the counter of this one Mexican restaurant we go to sometimes. -Steve

Will there be other colors of Basecamp hats besides black?

We sold out of the navy and red at worlds. So once we sell all of the black ones we will try to get new colors. -Chris

Just got my moonshine and I absolutely love it. I was wondering if you could elaborate on the design process and how both companies contributed? Thanks

Glad you like it! Basecamp was a collaboration in so many ways, but not the usual ones. Normally when you hear "collaboration" in the return top industry it means that two companies did a mash-up of a couple of their favorite models. We did it with C3yoyodesign and the H5xChief, and while that sort of thing can be super fun, it's not what we set out to accomplish with Basecamp.
Both CLYW and YoYoFactory approach everything very differently. YYF has always been a brand that sought to bring new people into yoyoing by creating champions and heroes for them to look up to, while CLYW was a brand for the people who were already here and focused more on art and creativity. YoYoFactory made a lot of yoyos and put them in a lot of hands, CLYW made a tiny amount of yoyos that were generally difficult to obtain. I would argue that the two companies combined are one perfect company, ha ha. And it's with that general idea in mind that we decided to combine what we felt were the best aspects of both companies into one side project that gave us both the chance to step outside of our usual way of doing business. YoYoFactory gets to focus more on fun and creativity and we get the benefit of a scale that is impossible for a company our size. And in this new playground, we all get to hang out, have an amazing time, and create products that neither company would ever have done on their own.
The Expedition was a straight mash-up. Designed entirely by Chris, it pulls features from the Orca, the Puffin 2, the Shutter, and the Aviator. It's a pretty fantastic contest model, and I'm excited to start seeing it on stage.
The Jackknife was designed entirely by Hans, and it's his interpretation of what a CLYW return top looks and feels like. It's always neat to find out what your stuff looks like through someone else's eyes, and the Jackknife is so incredibly cool and fun.
The Moonshine was designed by Chris and I, at Ben's request. He had the idea to do a slimline, responsive throwback model, and left it up to Chris and I to figure it out. I started with the snappy response of a Cold Fusion with fresh Brake Pads as my goal, and the profile of the Cherry Bomb because it was a throwback to my own personal history in the yoyo industry. I wanted lots of room for artwork, and Chris and I went back and forth a little but it was mostly his design.
Basecamp is 100% uncharted territory for both companies. Neither of us have ever done a full brand collaboration like this, and it's an incredible opportunity for both of us to get creative and silly and fun. Glad we have your support, and hope you stick with us! -Steve

Is it worth to get a Borealis because I've never gotten a CLYW yoyo before and I'm dying to get one? I've never been able to afford one but I want to save my money to help my mom pay bills even though I'm 17. I help my mom right?

Help your mom. And email me at thelodge@clyw.ca. -Steve

Did you guys made yeti 2 as many as big dipper? Will there be a dyed version of yeti 2 in the future?

Yep, we made plenty! Haven't made plans yet for a dyed version, but if CJ is up for it we'd love to do it. :) -Steve
