What happened to the Kitchy Encomienda anodization deal?

I didn't know we had a deal? I think Chris said something to him on Instagram like "yeah, we should send you some parts and get some samples" and that was pretty much the entire discussion. -Steve

Are you willing to have a 3A player as a tester for some of your yoyos? Like how you sent someone a Sasquatch?

Well, Palli is a 3A player and he gives us pretty amazing feedback already. And I just hooked up an unnamed 3A player with a pair of Sasquatches to get his feedback, so I think we're all set. But thanks! -Steve

In my cooler it normally runs water through the system, but should I use syrup instead? It's freaking hot in California.

With the drought and the water rationing, maybe syrup would be a better choice. -Steve

Ha! So you do sponsor people through their instagram tricks!

If that was truly our sole criteria, we would have stolen Drew Tetz and Ed Haponik a long time ago. -Steve

How and why were the two yoyoers recently added to the team? I think they're great!

How: Chris and I discussed it and got feedback from a few team members and then we called them up and said "Hey man, do you want to do some beatboxing?" and they said "Uh, what? No." and then we said "Just kidding, wanna be on the CLYW team?" and they said yes.
Why: They're amazing people. They have a real fire in their belly for playing and competing and creating new tricks and helping other players. They are neat guys, and we like 'em. -Steve

A mint raised by the wolf canvas was just sold for $250 on ebay, wow!!

See, this is why I don't have a book. -Steve

Do you care if I ask a question unrelated to return tops? If not, who would win in a fight: goku or superman?

Batman. -Steve

I solved your cheap return top conundrum. I will hand carve all of your return tops from my couch in Iowa and I will work for one hamburger per day...but I don't work well under pressure and I get to make my own schedule and I don't work holidays plus I get a floating holiday too. Sound good?

Do you accept veggie burgers? What could I get for a falafel wrap? -Steve

How much is a raised by the wolf canvas worth now in your book?

I don't have a book. But if I did I would say like $160 or something? Maybe? -Steve

The perception of the quality of goods made in China should change. It's similar to racism as goods that are made in different countries have different qualities? Doesn't it depend on the manufacturer itself? Aren't we all human beings?

People have a lot of weird ideas about things. Many of them, frequently, are wrong. -Steve

I am really sorry for asking yet another worlds location but would San Francisco be a good option? Were there three runs of the wooly marmot 2?

San Francisco is a terrible place for a contest. Too expensive, too hard to get around. -Steve

Worlds in Seattle? That would be the only place a vancouverite could drive too, and im a vancouverite 😁 hope it is 😁

I don't think Seattle is on the list right now. -Steve

It seems making your products in North America is part of your branding, isn't it?

No, it's not. Being Canadian is part of our branding. Most of it, actually. -Steve

you guys should make yoyos in canada again

We're trying. It's not as simple as just making a phone call and ordering them. We had entire runs of scrap come from machine shops in Canada. :( -Steve

I see no issue with yoyos made in China(or anywhere). The post about being made in America being the essence of clyw seems silly to me. The essence if clyw is the way you guys interact with fans, and the awesome people that have been chosen to work for and be sponsored by you. Here's a question. ?

Thanks! I know that I really almost never consider country of origin for things that I like. I always focus on the brand and the product quality, but I know that other people have other priorities. -Steve

I've noticed all the "Is Worlds gonna be in ___ questions", and I apologize for adding another into the pile, but what about Atlanta? Its an easily accessible city with Hartsfield Jackson being right in the city. Thanks in advance Steve :)

Atlanta could work well, but to my knowledge we don't have much of a player base or a local organizer who could take the reigns. -Steve

I honestly think the only reason why people prefer their yoyos to be made in North America is because there's this idea that "American" goods will always be superior to China made products. What are your thoughts?

It's a fine notion, but it's wrong. It's especially weird that people demand "Made in North America" considering their the ones that paid for and facilitated the moving of manufacturing overseas to begin with.
If you shop at Wal-Mart, Target, Walgreens, Best Buy, or any other big box store, you are telling millions of companies to make their products overseas so that you can buy them cheaper. I guarantee that each and every human being who has an opinion on where we manufacture our products shops at those stores and buys goods made overseas. So the question becomes: why is it ok for other industries but not for ours?
And to take it a step further, would people care if we made our products in Europe? Germany and Switzerland have some of the most precision machining of any location in the world. If we outsourced manufacturing to Europe would people have the same reaction to it "not being made in North America" or is this purely an issue with Asia? Why is Japanese manufacturing lauded as being so super amazeballs but China can give you the same quality and people call it junk? If we made an inexpensive metal return top in Prague for the Czech market (which has a very hard time affording our products at current US prices) would people be upset about that as well?
Basically, is this purely a matter of "people don't like China" or is this a matter of specific locality? Is it really about quality, or just the perception of quality? That's what we're trying to understand, and that's why I'm opening up this difficult conversation to our fans publicly. -Steve

I don't want any yoyos you currently make to be made in China, I think if you are going to make a Chinese made YOYO, you outright go into the Chinese culture with it. You name it the Panda and tell everyone this is your cost effective CLYW metal and it's for the people who can't usually afford clyw

I think co-opting Chinese culture just to take advantage of their manufacturing is a little weird. -Steve

Please don't change the finish on the solids! I love it! Can't put my Sasquatch and Puffin down because of it. Feels soooo smooth.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-changes! -David Bowie

"Made in Shenzhen" CLYWs will never be the same as the One Drop made ones, even they are made similarly. Please, if you intend to go low cost, please also keep some machining with your American / Canadian manufacturers because that's what I feel the essence of CLYW really is.

You're right, they would never be "the same". But they *could* be just as good. I'm not sure if you understand how much better the manufacturing in China is versus most of North America. Not to say One Drop isn't fantastic...they are! But to say that you can only make something well if you make it in North America is a special kind of American exceptionalism that is simply false.
No matter what else we decide to do, we'll NEVER stop making return tops in North America. There are just too many benefits, and we like working with One Drop. It's a great, no muss no fuss relationship and we can count on the quality without any extra effort on our part. That is worth the premium price!
But as we grow the company we want to be a stepping stone to get more people into playing with return tops, and only offering a top-end product isn't going to do that. So, we have to figure out how to keep the integrity of CLYW intact but come up with a lower priced product. That doesn't mean "mass market" pricing, but at least lower than where we are.
We have no solutions, but we're having the conversation and we want our fans to be part of it. :) -Steve

CLYW should try not to become a Canadian company that ships Made in China return tops from the United States.

Why not? If you're going to throw down a strong opinion, back it up for me please! -Steve
