I like how you guys like to be different and experiment with stuff but recently your color choices on your return tops have been pushing it too much. From the names and weird color patterns it really starts to ruin the beauty on your throws. The furthest you guys should go wack with is zip zap rap.

I don't understand how anyone thinks that "Horseshoe Bay" is somehow weirder than "Electric Bacon". -Steve

Steve please compete in a yoyo contest. I want to see that old school flavor return. Do it for me. PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSEEEE!

LOL, I soooo can't hang with the new kids anymore. -Steve

When will the 7075s sell on your site, and do you have a set price yet? Would love to grab something. Also, since you had a 60% rejection rate... any date on those Fool's Gold 7075s? ;)

Yes, they will sell on our site. No, we don't have a price set yet. Yes, there will be Fool's Gold. No, they will not be available for a while. -Steve

To follow up on the last question. I understand anodizers get backed up, and you have to use more than one of very few. But, can't you tell them not to repeat signature colorways used previously by other companies? Can't you request your own colors when you use an anodizer?

Oh, you make it sound so easy. It's not. ;(
1. Anodizers do not care. Not at all. Not even a little bit. If you say "Oh, and can you not do this color for any other yoyo company?" they will heartily ignore you.
2. It's impossible to know what other company did a similar or same colorway before you or even at the same time as you, since the process of getting anodized parts, assembling, testing, packaging, soliciting, shipping, and releasing is so long. Basically, there is no way to find out until it's too late and then...oh well.
So we pick our own colors, without basing them off anyone else, and still there is absolutely no guarantee that someone hasn't *just* gotten those colors shipped to them, or the anodizer won't put those on someone else's return tops at the same time as yours, or that the anodizer won't say "Hey, that looked great, I'm going to do this combo for these other guys too!". Plus you have anodizers who will do a ton of one-offs just because, I'm not even kidding, they get bored. We are currently sitting on a ton of one-offs that we'll be releasing eventually that we never ordered, but the anodizer got bored with the colors we picked and decided to do something different.
So, while I appreciate how ardently you want us to try and "defend our colorways" it's quite literally impossible. Instead we just pick what we pick, try to be happy with what we get, and do our best to just keep telling the story that we want to tell.
At the end of the day, we just love making these things and we hope other people do to. What color it all ends up eventually is pretty minor, to us at least. -Steve

It might be none of my business but how did Duncan get the rights to your creation of 5a?

They paid for the patent, and in return I assigned it to them in perpetuity. In retrospect it was a terrible decision, but when you're young and someone is willing to foot the bill for a patent you can't afford, you tend to go for it. -Steve

I know you just had a big release but what's next on the list? And possibly when?

Next up is a couple of 7075 releases, direct from the CLYW site, and then some Gnarwhals for retailers.
Speaking of anodizing (see the question below), here's a little peek behind the curtain for you: We ran two small batches of 7075 Arctic Circle 2s and 7075 Bonfires as a special CLYW website exclusive. Thanks to anodizing, we had a 60% reject rate. That's a full 60% of both runs combined that are Fool's Gold now, purely because of anodizing.
Aint life grand? -Steve

Your colorways are looking just like YoyoFactory's lately. Are you trying to look like them on purpose now? Every berry smoothie looks like a YoyoFactory galaxy.

We are using three different anodizers, and one of them is one of the same anodizers that YoYoFactory uses. There are very, very few anodizers in the US who can consistently do quality work on return tops, and you'd be amazed at how many companies use the same very few shops. It's not a decision to "look like anyone else", it's a decision to "not let our production get stalled for 4 months because an anodizer got backed up". -Steve

Can the shape of a yoyo affect how easily a rejection can be done. EX. I can do a rejection more easily on my AC2 than my Orca.

Yep. -Steve

I want to get the orca in zip zap rap but my sister said its a girl color but I really want to get in that color what should I do?

Tell your sister I think her opinion is ridiculous, and then you should buy it anyway. -Steve

What do you mean by the death of 5A?

It went from being the #2 division right behind 1A, and containing some of the best variety in play and general creativity in the world, to being something that no one gave a crap about. It's not being promoted because Duncan won't promote it, and they won't let anyone else promote it either. So it's dead in the water, and I'm super bummed about it. -Steve

How does the chief play compared to the avalanche?

Lighter and faster. The Chief feels like a kiss on the cheek and the Avalanche feels like a warm hug. -Steve

Who in CLYW makes desicion about sponsorship? Is it all Chris, or do you also have a say?

It's a conversation between Chris and I. Sometimes we involve other members of the team, if it's someone that we know they hang out with, to get another perspective. -Steve

Favorite division of Yoyoing? 1a, 2a, 3a, etc.

I love watching 2A, prefer watching 1A, am hella sad about the general death of 5A, think 3A is pretty sweet, and do not enjoy 4A at all. -Steve

If you had to fight one of the things your return tops are named after in real life, what would it be?

I'd fight a Gnarwhal. Because I have the advantage on land.
Take that, Gnarwhal. -Steve

Favorite sandwich shop and sandwich?

Don't have a favorite shop, but a good fried shrimp po' boy in New Orleans is my absolute favorite thing ever. -Steve
