Favorite sports moment?

The most shocking sports moment in my life was watching Tyson got knocked out by Buster Douglas. No moment has left me more shocked.

What do you think of the quality of football coaches in the KCAL

This is a horrible question to answer. I respect each of the coaches as individuals and have good relationships with each. Granted I have not met the coach at Atchison but I hope to at Media Day. They don't get paid enough to do what I would expect them to do. There are some AD's that don't know much at all about sports to help support and build the programs as they need to be. I honestly compare everything to Piper from AD down to facilities but allow me to draw you to the very flaw in how KCAL schools are structured compared to Piper. Piper has a youth program that starts at a very young age. No such thing in KCK nor would it be feasible considering you have little idea where the kids will land in high school. Not all the coaches are dedicated to their programs. Like it or not a football coach in high school to meet my or anyone's lofty expectations would be a year around job. I think maybe 2 or 3 schools participated in 7 on 7. Not good enough if you intend to try and compete. Look for 8th grade and possibly high school 7 on 7 teams sponsored by SHUKC to help with that.

Who do you blame for KCK athletes low act scores

We are rolling up the sleeves tonight. Blame is an ugly word because it is not a simple answer. I am sure many would love to hear me say the school district. The harder is answer is parents. The hidden factor is the economic situation faced in KCK. A lack of resources not just in the school but in the house holds. A mother working 2 or 3 jobs to keep the lights on is not in a position to work with her kids and prepare them for school. Successful ACT scores are rooted in the foundation laid pre-K. If a large percentage of students in Kindergarten walk in behind then the whole class is now behind and the ugly cycle begins. I really am on board with programs like the Urban Scholastic Center because I am sure it helps. I could write a book on this subject. There are a bunch of great parents out there but there are some that need just as much education as the students themselves. I think the results from Sumner Academy are good but they are kicking kids out that don't perform which can inflate numbers. No good answer for this but many theories on how to make it better. Starts early.

What do you think of grey shirt offers to a young senior from a prominent D1 school that he wants to attend?

First a grey shirt is a valid offer from a school. Vernon Vaughn was a grey shirt and I honestly knew nothing about it when they brought it up. I look at it as a bit of a deferral of a scholarship spot for a student. The student will not enroll until the spring semester and will not be officially on the team until the following year. This status is a test of patience for some and it really depends on how focused the player is in being on their own and not on the team. There is typically a tight group of grey shirts that stick together so it depends on the kid. Most kids however have a desire to play now and you have to also be prepared for a possible red-shirt the following year which is a lot of time to wait. Depends on the school and situation but it is an offer that hopefully opens the door to others which may get the school to take the grey shirt off the table. You are limited as well how many hours you can take. You must maintain freshman status when you join the team. Great situation if you want to get your degree and possibly a masters.

Can you broadcast any Ward games? I feel broadcasting the first skin would be something spectacular!

10/18 against sumner academy is currently on the schedule.

What games are you most looking forward to watch this year?

This was the root of my problem. So spoiler alert because the games I really want to see are probably going to be games that we broadcast. Bonner vs Piper, Schlagle vs Wyandotte, Wyandotte vs Washington, Piper vs Tonganoxie, Basehor vs Tonganoxie.

Have you ever had an act of racism committed against you

I grew up as a half white and half black kid so yes and it may have been worse. You see to white people mixed people are black. To black people mixed people are white. So really you can't win. I grew up on 10th and freeman so unfortunately there was much that I had to face because of what was described above.

Who are the best athletes you have covered the last few years?

Vernon Vaughn, Benny Parker, Johnathan Jackson, Steve Williams, J'Veyon Browning, Ben Johnson, Anna Deegan, Jennifer Whiteledge.

What is the best vacation you've been on?

St. John's. We stayed on St. Andrews I think it was on a resort but we took a trip to St. John's island and the white beach was off the charts.

If someone wanted to get involved with SHUKC aka helping report things in every sport except basketball. Would that be possible?

Yes. I would like to discuss what you would like to report but I am very open to this. Participation especially from students and parents is encouraged.

If you were on death row what would your last meal be?

Kc strip from j Alexander's. Carrot cake right before I go.

Would you view it disrespectful if other players on another team came and ran on your bleachers, at your field?

You can only be disrespectful if you are doing something disrespectful. Running on bleachers I don't believe to be bad. I would be guilty of this myself since I bring players from all schools together to practice. I get rivalries. I had more than a few near altercations with players when I was in high school. I thought it was silly. I get it though but I wouldn't use the word disrespectful. Basehor and Piper are not as accessibe which draws the players to Bonner to work. Peeing on the logo at the fifty is disrespectful.

Are you covering track this year? I know some great track athletes.

I will work to do more this year. I posted some results last year and followed the state tournament. AD Doug Key at Piper was great about sending me information last year. I will be hoping to get more AD's and coaches to do this as well. I also think broadcasting a track tournament is not out of the realm of possibility. We will see.

What players would you like to see take more control of the game on the floor?

Joe Schneider at Lansing. Keeping in mind what he did last year was just fine. He had some seniors that could shoulder the load. This also seems silly to think for a player that was named the league poy and showed up on state tournament and state recognition teams. This should show how much I think of his game and what I think he can do. I am also curious to see if Luke Long at Piper can take the reigns and be the leader for the Pirates.

Are you covering soccer this year!? If so you should be looking at piper to take state!!

I would like to find a person or two to write about the other sports. I won't be promising to attend soccer matches. I will be reporting and following results. I will commit now though to naming a soccer player of the year at our award ceremony.

What's your definition of a hometown hero?

Someone that excels at the highest levels and then comes back on a consistent bases to support his hometown. Darryl Stuckey took a step forward with being just that last week.

Who's the scrappiest teams in the KCAL & KVL?

Good question and I will define scrappy as a team that is going to work and will not want to go away. KCAL will be Atchison. I am finding out the dedication of this team and the town really because of the youth that is showing up at our workouts. It is going to pay off for them. Lansing would be my team for the KVL for some of the same reasons. It starts with their QB Krystian Abbott who is developing a good confidence in his game. He is a leader and will have 2 more seasons to develop it which could mean good things for Lansing in my opinion.

What do you think Washingtons record would be do to only havin one good linemen

Harmon, Sumner, Schlagle they will likely be favored. Atchison could be a good game to watch. Mill Valley will be a young team so that could be another toss up. Lansing they will likely be a dog. I don't know their preseason games but I would set the over under at 4 wins.

What do you think about ward basketball this season?

Really depends on if they find a point guard. Henley and Brull will lead the way for the cyclones who built some moment toward the end of last year. If tucker can step up and be a solid third option then we will be cooking with oil.

If you could put together your own KVL basketball dream team who would be on it and which KVL coach would you have coaching them?

First let me make some bulletin board material. The kvl is going to crush the kcal in the all star game. Younger, Schneider, Bailey, Harper Voorhees. Long and brull would be on the team. This is not official. Team is so good I could and will coach it.

How do you think brenden dotson will develop?

I think his next step is developing some swag. He has the tools it is just a matter of being confident enough in them to go and perform. I think he also need to dedicate himself to being the PG for this team. I don't know the current depth chart but he should have a goal to start. The second part of that is being a true point guard. Assist to turnover ratio. He has the ability to get to the basket so his assist totals should be good.

Who are your favorite people to follow on twitter?

Jay bilas and Eric Thomas. Chad Johnson is ok. I hope that none of the athletes I follow are overly entertaining on Twitter. Twitter is the worst enemy of dumb athletes. I won't sugar coat. If you want to play college ball and you are talking like an idiot on Twitter you can kill that dream. Represent yourself on social media as you would in real life.
