Loved hearing a story about a young man I don't know. He looked pretty intimidating to me. I will have my eye out for him this year. I don't think Salsgiver blows smoke so that is a very good endorsement.

Do you think Washington can be for real? Their coach seems a little full of it.
Full of energy. He didn't mention it but they had Wyandotte on the ropes. That is a going to be a good matchup and challenge for Wyandotte. You have to understand how bad that situation was before he arrived. I would be excited to if I resurrected that type of culture after just 1 year.
What question(s) did you not get answered at Media Day that you wanted the answer for?
I don't know that anyone dodged any questions. I need to work on my questions probably. I lobbed a lot of softballs. Really liked listening to the players. Tanner Huntington from Atchison and Jake Phillips from Basehor were a couple of my favorites.

Breakout defensive players this season in the KVL?
Won't be a breakout but Cory McCleary will get the attention I failed to give him last year. Levy will stand out at Tongie again. I won't name the givens.

He is an incredibly insightful man. I am not sure if this question comes from a student or not but I could see how a student can misinterpret his demeanor. I really do enjoy listening to him talk about his team and players.
What do you think about bonner springs football this year
I am optimistic about it. They look to be strong up front on both sides of the ball. I heard the scrimmage highlighted a much needed running game from players other than Jordan Jackson. Jonah Freese is a player I am watching to break out.
Can you give me the standings of the kaw valley league for football?
I possibly would change my mind after hearing Mill Valley talk today. Tonganoxie, Piper, Mill Valley, Bonner Springs, Lansing, Turner, Basehor, Ward.
What are your thoughts on Ward football after media day?
I really liked what Dorian had to say about creating a winning culture through some competitive exercises at the school. I am still expecting some wins from this program. Coach Dorian has done a good job getting athletes to come out and play. Just a matter now if they perform.

Who impressed you most at Media day? Why?
Players I think Jake Phillips stood out. Coaches is damn hard. Salsgiver answered a few of my questions before I could even ask them. I actually took that as a sign that I am doing my job.

piper couldn't control the glass last year vs basher-linwood, now basehor has added a 6'6 post player how is it any different this year
Comparing Muldoon physically to Ben Johnson is silly from the first game. Second game Basehor shot the ball well. If Basehor is on then they will be very tough. Harper will be a handfyl for Muldoon.

We have discussed this one. Depends on how many threes basehor hits. Piper will own the glass and I think will be able to control the game. All bets off if those four guards go off. I would pick Piper.

Not sure if we are talking about offense or defense. I will ask about this person tomorrow at media day.

do high school coaches have an obligation to try to help their athletes get recruited?
No. That is a bad misconception I have found in all my research. A coach can hurt a player by not making film available, not providing feedback on a player or not keeping stats. These are 3 basic items that you should expect from your coach to enable you as a player or parent to market yourself for a college scholarship. Now with the radio and TV broadcast we have we will give coaches a platform to talk about players but with information readily available it is up to the player and the parents to market your skills to colleges. If they have connections and are willing to endorse you then that is a bonus.
Is it just me, or is AAU basketball hindering the sport at the high school level?
It has forced coaches in high school to adapt. Their players get used to the styles of their aau teams. Bringing that all back together each year is a chore to say the least. Although getting to play that much against good competition only raises the stakes skill wise. The good coaches can use it. Others who still try and force a round peg into a square hole will struggle.
How often do you think about your future?
Live for now. Wishing or thinking your life away is a mistake.
