What is the most interesting conversation you overheard in a restaurant?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
Two people were having a discussion about climate change. By the sounds of it they agreed with my views, and were discussing good books.
Then a woman, of the kind who always tries to stop serious and deep topics being discussed, butted in to say ‘Well, anyway, cheers’ and that talk was over :(

Ryan Reynolds or Ryan Gosling?

I’m a 36 year old man. If I knew who they were, I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t care.

How do you talk to people in a group? How do you prevent from being left out or talking too much? Is there a way to keep a balance?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
If (as happens at work) they are talking nonsense I say little or nothing. With friends I listen and only speak when there is something to say, as I don’t talk for the sake of just talking.

If someone gave you a blatantly recycled gift, how would you react?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
I’d be for it if I could make better use of it than the first person! I have no problem with regifting if it leads to people making more use of what they have.
I’d be offended if it reveals that the person doesn’t know me and hasn’t cared enough to find out, but regifting isn’t bad as such!

Is showing up on time more important than working hard?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
It is to managers, yes!
Working from home I got my job done in 5-6 hours and spent the rest of the time cooking and browsing the internet.
Now I’m in the office again, my biggest challenge is looking busy! My work is faultless but they don’t think that. My manager spends more time staring at me than doing his work, insofar as he has any.
But myself, I find that I can easily get my work done and do it well, and surely that’s what matters most?

As a male do you get any respect for being polite, honest and friendly rather than successful?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
I don’t think I get a lot of respect because I’m not an ‘important’ person at work. I have earned some respect by taking part in athletics and doing well, but my qualities as a person haven’t had much impact either way.
I don’t think people are judged by who they are, because society cares more about what they are, as in whether they are ‘successful’.
I don’t know if I’m treated differently to a woman, but there probably is more expectation that men will be rich and powerful, or have done something wrong if they are not.

What has happened to "ask again/keep asking" ? ~ is someone on the 'ask-team' trying to wreck this totally altogether ?

Probably, alongside this rash of mindless shoutouts, a moneyspinner? Because our having good discussions doesn’t benefit their ‘investors’ and is thus worthless to them.

Have you ever been truly frightened by a movie that was not marketed as a horror movie?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
In this film

The homophobic parents and the abusive fiancée were terrifying. Especially since we see their point of view and that they aren’t evil, and believe themselves to be doing the right thing, which is somehow even worse.

What is one thing that is not as exciting as everyone says it is?

avadroitII’s Profile PhotoAva Banana
Taking magic mushrooms! It was actually weird & nasty.
I think next year I will go to San Francisco & smoke dope but I won’t get stoned, just have a weak dose to get buzzing.

What's something you're not very good at but enjoy doing anyway?

Baking, & cooking.
The pancakes I made on Shrove Tuesday were scorned by just about everyone who saw the picture, but tasted good! So it looks like I’m actually not bad at it.

How do you arrange the items in your fridge? Does everything have a set place or does stuff just pile in randomly?

jigsaw20216838’s Profile PhotoJigsaw
By where it fits easily, and with a tendency for things near the end of their life to be near the front where I remember to see to them.
I like to think I’ve got a system that is orderly but not so fussy as to forget that order is there to make life easier, not harder; the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath.
The most noteworthy thing is that there are five bottles of stout in there! But I feel I haven’t earned them as I ate too much & worked out too little this week. Next week, after making more effort, I look forward to clearing that space!

As you are probably aware, a ‘lexicon’ is a collection of terminology from a specific area of work or knowledge, and this can sometimes form a way of speaking that is unintelligible to those outside the field. Do you have/ever use such a lexicon? If so what is it based around?
