Why did you leave the Catholic Church and become agnostic?

StephenInd’s Profile PhotoStephen Ind
I don't know why, my family stopped attending church when I was 11 so although I still went to a Catholic school and faith was vaguely in the air, I drifted into atheism. So I never made an actual adult decision to join or to leave.
From around 2015 religious themes came more into my thinking, I'm not sure why, but I stopped being an atheist without explicitly joining anything and here I still am, a woolly in between. And I've been made welcome in every church I've vaguely drifted into and out of in whatever place I happened to be in that Christmas or Easter.
I repeat :)

Have you ever been called up to serve on a jury, or done jury duty? [Doug]

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
No, I haven't actually!
I'd be interested in other people's opinions but I have no experience of it, save listening to Rob Titchener's trial in The Archers.

What will you be doing for Holy Week?

StephenInd’s Profile PhotoStephen Ind
I'm an agnostic but as I'm an ex-Catholic I still respond to things like that, more so since a brush with illness (I had hypothyroidism for years and only got diagnosed and treated in 2015).
I'll be walking in Shropshire and attending churches along the way, listening to an audiobook of the complete works of AE Housman.

I don't know if you've read Housman but here's one of my favouries by him for Easter.

Imagine walking the hills, listening to that, then enjoying good fellowship with people in the evening, it's ideal :)
Unless it rains!

It’s Sunday! Any special plans?

I've got plans, fam!
I'm going here.
https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/kinver-edge-and-the-rock-houses
The views are said to be fantastic & it's possible that the houses in caves inspired Bilbo's hole.
In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the ends of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a dry, bare, sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit-hole, and that means comfort...

If you could fire anyone from their current job, who would you fire and why?

tashaste’s Profile PhotoThea
Boris Johnson or disgraced former defence secretary Liam Fox, how the hell either of them has a job is beyond me.
It says a lot for the sheer chutzpah of our ruling class that they dare show their faces, never mind anything else. I'd admire their self-confidence in bullshitting their way through if it weren't tragic.

What’s the best place to go to on the first date?

The museum, I often go there with my girlfriend because it's free (though we make a donation, it still costs less than most places).
And if they don't like museums, they can fuck off!

Who is the winner on to the journey of a Happy Life with consideration to a well disciplined mind Vs a spontaneous free hearted soul?

Surely it depends on who you are, a person who is naturally spontaneous won't be happy with a regular life and a person (like me) who is orderly and prefers everything just so, won't appreciate the life of a gypsy because it has its good point but it doesn't suit us.
If only there was a Rush song about balance :)
If you know about the Myers-Briggs typology (look it up if you don't) Rush are very much INTJ, like me. And it's about balance between the extremes of a civilised, cultured but dull life and a wild, free but perilous life.

Do you favor an active lifestyle or are you a couch potato?

I like an active lifestyle fam, if I won the lottery I wouldn't go to my day job ever again but I'd continue to "work", climbing mountains, volunteering for my environment work, studying purely out of intellectual curiosity rather than to try and get a job.
It's human nature that we need to work, as in make an effort & a sacrifice to gain the only reward worth having. That's why so many rich people are unhappy because they have no purpose to their life.
The mistake society makes is to confuse work with paid employment, whereas in fact many jobs (cold calling peopke to sell them tat, for instance) are less fulfilling than forms of work that aren't paid, such as volunteering for a good cause or caring for ill relatives.
So I get more fulfilment from my outside "work" than from my job & here's my latest trip.

This is where I'll be going at Easter ( I was scouting the area out) as seen from where I was yesterday.

Have you ever lied about your age?

No, I grew up in the era before around 2005 when IDing people wasn't common, I started going to pubs when I was 15 & got served because no one actually asked :)
I'm drinking vodka & mango juice now fam

So, meat wholly engineered in labs could be on our shelves within the next few years. It will be of course cruelty-free and good for the environment. Would you consume it or not, and why? [Doug] https://futurism.com/were-5-years-away-from-lab-grown-meat-hitting-store-shelves/

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I haven't given much thought to this, especially since I've started drinking. I'm a carnivore but I feel vaguely queasy about it though I'm not completely sure why.
Best to see theTV series but you doubtless recall this :)

Do you think love grows gradually and/or needs a conscious "build-up" to occur, or it strikes you like a lightning when you least expect it – even against your own will? Why?

In the (highly recommended) One Night In Winter by Simon Montefiore, two characters have an affair and reflect on the fact that they can do this because it's World War 2 and they are far away from their spouses, but they can't be together permanently. When both their families get into big trouble (no spoilers, I encourage you to read the book and find out!) Hercules Satinov is upset that he sleeps with Dashka Dorova and is passionately about her but can't be with her all the time, and he manages to simultaneously love her and his wife, in different ways.
"He hated Genrikh [Dashka's husband] because true possession is to share the fabric of someone else's life, he decided; it's about proximity; love as geography. He longed to know the soft sound of her sleeping and the sleepy smell of her hair in the morning; he wanted to be standing next to her when she brushed her teeth and at the foot of the stairs when she descended them".
Not only do they both return to their spouses, but several characters in the book decide they prefer the first kind of love you specify to the second, but that doesn't mean they don't feel a surge of passion.
While they made their decision, a wild passion can lead to a deepening and broadening love, or it can not.

It’s Earth Hour today. How would you spend one hour in the dark?

I won't, but if you want to do something for the planet I encourage anyone to support www.treesforlife.org.uk or even go on one of their working holidays, I've been on one & I'm going on another in September.
We know what the problems are, and Donald Drumpf and Scott Pruitt won't help solve them, but you can see what can be achieved here. Our predecessors planted trees in a fenced-off area in 1991 and looking at both sides of the fence, you know that people who work together to achieve something constructive can get things done.
As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said “No Trespassing.”
But on the other side it didn’t say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

Inspired by a reply from @tashaste : Here, "putting pineapple on pizza" has joined "Marmite" & "the pronunciation of scone" as trivial topics publicly argued across media. Do you like to join in with these and express an opinion, or, like me, are you suspicious it's a marketing invention? [Doug]

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I like it myself, I don't get into arguments about it though.
I haven't been reading my etiquette guide lately so I don't know what others think :)

For years, people over here had been eating ham pizza (and other products) without realising the ham was turkey. Now, legally, it has to be labelled eg "Ham* Pizza (made with turkey ham). " Do you think such regulations stifle business or are useful for the public? [Doug]

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
Yes, it should be labelled, there should be strict regulations requiring sellers to label country of origin, ingredients or lack thereof, halal or otherwise.
People can make up their own minds but there are no grounds for withholding the infirmation. I don't think, for instance, there's anything intrinsically wrong with eating a horse but the horsemeat scandal proves that the regulations are too lax as people weren't being told what they are eating.
Give people the information & allow them to decide, I also think it should be compulsory for firms to display their hygeine rating.
