I get really confused by AskFMmers regularly changing their names and accounts. I keep losing track of who it is I'm talking to. Have you noticed this and does it affect your enjoyment of the site, or are you unfazed?

Yes, I get confused by Diana and others :)
I can generally figure out who they are so I don't mind. I respect people's want and need to be anonymous if they're avoiding certain people or if they want to keep things private.
I'd like more good asks and likes but I'm generally enjoying it ;)

What did you have for breakfast today?

I din't have breakfast, I did my environmental walk then lunched on a leek and potato soup (homemade obvs), bread and a sticky toffee pudding.
Absolutely no carbs here!

What nursery rhymes or poems do you remember that seem just plain creepy now when you think back?

The one about the little boy thatSanta Claus forgot, my brother used to reliably cry at that one.
WHY NOT STOP RECITING IT, THEN?
It's a pretty weird message to send to a child, to this day I've got no idea why parents think it's ok to say things like that to their children.

What is the worst 21th century gadget?

All those pointless, unused apps that drain battery from devices, so the useful fuction of said devices can't be used.
My phone ran out at a crucial time yesterday and I was fuming, but nit as much as the people I let down, and I wondered why all this utter shite that I never use is a default and I have to go to the effort of removing it myself?

Do you think psychologists, therapists and psychiatrists who were once battling their own psychological issues or mental illnesses are more likely to have their clients' or patients' best interests at heart? Or does history of mental illness make a person less equipped to help their patients? Why?

It depends, on the one hand someone who has suffered from a particular condition is likely to understand and try harder to help others, but on the other hand, it might lead to the psychiatrist getting too involved and being unable to behave professionally.
Perhaps the best equipped to help are those who have a family member who has a particular condition, say a son who is on the autistic spectrum, and understanding the condition and having the wish to help but being able to take a step back and not get too involved in it and upset by what will inevitably happen.

Do you listen to your parents’ advice?

“You know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen.”

Are you aware of what microsleep is? How often do you experience it, if ever, and how does it interfere with your daily activities?

I'd never heard of it, thanks for telling me!
http://www.sleepdex.org/microsleep.htm
Not heard the word but I have done it, when I worked nights my eyes would involuntarily close. It didn't affect the work I did but it was probably a sign of some prey hardcore health problems.
I'm fairly sure anyone who is experiencing microsleep should get treatment for insomnia, I can't think of anything good about it except it's got a cool word in Italian.
"Dormiveglia is an Italian word used to refer to a mix of sleep and waking. We don’t have an analogous word in English, but this word seems to get at some of what microsleeping is about."

If you weren't doing whatever you are currently doing most days, what would you like to do instead?

I'd certainly like to see my girlfriend more often but due to work and her living in Birmingham (a great city that I love exploring, btw) I don't do anything like enough of that, especially when the cost of train tickets is considered.
This is what I want to do at the weekend as well, I wouldn't mind a life of doing things like this if you're offering :)

I've never been here before, given good weather it will be immense.

Do you judge people based on their knowledge of grammar?

Not since I got an ipad which is too fiddly to do it right without taking hours :)

According to evolutionary psychology, emotions are adaptations: each emotion serves a specific purpose and there are no negative emotions. Does being aware of this fact make unpleasant emotions more bearable in your eyes? Why?

I don't think it does, no. We aren't living in a "natural" world, so doing what we evolved to do may be a bad thing. For instance we are hardwired to eat as much as we can because we have a primal fear of hunger, but that leads some people to become obese.
So it may be that, for instance, anger serves a useful purpose, but not necessarily in a given situation if someone is just full of hatred and rage.
We've reached a point whereby doing what comes naturally isn't necessarily a good thing.

Do you think altered state of consciousness can be intentionally achieved by means other than the use of psychotropic substances? Elaborate, please.

Apart from really mindblowing sex :)
The best thing for altered states of consciousness are rhythmic music as used in a religious ritual. In the Catholic and (I think) Orthodox worship, several senses are stimulated, sight, smell, hearing all at once. and when I visited a Hindu temple it was the same.
Though in some religions such as certain Native American practices drugs are used to enhance this even further, you can still get yourself pretty well focused on "the beauty of holiness" without any substances. And maybe that's why fasting is also often involved before a ceremony.
That and mountain climbing, which will seriously get you going. On a mountain at dawn :)

What do you think you might want to change about yourself or your life next year?

tashaste’s Profile PhotoThea
I want to stop being so exhausted all the time :(
The good bits of my life are in place, notably a very successful trip to Scotland in September.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/scotland
Building on these successes, long-distance walks, mountain climbing. What I'd like to do is not have to work and banish the exhaustion that at times is as bad as when I had my hypothyroidism and is a symptom of working too hard at my day job.
I want to do a walk around Wenlock Edge in Shropshire at Easter, I feel as though I'm getting into a rut and might have a bad winter (and I often delete my questions because I can't think of any answer!) but I'm planning a comeback in 2017 :)

Do you agree that good things come to those who wait?

No, when my boiler broke, rather than ringing for a plumber I just sat and waited and it still isn't fixed!
Joking aside, I don't particularly believe this, it's a very post-war attitude from a time when people expected "authority" to "lead" them and didn't do things for themselves. If they were loyal and did their duty they would get their just deserts, except this generally didn't happen. So rather than waiting I am for getting active and joining up with other people to achieve things.

Have you ever been in a situation that you thought you'd never get out of? What was it (if you're comfortable sharing, obvs.) ?

Yes, an 11-hour flight from Istanbul to Singapore! (After the first leg which was "only" 4 hours and then sitting at Istanbul airport in the early hours of the morning for three hours, not my idea of a night out!
The only consolation was this.
