Thinking of any one of your personal interests, or hobbies: - what is it? - what do you like the most about it? - is it expensive? - does it cause, or bring with it, any difficulties or challenges? - If so, how do you deal with this?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
Unfortunately work occupies so much time that I can't find enough time for my hobby, which is working on my blog.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/photos
It isn't expensive, but it also hasn't won me any money or fame, which is annoying as despite having some great followers (like yourself!) I'd like more people to appreciate my work.
The other problem is that it takes so long to research and write the captions, reading guidebooks and other books and links, and I hope people don't skip past, though if they do they can still see the pictures I suppose.
But it's worth it as a sort of diary of where I've been & what I've done, to show myself and others.

What was a time that advertising worked on you and got you to buy a thing or service?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
Advertising on facebook brought me to this event
http://www.mountainsonstage.com
And I just on Monday attended my fourth, I've been to them all!
I don't mind that sort of advertising because you might call it sinister that they know a lot about my preferences and target me but they're offering me something I want and would gain from, so it's hardly the same as Cambridge Analytica or what Russian bots do.
What I do mind is advertising that is random and any idiot could have told them I wouldn't like it, the advertising equivalent of Ben's posts. For example, I was listening to the Melvins on spotify when I got an advert for that horrible chavvy dance music. Could they not have guessed that, as a fan of the Melvins, I'm not going to want that shit, or do they like Ben just bombard everyone with their shit without paying attention to what people like?
So it is possible to reach me with advertising but only if you have a seriously good product.

To be honest I want peace between us Native British and Dark people, I’m willing to be have a two state solution and offer them a part of our Native land. Do you agree that’s fair and a big offer from me to offer a part of my land to make peace?

How can you offer people anything and be a spokesman when you're on benefits

If people tell you, you're wrong, are you wrong? Kindly elaborate <3

This is interesting, in some cases truth is objective (fire is hot, you will drown in water, predators will eat you) but in other cases, if enough people believe something the force of their belief attains a power of its own.
For instance, a policy (such as free trade or a universal basic income) may be objectively a good thing but the lack of any political will to implement it makes it impractical given how many people are working in the other direction.
On the other hand, the teachings of the Church may or may not be true (I am an agnostic) but the fact that Lech Walesa and millions of others believed in those tenets gave them the willpower to help bring down communism, therefore have had an impact on reality.
When I went to Singapore was reading the autobiography of Lee Kuan Yew because obviously it's biased towards his opinions, but his opinions matter given how much power he had!
Let Graham Greene, the master of this sort of thing, have the last word.
'Surely that is only a legend'.
'There speaks a Protestant' Mr Visconti said. Any Catholic knows that a legend which is believed has the same value and effect as the truth. Look at the cult of the saints'.

I hope you’re well and having a good week! Over the past month, what’s been ... - one hindrance to you? - one help to you ?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
Technology failures have been the biggest hindrance, I bought the tickets for my trip online
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/173300304759/this-is-the-most-interesting-place-in-the-world
And a terrific trip with a film festival and other things I'll blog about later.
Unfortunately when I went to my nearest railway station on Saturday to get the tickets, their ticket machine was bust so I had to go to Crewe, on a Saturday evening, with all the drunks & get my ticket from there!
But I suppose this in itself shows the dangers of overreliance on technology, when if used properly it can be a help?

Do you have a good eyesight?

I think I still do but it's starting to fade, it definitely isn't what it was when I was 21!
I don't think I'll be needing glasses but I would if it got any worse as unlike most bookish people I've always had good eyes & I need that.

What place on earth would you like to live?

Richmond on Thames!
I'd live in a big dockoff Georgian house and spend my time in the museums & art galleries of London, evenings in Richmond Park.
Blogging & travelling would be my activities, I certainly wouldn't lounge round doing nothing but of course I'd be able to quit my job in this imaginary world.
What place on earth would you like to live

Did you ever see a mouse in your house?

No, but I did once hear a mouse/rat in a hotel, what's that all about?!

What is one lesson you have learnt from life that completely changed and transformed you?

I'm afraid I've never learned any lessons :)
Do you like Douglas Adams? (the only wise advice I can give is to read him). Well, Arthur Dent goes to a woman in a cave for advice & this happens.
"It's the story of my life. You see, the quality of any advice anybody has to offer has to be judged against the quality of life they actually lead.
Now, as you look through this document you'll see that I've underlined all the major decisions I ever made to make the stand out. They're all indexed and cross-referenced. See?
All I can suggest is that if you take decisions that are exactly opposite to the sort of decisions that I've taken, then maybe you won't finish up at the end of your life" --she paused, and filled her lungs for a good shout--"in a smelly old cave like this!”

Are there any rhymes, poetry or limericks you learned as a kid that you can still recite? Do share! *Probably should refrain from rhymes that contain the word Nantucket.

I don't know if this counts but I can recite the Nicene Creed from memory from attending mass as a child, although I'm now an agnostic in religion I often attend church services especially traditional evensong in an Anglican church with the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
Although it may not show in the pictures, this walk.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/172565401829/samuel-johnson-grew-so-outrageous-that-to
was an extremely hard & punishing one, and I relaxed at Derby Cathedral at the evensong afterwards, then ate a Chinese meal which was terrific.
It was so warm and relaxing, like being in the tropical heat & then getting into an ocean.
So I'm all for repetition, it seems meaningless mumbo-jumbo for some but to others it is familiar and comforting.

Do you easily forgive those who have hurt you? Does your forgiveness depend on the situation?

If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

What's better, the cake or the frosting?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
Do you mean as in what's called icing in British English?
I like icing more so I eat half the cake, just cake, then I eat the other half with some cake and a lot of icing as I like to eat my favourite things at the end of a meal.
Sorry if this is some deep profound metaphor, but I've answered it literally :)
It's interesting though, is there some kind of difference between those who eat the favourite part first and those who, like me, first eat the things they like least and save the best for last?
Are there two different sorts of people and eating reveals the difference between people's wordview and actions? :)

You've just been attacked!! The object to your right is your only weapon and you're fighting the last person you seen on tv. What's your scenario??

I'm in a life or death struggle against Andrew Marr with the help of two maps of both parts of the Lleyn peninsula in Wales, it's epic stuff this!
