The movies you have watched more than 10 times ??

The film I've seen most is The White Ribbon, set in Imperial Germany just before 1914, and it's a belter.
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2009/nov/12/the-white-ribbon-review
I can't recommend it enough, as it sheds light on the attitudes of the time and the future, and the most fascinating thing is that it was originally shot in colour but then the colour was drained out, which somehow makes it more stark than if it had originally been black & white.
Go & watch it now instead of reading my posts!

Americans will be celebrating Thanksgiving next week. In that spirit, what are you most thankful for today?

I'm thankful that the worst people in Europe buggered off and went to America ;)
On a more serious note, I'm thankful for my health as I still remember when I was ill with my thyroid. I'm often tired from working and doing my interesting things, but at least I can do that as opposed to being too ill to work and being exhausted from the effort of waking up.
Most notably, though I don't do enough of it, I now have the chance to do my work in Scotland with https://treesforlife.org.uk that I do each year. This is a picture of us coming home (11 of us lived in a shared house for a week)
https://treesforlife.org.uk/volunteer/conservation-weeks/accommodation/athnamulloch-cottage/
And I'm glad to have been part of that and to be going back (albeit in a very long time with too much work at the office in between).

What is your dream job? ?

I would divide my time between being an academic/researcher at a university (certainly not teaching any students) and in the summer, doing my work in Scotland planting trees.
The work is obviously physically harder than an office but far less stressful and more rewarding. The feeling of working together towards a useful goal overcame the discomforts of the life, and in fact the rawness was part of it.
I got drunk one night nd said to the rest of the group it was like the Spanish Civil War, which may be an exaggeration but conveys the sense of working to bring a benefit to the world.
I'm going again next year but in this dream job I'd be there for longer, sadly Edinburgh University haven't been battering diwn my door to demand that I do this!

How do you prefer watching movies - on TV, in the cinema or online? Why?

In my opinion, you can't beat going to the cinema with friends. If no one can join me on a given night I'll go alone, as going to the cinema is still better than watching at home as it's still a shared experience.
The film festival I'm going to in 2 weeks
http://www.mountainsonstage.com/programme
I'll go it alone as my girlfriend doesn't like mountains (shocking, isn't it) but I'm still part of a community of people who like mountains and some of whom have climbed mountains themselves, as I've done in a modest way, and I enjoy the exploits of people who've gone beyond that.
Also I haven't been to the city
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/liverpool
In more than 2 years and I've booked the day off work to go there and hopefully meet my friend who lives there, though he also won't be going to the event.
Of course, watching at home is ok if that's the only way to see a given film but going out is better for me.

Do you agree that you should never trust anyone who is rude to a waiter?

Yes, I do. It's funny how arseholes always say they were having a bad day and it's just their anger management issues which they can't always control, but they always make damn sure to pick on people of lower status than themselves, so it can't be that much if a regrettable spontaneous outburst.
Jeremy Clarkson, for instance, shouted abuse at and punched a producer, which he now claims to be sorry for, but if it was just a regrettable outburst why did he do it towards someone junior to him and not, say, the Director General of the BBC? Thought so.
Such people will usually get away with their foulness, but I can assure them that they're not better than us, we are better than them and we judge them.

What's the scariest movie of your childhood?

I don't know about childhood but the most horrifying movie I know, in the truest sense, is The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue.
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/non_si_deve_profanare_il_sonno_dei_morti_1974/
It's far from the goriest film ever (though there is some gore), the horror comes from the fact that (spoiler alert) there's simply no way out; different charachters do different things, but destiny overwhelms them all. That makes it much worse than a video nasty, but well recommended!

Have you ever gone mountain climbing?

Yes fam, I went up Snowdon last week!
I haven't got it posted on my website yet but this is a bookmark for when I do.

From 1-10, how good are you at swimming?

I'd say 4, it obviously depends on what situation I'm in. Bathing/swimming in a river, lake or the sea is good but I couldn't do a long distance.
In the Highlands of Scotland we had to bathe in the stream as there was no running water or central heating and it was that or live in your own dirt for a week! (Though this also showed my limitations as I had to get out after dipping my head in the cold water, and couldn't stay swimming after a storm had made the river flow furiously)
Here I am swimming in a lake in France in 2014, in somewhat milder weather!
From 110 how good are you at swimming

Who is your favorite fantasy villain?

Obadiah Hakeswill, a creation of Bernard Cornwell (second to none) and expertly played on tv by Pete Postlethwaite.
The sheer remorselessness of the man, totally without redeeming features, going out of his way to be evil, is something I can't forget. Other villains strike me as unimpressive, which I suppose would be a problem if it were real as evil would become normalised.

At my school there was a competition to cook the best meal and the prize was £1000, I made a Coq Au Van and spent the best part of £100 on the ingredients and they disqualified me but I used wine but how can you make Coq Au Van without red wine? I was furious. Can you see why?

Yes, I agree that coq au vin requires wine and it's silly to think otherwise. What did they think would happen, that everyone would get drunk on the wine?
If you made the best meal it should have won, I'm sorry some pettifogging rule (there will be plenty of those to look forward to at work!) prevented it.

Here in the U.K. we have a frozen food supermarket called Iceland. Our government has just banned its Xmas 2018 advert from TV for being “too political”. I usually avoid adverts, but this is different. What do you think of it? https://youtu.be/JdpspllWI2o

It's a sad world where that is controversial and outrageous but flogging tat in a way that everyone hates but pretends to enjoy is a normal, accepted fact of life that shouldn't be questioned because no, that's "inappropriate".

Myself I will buy relatively simple presents (not specifically marketed ones, but based on things my friends and family are interested in) and I'll be going to church, listening to some carols and not tacky hits of the kind no one likes but some feel under some kind of obligation to listen to.
I do hope that advert goes viral and its message is seriously listened to.

Who do you think will win the 2018 midterm elections? (Question asked 6 November 2018.)

oneparty4all’s Profile PhotoClaire Khaw
I don't know, I am a staunch Democrat myself but I couldn't guess who will win.
Hopefully a Democrat victory will cause Trump to suddenly change course (he doesn't really believe in anything other than himself, so if the people around him are liberal he'll go liberal without a hint of embarrassment) and things will thus change for the better, much to the embarrassment of the conservatives who now deify Trump.
