In your opinion is it more of a positive or negative thing for a vegetarian parent to raise their child vegetarian also? Why?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
They should do as my uncle did, raise them vegetarian and only have vegetarian food in the house (ad get a request for school) but accept that they may eat meat when they grow up. Of my two cousins one is a carnivore and one a vegetarian, and that has worked out ok it seems.

Write a book/movie.... Choose a time, a place, a genre, a main character. What is it about and who is the target audience?

When I was reading the book The Forgiveness of Nature by Graham Harvey, there was an unforgettable description of the summer pastures in Wales, where women would take sheep and cattle away from the settlements in which they huddled in winter, to the mountains.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhumance
(I believe there was a similar custom in Ireland, where folk would spend the summer in buildings in the hills, called booleys)
"The time of the annual migration was eagerly looked forward to, though it was a time of hard work. The Welsh language contains the verb hafota (derived from the word hafod) which means to work hard Similarly the word hendrefa (from hendref, the home farm) means to rest. The months in the shielings would be a period of long days spent milking, butter-making, moving cattle to and from their grazings and keeping the hits clean and weather proof.
But for most it was a happy time, this season passed in the fresh, mountain air far from the squalid and sometimes disease-ridden conditions of the 'township'. For all the hard work it was a sort of holiday, an escape from the routine and the humdrum, a taste of freedom and self-reliance amid scenery of immense glamour".
Imagine a novel set amidst that, it would be terrific! Perhaps in the 17th at the time of the Civil Wars. I've long thought that would be the best fiction idea, though I'm afraid I won't be writing it myself.
I also recommend this film about transhumance in America!

What in your opinion is the worst case of adaptational attractiveness? Adaptational attractiveness is when a book character is unattractive yet when they turn it into a movie, they make them very attractive. It can mess with a lot of story lines and character development.

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
No spoilers but the film of The Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene is tweaked to give it a happy ending, when the whole point of the book is that there isn't one.
Also in the film of The Power and the Glory, the whisky priest is made a much more noble charachter, when in the book he's a hero because of his weakness and cowardice not in spite of those things.
I think the problem here is partly messing around so Hollywood can have a simple hero that makes sense, andalso people who aren't Catholics or ex-Catholics and haven't got the imagination to think themselves into Graham Greene's world.
As Graham Greene was a cinemaphile he wrote books that film beautifully, so why bugger around with scripts that are already written? For the avoidance of doubt I like both films but I could love them more if the directors tried harder to understand the vision.

Who's scarier, a criminal who blends in with everyone else or a criminal who stands out? Why?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
Anyone who reads Ian Rankin (especially in Dead Souls or Even Dogs in the Wild) will know this one!
"For a while now, he'd known the truth - that it wasn't so much the underworld you had to fear as the over world. Maybe that explained why Cafferty had, to all purposes and appearances, gone legit. A few friends in the right places and deals got done, fates decided. Never in his life had Rebus felt like an insider"
The Jimmy Saville type is much worse the weirdo on the bus/train, because they have the power to perpetrate abuse and cover it up, and also put the blame on people like Robert Murat and Chris Jeffries who can be monstered and won't be able to answer back.
In Dead Souls in particuar, pillars of the establishment carry out child abuse then encourage a hate campaign against a small-timer. It suits them just fine when a mob attacks them as they can go on quietly carrying out their abuse.
And this is borne out in reality by people like Jimmy Saville, Cyril Smith & Jonathan King, so that's certainly my answer.
"the less he felt he belonged, the more he came to mistrust the others around him, with their games of golf and their 'quiet words', their stitch-ups and handshakes, palm-greasing and scratching of backs."

When was the last time you were emotionally touched by a book/movie/tv show? What's it's name and what made you feel moved?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
The poetry book the Complete Works of AE Housman moved me deeply, as it expresses my own status of a cool and even standoffish front, with a burning heart inside.
I just thought this is me, for instance.
https://www.bartleby.com/123/40.html
And when I'm struggling with work, family, neighbours etc I fall into.
https://kalliope.org/en/text/housman2002020312
I'd recommend the full book as it's quite short and is wonderful. Housman wasn't especially nice to those he met and seemed cold, and probably wouldn't have cared much about my situation, but he has been a genunine help to me where others fail.
"So Alfred has a heart after all" remarked his aunt after reading his book, and indeed he did, and expressed what is in mine.

What's your opinion on the following statement "militant antifascists are equal to militant fascists, just as bad as one another"?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
I don't think the two are evenly balanced in the west as the alt-right/fascists have the tacit support of the US president. I don't think he's a fascist himself, but he'd say or do anything to keep the reins of power so he'll make use of those birdbrains and makr concessions to them if it furthers his own ends.
(They don't know or seem to care that their own lives are made worse by this; they hate the people who are anti-Trump rather than coming up with a specific reason to be pro-Trump).
Ido give some credence to the horseshoe theory though.
https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Horseshoe_theory
You see this most clearly in Britain, where the ultra-left (George Galloway, anyone?) join forces with the ultra-right to support Brexshit, because their fantasy of a socialist utopia is more important than the wellbeing of real people in the real world.
As a Remain voter I supported the deal Theresa May brought back two weeks ago as it's the least bad option for minimising the damage done by wankers. But Jeremy Corbyn first talks about the evils of no deal (which I agree with), then refuses to help bring about a deal, because the Bennites and bellends are pressing him on it.
So I think the ultra-right are more a threat than the ultra-left but I would never deny that the ultra-ledt are a threat.

In France, it's legal for 16year olds to drink beer and wine. Whereas spirits and liquor are only legal when 18 and above. What's your opinion on the legal age for alcohol consumption being split like this?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
I think it's a terrific idea if that's what it is.
I'm not sure where the law lies in France as it seems to be stricter than it was, but easing people into moderate drinking makes more sense than British (Protestant-derived) mix of repression and libertinism, with no happy medium.

I'm currently watching Blue Is The Warmest Colour. What is the warmest colour to you? One that makes you feel cozy, comforted, warm.

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
Funny story about that film, I wanted to see it at the cinema but none of my mates would come and I didn't want to go alone as I'd look like an old perv who wants to watch a film about lesbians. Which I suppose I am, but I don't want everyone knowing that! So I've never seen it; would you recommend?
I agree, blue is my favourite colour and a peaceful sky blue is the most soothing. It is thus the colour of my walls, quilt & slanket.

When you were five years old, what did you want to be when you grew up to be the age you are now? Are you what you wanted to be or did your plans change?

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
I wanted to simultaneously be a quiz show host and deep sea diver, I'm not sure when I realised this wasn't going to happen but it wasn't a very good plan in retrospect!

How much screen time is too much?

It depends; arguably I have too much, but if I didn't have to spend 35 hours a week doing it for work I certainly wouldn't.
I do think many children have far too much; I was horrified by my cousins (who are 7 and 5) browsing videos throughout their time 'with' us, even during a family meal. And another cousin plays his xbox throughout the night and falls asleep in school, which is horrifying, especially since my uncle claims he can't prevent it. Is it so hard to prevent a 10 year old doing sonething, for their own good?
In my opinion it should be limited to an hour a day for children and they should be studying, reading books and playing outside or being taken to places by their parents the rest of the time. I appreciate some use of computers is necessary for study but not so much. And for under 16s they shouldn't be allowed to have devices in their own room as what is really the need for that?
Also no one should sleep next to their devices (I'm horrified that some do; turning a phone on is the worst imaginable thing when unable to sleep) and everyone should go quiet for at the very least 8 hours a night.
I'm not against technology but it should be the servant, not the master.

When was the last time someone tried to explain something to to you, but no matter how they tried, you remained baffled? What were they trying to explain?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
When last week a Brexshitter, who is fairly intelligent but very lazy, "explained" at great length how amazing it will all be and why Boris Johnson is the best leader of tomorrow.
I was impressed by her gift for rhetoric, extemporary speaking, and the sheer nerve to put forward a view that is complete shit. But I think overconfident people with nothing in particular to back it up are the problem.

are you strong person mentally?

I'm not sure fam, I've never been the assertive, alpha type but on the other hand I can do something I set my mind to. Yesterday I got lost on my walk and had to go at a forced pace and strain myself to get to the destination before dark, then catch the bus. There was no one else out there (it was a very remote part of Wales) so I just went for it.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Montgomeryshire_County_War_Memorial
So I don't know, I wouldn't strike anyone as a tough guy but I have determination and I can back it up if need be.
are you strong person mentally

When was the last time you wrote a letter?

I don't write letters fam, & never have.
I'd like to be some kind of Edwardian bachelor man of letters, corresponding with GK Chesterton, Arnold Bennett, Bernard Shaw, and anyone else who wrote to me in my study, but that's far from my actual life.
If you liek letters I do recommend this book!

Are there any images or quotes you have found you couldn't find the words to say yourself that says it all?

When someone you like buggers things up, or when someone stubbornly and persistently acts against their own interests (Ben Isaacs, for instance), or recently I could apply this to myself and my own mishaps.

Which do you go for in food, taste or texture and why? Bad texture freaks me out but I usually like the taste of everything. (I will be following up some of your answers with more questions too)

I like lots of things mate, today I breakfasted on porridge, a banana & an orange, didn't have any dinner as I wasn't hungry and tea was as follows:
Veggie burger on toasted rye bread with butter & mint sauce.
Toasted rye bread, peanut butter & jam
Yoghurty peanuts & raisins
Some small bars of vegan chocolate from the health shop
It would take too long to list all my likes and dislikes (though I will single out that horrible processed "tomato" sauce in tinned beans & spaghetti as something I especially loathe) so I've just given a list of foods for the day instead :)

What with the current state of the environment, growing numbers of the population becoming vegan lately and so many typically omnivorous brands releasing vegan alternatives do you think veganism is fhe future? Why/why not? (I will be following up some of your answers with more questions too)

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
I don't believe so; I myself eat meat and dairy and, while I'm interested in veganism (my uncle has been vegetarian since 1977 and is on the brink of going vegan, so I know one can eat well that way, and I've had a vegetarian day today) I don't think it will catch on globally.
Although there are millions of religious vegetarians in India and ethical vegetarians in the West and elsewhere, I believe over time there will be more meat not less as more and more people in Africa and other places will have more children and will begin to adopt a consumer lifestyle.
Perhaps understandably, they want to eat meat after having not been able to afford it for most of their lives.
As the developing world becomes better off they will eat more meat; they may eventually take up veganism as is happening in the west but there will be much more livestock farming and I imagine the trend will rise over the decades to come.

Do you believe in extra terrestrials? Why/why not? (I will be following up some of your answers with more questions too)

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
I think it is a possibility that forms of life exist on other planets, but I don't know?
CS Lewis had this to say; even if (like me) you're not a religious believer, you can easily see what he meant in the context of the way people carry on and the diseases physical and spiritual they might carry to extraterrestrial life forms.
"I look forward with horror to contact with the other inhabited planets, if there are such. We would only transport to them all of our sin and our acquisitiveness, and establish a new colonialism. I can’t hear to think of it. But if we on earth were to get right with God, of course, all would be changed. Once we find ourselves spiritually awakened, we can go to outer space and take the good things with us. That is quite a different matter."

What's your personal opinion of the Trump wall? Do you want it to be built? Why/why not? (I will be following up some of your answers with more questions too)

urlsareshittbh’s Profile Photourlsareshittbh
I don't want it and I think it's an absurd piece of theatre; conservatives loved saying Obama was style over substance, but then fell for someone who actually is that.
If he doesn't want immigrants, why not stop buggering up everyone else's country, such as by his cheerleading for Saudi atrocities in the Yemen?

Which animal is your spirit animal?

Interesting question. Once I went to Snowdon
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/180044009269/oer-ywr-eira-ar-eryrioryw-ar-awyr-i-rewi-oer
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/180042999164/copar-wyddfa-yr-ydych-chwi-yma-yn-nes-at-y
And saw an eagle flying free so I took a picture of it.
That bird, I said to myself, is my spirit animal :)
Little did I know there was a pigeon on the floor, so now I'm cursed because a pigeon is my spirit animal!
