Do you write with your right or your left hand? In the shower, do you wash your right or left arm first? Which shoe do you put on first? Are you more comfortable laying on your left or right side? If your nose itches, which hand are you more likely to scratch with?

Completely righty for all those things, I'm quite boringly conventional in that sense :)
Except sleeping, I think I do that on the back!

What are you doing for Remembrance Day?

In an hour I'm going to the service at the cenotaph and Stoke Minster, our civic church and a building that last saw my face last August at a commemoration of the outbreak of war in August 1914. It's raining but I don't suppose that's half as bad as being some poor sod shivering in a trench or a wife wondering whether her husband will be on the list of dead.

How do you like your eggs?

When they're mixed with other ingredients in a cake, like this one I made last weekend, an apple cake.

Will you continue taking landscape photographs in the winter?

Yes, when I'm not working and it's not raining I'm pretty much always in business :)
Winter trees aren't as good as autumn trees but the contrast is good, and because I've recovered from my hypothyroidism I'll be more able to appreciate the sunrises and sunsets like this one, last December.

Who is a non-politician you wish would run for office?

In the real world, I don't think someone who has never been a politician would be any good at high office. Donald Trump, for instance, makes a virtue of his ignorance and lack of interest in details, but ruling is a hard and unglamorous task that it's easy to do badly, and I don't think the world needs another Silvio Berlusconi, thanks.
I understand the argument that we need people with hinterlands outside politics, though I think professional politicians are slightly unfairly traduced. We need in particular more working-class people, I'm critical of attempts to get diversity of race and gender if they don't mention class, a load of upper-middle-class technocrats won't bring "balance". So we need a more intelligent effort to get a range of views and backgrounds, and while we need a varied range of people, it's ESSENTIAL that anyone who wants high office should have a humbler political job first. If you're a 40 year olf businessman, you should be prepared to take a pay cut and be a "humble" MP for a few years before being a minister, etc.
But that's to talk about the real world, which is shit and boring and has no place on the internet. Therefore I propose we install Rob Halford and he'll implement a policy of freewheel burning :)

What would you do if an elephant were charging at you?

Pick it up by its tusks and hurl it backwards whilst howling with rage, then it will fall onto the Danes and my other foes :)

How adept are you at recognizing your anons?

I have one regular anon but I know who she is!
If you are who I think you are, I like you and I'm sorry I don't always respond but sometimes I can't think of anything, I prefer asking questions to answering them because it's hard to come up with something to say some of the time (QED).
Anons are aye welcome to ask questions, in the unlikely event of them wanting to :)

Happy Halloween! What are you dressing up as? PAP!

Sorry to spoil the party but I won't be doing Halloween, it's another Uhmerkan import we don't need and really an excuse to get people to buy tat, like Black Wednesday and whatever the rest of them are called. Pumpkins should be the basis of a spicy soup, not a decoration. So I'll be watching a film with some people who feel the same way. But maybe I only say this because I'm jealous... being as no costume of mine could ever hope to compete with the real-life evil and malevolence of the most sinister man ever to walk the night...

What's your favorite kind of candy?

In the face of EXTREMELY stiff competition, the macaron, which I ate during a visit to the Dordogne in 2009 (my friends live there!) and have never looked back. They narrowly defeated baklava, as eaten throughout the former Ottoman Empire, the Asian sweets (no low-fat or low-sugar diet here!) sticky toffee pudding, Green and Blacks, a particular date and walnut slice, certain brand of gingerbread biscuits that some people in a local village bake, some oat biscuits made by their rivals, etc etc. But really,

Which country do you most want to visit?

Which of your estranged children do you most want to see again?
My grandfather was Polish and I never met him because he died in 1976 but a lot of my family are hoping to get together and visit krakow and Torun (where he originally lived) next year, so that's what I have in my mind now :)

I started at the last picture you shared for a few minutes while half-expecting to find something unusual hidden behind a tree or underneath a bush. Is there actually anything out of the ordinary in that picture? :O

No, it's a super autumn picture without anything unusual about it, taken here:

The question of the day was the craziest thing I've ever done, but nothing I do is of any interest, so I posted a picture instead.
Sorry if that confused you :)

How violent were The Last Kingdom books? Do you remember them describing anyone being raped, tortured, murdered, etc. in graphic detail?

Yes, uhtred of Bebbanburg wreaks a pretty hideous vengeance himself amidst general rape and killing, in the first TV show one of his lord's enemies is blinded and retaliates by burning the man's hall with his followers inside. As you'd expect. But, and this goes for all of Bernard Cornwell's male warriors, he doesn't share many of the attitudes of the time. He never rapes anyone, which is seen as a radical attitude for his time, and admires strong women, many of whom feature prominently.
He is hardly a liberal-minded, tolerant modern but he definitely keeps to his own sense of justice and while atrocities inevitably happen he isn't the perp and I think we can be ok supporting his efforts. Uhtred is also very intelligent and it's fascinating to read about his thoughts and his mental struggles. For instance he is a Saxon, but is still a pagan and even though the Danes dispossessed him he still has a sneaking sympathy for them over his Christian countrymen. So he doesn't mind so much when he is captured as a boy and raised the Norse way, though he... Well, I won't spoil that, I demand that you read/watch instead. (It is on American TV too)

I've noticed that candy corn can be a deeply polarizing topic this time of year. Which side do you fall on? Do you love it or hate it? :D

I am in the happy position of having never heard of it, I'm British and maybe someone here eats it but I've never met them!
I never answer the door, I'm cruel that way, and I'm going to see a non-horror film with a like minded friend.

What I will be doing is going to the farmers' market the first Saturday in November and buying some of the pumpkins that weren't sold for Halloween, they will be at a nice discount and I'll eat them with some spelt or rye bread. I won't invite you round though, it'll have all those spices in that you hate :)

Flashback Friday! PAP from the summer?

Ooh! I'm hoping to return to this place next week, for a photoshoot of autumn. Flashback indeed...

What is the best picture you've taken so far? :)

Which of your children is your favourite? ;)
I'm waiting a few days, when the clocks go back I'll be taking sunsets. ATM there are no sunrises because it's dark throughout my morning walk, and in the evening I can't be bothered going out. But here's one I did in September that the readership liked, and I was quite pleased with.

I like to send this question out every once in a while to see how people respond to it and if their answers have changed. :) What topics are you currently most interested in being asked here? What - if anything - do you prefer not to be asked about?

No holds barred, if I can't think of an answer I don't respond and hope the asker doesn't mind. It's difficult to offend me. I do like questions about and comments on my photography.

I am interested in the whole panoply of World War 1 having been 100 years ago and thinking what my ancestors- as far as I know not my literal flesh and blood ancestors but you know what I mean- were doing then. I can't remember a lot of the history-ing I did because I was ill until March so it didn't all sink in but I did really enjoy my visit to several battlefields and cemeteries in Belgium in March. And with it being Remembrance Day in November I will be finding an excuse to give my favourite poems to people like this,

What do you like to think about when you're on a walk?

Too often, the humdrum cares of this world and work-related problems, which often get solved during my walks and cycles but that's hardly a good use of my time. And thankfully as I walk on and climb higher I start leaving that behind.
I think then about the route (I like reading maps, very stereotypically male I know) and about photoshoots, with particular reference to setting them against earlier visits in different seasons, like this;
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/131223284439/cannock-chase-and-shugborough-123579
And I listen to my audiobooks and generally my head sorts itself out and thoughts permeate to where they should be, it's like free therapy :)
Also this may be ill-advised but I rehearse conversations/arguments to think what I will say or should have said. Though it always annoys me when the other person doesn't react as I'd planned for them to do!

Why do you think some people develop celebrity crushes? Who was your first celebrity crush?

Because it's so implausible that anyone at school etc will fall in love with them, they imagine being with someone off the TV or something? Good question but I'm not sure I can answer it, I don't remember the first but now I adore Jaclyn Glenn, have you seen her videos on YouTube? :)

What's your favorite place to think? PAP.

At a certain pool that I think was once turned to some kind of industrial use, but abandoned decades ago. I never see anyone there. When I was ill with my thyroid I used to sit and rest there during my walks, Idon't need that so much now but I still love it. Here it is last December.

What is your exercise routine like?

On a work day I wake up early and walk for an hour, I don't like it but I like that stale feeling of having done no exercise even less. At weekends I get together such friends as want to come and go for longer. On gala occasions I might cycle.
The gym hasn't seen my face since March 2014, I quit because I didn't have the stomach for it. Now I know this was because I was starting to get ill with my thyroid, but even now I've recovered, why bother going back? Gyms and diets are too Protestant for me (if that makes sense) :)

What kinds of food have you been eating a lot of lately? Do you tend to eat the same kinds of stuff over and over again, or do you prefer a more varied diet?

I like a varied diet with a lot of seasonal fruit and vegetables, I'm rocking these apples in particularly (the juice goes well with autumn vegetables in a soup, sounds odd but it's true). Some of my favourite stuff is quite expensive so I save it for Saturdays, like many folks I don't enjoy going to work so that and my adventures are what I think about during the week. And in that vein I ate some French macarons (not to be confused with coconut macaroons, which I don't like).

What do you see when you wake up in the morning? PAP!

I don't see anything if any interest or anything obscene. Therefore I will post some pictures of enraged cows (thankfully they were on the other side of a wall)
