What's your opinion on German people?🤔

prosaeed359’s Profile Photopro.saeed
I wouldn’t like someone any more or less because they’re from Germany?
I was brought up with the usual anti-German prejudices that you get from most older people in Britain, but I don’t believe that. Then again. I wouldn’t like someone MORE because they’re from Germany, I’d just take them as they came.

Is there such a thing as toxic positivity?

reereelouise’s Profile PhotoRee
Yes, as Barbara Ehrenreich said in her book ‘Smile or Die’, there is.
The idea that you can get rich by ‘manifesting’ is shit, but moves away from being harmless nonsense into something worse when it leads to the idea that the sick deserve to be sick because their ‘negative’ thoughts brought it on, and that the poor deserve to be poor, as if someone born on a council state would be the same as someone who inherits millions if only they thought differently.
I take this personally because I have an illness (thyroid) that was cured by pills, not by ‘manifesting’, and because I’ve been poor, and I got out of poverty more through luck than anything I did myself, so I could still be down there.
So I am just not in the mood for pseudoscience of this kind.

What do you think about the teenager who cut down the famous sycamore tree?

Shannon678900’s Profile PhotoShannon
That someone put them up to it and it’s almost certainly someone who lives nearby, and whose mindless resentment of ‘tourists’ led them to do such a thing.
The fuckwit should be given community service, but it needs to be jail for those who put the idea in his head.

I see that you wrote a dissertation on the legacy of the English Civil War! Super cool! I am doing woefully little reading but happened to read some of "Act of Oblivion" by Robert Harris. I wondered if you might have heard of it or even perhaps read it?

I’m afraid not!
It sounds like the kind of thing I’d enjoy so I would like to read it, though it is hard to find time for reading.
Thank you for the suggestion though, and any historians among my followers may also like to hear this.

Do you think you could live without the Internet? 🛜 😇

redoasis2017’s Profile Photo★ ☮ ♫ ʎɐɯɯo⊥ snoıɔɐuǝ⊥™ ▩ ♚ ☻
No, because I need it to work, to send my meter readings in, to find &engage with tradesmen who do much-needed work in my house, and so on.
The internet isn’t just messing round on social media, though I also arrange to meet friends & family through that so it’s not to be sniffed at.
As to the interacting with others online, that I haven’t met, that is also good and not to be dismissed.

How many Ukrainian people are you know

Makasimu’s Profile PhotoСум
One that I work with who is an older lady who I really get on with, who is in fact coming to 🍺 beer festival with a group of us tonight.
Haven’t met any other Ukrainians because I hardly meet anyone other than work colleagues, but I’d be open to.
