What's your dream job?

Professional historian who does research at a university but never teaches any students and whose publications are acclaimed, I'd make the crossover into popular history but stay respected by the academics, a bit like Simon Montefiore.

Curious question: What's your first impression of me?

I vaguely have the idea of a studenty type or someone who works in a bookshop or library something, and wears long skirts and dresses, possibly a quiet person in real life but who has a lot of interesting stuff to say to people she knows well. I've said that off the top of my head, so you're welcome to explain how true or false that impression is :)
I suppose you could be a hedge fund manager or something but I think that is a bit unlikely.

Swimming pool, river, lake, sea, ocean - where do you prefer to swim?

I love swimming outdoors, I like the sea and I can do pools sometimes but I prefer a good lake. Here I am swimming in a river in France in 2014, I haven't got pictures of the lake but it's even better.

What’s the nicest thing a complete stranger has done for you or vice versa?

Several times I've been given lifts, including by off-duty bus drivers; I never hitch hike but I sometimes accept a lift if I'm on an especially long walk that's going badly.
I know that such people would never take money so despite being agnostic I light a candle for such people because, while I can't do much practical stuff, I hope someone helps them the way they helped me.

Just think how much worse off we would be if that trust were eroded, both knowing we won't be attacked and robbed, and thus giving and accepting the support.
When I was in the Highlands of Scotland we always took in passers by to our bothy, I was very struck by the parable of the sheep and the goats which I learnt when I was a child, that not only does God want us to be kind to the stranger but that God is, in fact, the stranger and our treatment of this helpless person who needs shelter leads to the verdict on how we've lived and whether we are worthy. And I myself found an open bothy at Camban (it was empty, but open to wayfarers) and rested in it.
Of course, I live in a rather worse area than Athnamulloch and I regret that, but I hope we can all learn a lesson from such hospitality.

If you could travel anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

NickiJA’s Profile PhotoNicki
I like lots of places but tomorrow I want to be in my Shropshire.
Since I was a child I've loved it here and of course discovering AE Housman and naturally feeling in tune with him has kept me coming back again and again, though never quite enough times to satisfy me.

After the most recent one in that series I went to a stately home called Powis Castle but didn't get enough pictures for a photoshoot, so I'm keen to finish my work.
But sadly will spend most of my time in the office earning money being bored :(

Random thoughts.. ?

I've just discovered a fascinating fact!
The place I went to at the weekend

Apparently in the old days it was a bare heath of the kind you get in very high places, and the forest everyone today is used to (which I vaguely thought had always been there, and which inspired Alan Garner) was only planted in the 18th century because the family who owned the land thought it should be wooded!
If there are any places that are truly untouched by human hands, in this age of climate change, Alderley Edge certainly isn't one of them.
It's a man made landscape but still wild in a very real sense as it can be altered by in unpredictable ways, and certainly never controlled.
Welcome to my site and I hope you enjoy these thoughts and have a look at your places to see if you can discover any such random facts about them.

When's the last time you felt relief?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
When I narrowly avoided missing the train last week!
There's an old Arab saying that the best way to make a poor man happy is to take away his camel, then give it back the next day. And I know from my own life that this is a profound piece of wisdom.
Because I still had to be overworked and underpaid, but since I wasn't late, it seemed like a good day!

please recommend good advices and good applications/ websites to improve English language. Especially speaking skills. thanks

I don't know any, I'm afraid.
Have you tried watching a film in English & having subtitiles in your native language?

Opinion on @origamibirds

I think she's a good contributor & a funny, interesting person that it would be fun to walk/cycle with & then go out drinking, if she lived nearby.
Might I ask who's asking this question? As I don't mind it & hopefully tea doesn't either but it's a bit random from an anon?

When was the last time you felt proud of yourself?

Today I had half a day off and went off retracing my steps of a journey I went on last year!

I'm proud that I stirred myself to make the effort and have got the rewards of that, which I'll blog about when I'm less tired.
I do believe we need to put in an effort before we can be satisfied, the problem is this work that we need for our fulfilment is not the same as paid employment, which I don't enjoy at all.
But I do take pride in my true work which I'll be posting about hopefully tomorrow.

How do you feel about people “liking” their own answers? I admit to doing it on occasion myself to “bump” an answer that I think might not have been seen. Is this acceptable do you think, or is it an Ask taboo?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I do that! Much for the same reason, when I feel an answer hasn't got the recognition it deserves.
It probably isn't quite comme il faut but I have to pick up the slack others leave when they fail to like my answers! :)
