What is the scariest movie you’ve ever seen?

The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue, because whatever any character does or tries to do there's simply no way out of the fate that awaits them all, good or bad.
So it's worse than a film with any kind of moral in terms of scariness as, unlike films in which the hero dies, they don't die in any redemptive way, they just suffer the fate they suffer for the sheer hell of it.

How do you discover new music to listen?

What I do is when I'm listening to a band, I read their Wikipedia entry and see who they were inspired by and go back to the source.
If I hear a cover version I listen to the original, I also speak to friends and use those algorithms of if you like x you'll like y; I used to be on last.fm and though I no longer do this, I think it can be useful.
(For example if you like Black Sabbath the odds are you'll like Judas Priest, and fans of Iron Maiden will generally like Saxon, etc).
Then when I get the ideas I listen to them on spotify and buy them if I like them a lot, keep spotifying them if I like them a bit, and avoid them if not (This rarely happens as I have such an efficient system in place so I'll almost always get good stuff).
Since you ask, have a recommendation (featuring Adrian Smith out of Iron Maiden).

What's the most annoying question people ask you on ASKfm?

Ben's questions are annoying, not just for their subject matter, but much worse because of how little thought and concern have gone into them.
He just shouts the same abuse at everyone regardless of who they are, so he can't possibly be reading my answers, so why bother asking the question at all? That is offensive as I obviously think my answers are good (though admittedly not perfect) and I'd like people to read them and ask more good questions.
For instance, today he called me a woman, as he obviously has me on his list and I thus got the generalised hate he sends to everyone, though obviously a question aimed at women is not for me.
Will everyone PLEASE read my posts first and think of a suitable question, and once you've done that you're very welcome to ask.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives? ?

Outdoor swimming, and not in a pool!
Be it in the sea, or even better in a river or lake, I urge every able-bodied person who can get to water to try it. Can't swim? I advise you to learn at a pool and then go outside as it's amazing :)
Here I am swimming at Bourdeilles, France, in 2014. I don't go very often but when I go on a long-distance walk at the end of May,

I was just reading an article in an old "Tablet" about Cardinal Henry Newman and how he thought church architecture should really be full of religious references. Have you come across this in any of your reading?

StephenInd’s Profile PhotoStephen Ind
This is interesting as the mid 19th century Gothic Revival style, which began in high churches, spread well beyond explicitly religious buildings and incorporates libraries, railway stations, and the British Houses of Parliament.
http://www.victorianweb.org/art/architecture/pugin/fisher.html
What I noticed when I went to a church on Friday, which like many Gothic Revival buildings is set here (a hotbed of such styles as a very grand Catholic recusant, the earl of Shrewsbury, lived here).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Saints'_Church,_Leek
In what is nominally an Anglican building, it's totally dominated by the altar in a way that would make even many Catholics blush!
Thus, the Gothic Revival is a two-pronged attack, in the world a return of traditionalism and a reaction to the secular rationalism of the eighteenth century, and in the church both a return to pre-Reformation traditions and a Victorian innovation.
So I agree with Newman that you can't avoid making a statement, as trying to make pure apolitical and religiously neutral art is a statement in itself.

I was just reading an article in an old Tablet about Cardinal Henry Newman and

If you could be in a TV show, which one would it be?

I'd be one of the historical experts consulted on a documentary about the 18th century.
It has a good ring to it, Herbert Henry Asquith, Imperial College London, winner of the Galactic Institute's Prize for Extreme Cleverness.
And I'd wear a white suit on tv and at all the lunches and dinners I attended.

what's on your shopping list right now? What do you need?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
I need headphones as my old ones bust, I hadn't budgeted for that so I don't know whether to spend the money or just wait a few days without headphones as I need to buy my dinner today & that's my daily expenditure.
Normally I don't mind as I can manage on my income but I'm a bit miffed actually as I didn't mishandle my headphones, they just stopped working?

I’ve never met a good Catholic, I’m now under the impression that a good Catholic simply doesn’t exist, besides Britain is a Protestant country so Catholics shouldn’t even be here, if I was in charge I’d demolish all Catholics churches.

Which church do you attend then

I once knew this very odd skinhead guy. He once rang me at work from a local police station saying he’d been arrested, babbling incoherently about a drugs heist, and referring to me loudly as his “lawyer”. Have there been any “characters” that have attempted to rope you in to their weird life?

I once vaguely knew someone and made the mistake of giving him my number, as it turned out he was a frequent unfunny prank caller.
Once I answered the phone and someone said "Hello, Herbert" in a voice very much like his. Now I wasn't in the mood for pranks that day.
"What the fuck do you want?" I snapped.
As it turned out it was someone from the agency offering an extension of the contract I was on, which saved me from unemployment. He just happened to have a similar voice to the prank caller!
By some miracle I managed to explain the situation to the recruiter, he didn't mind and I got the work!
But from then on I blocked all this pranker's new numbers (he had many) immediately, and I haven't heard from him in year's.

I'm sorry I have not read any of his work...

I recommend Riotous Assembly and Indecent Exposure as they are not only hilarious, but give an insight into what South Africa was like under apartheid (Tom Sharpe was deported from South Africa for being against the system).
Welcome to my site btw, you're welcome to ask questions if you have any :)

What current trend is going to look silly in 10 years?

Hopefully, that horrible Americanism of starting every other sentence with so will crash and burn soon, as I'm tired of hearing it!

How do you usually discover new music?

What I do fam, is I read the Wikipedia entries of bands I like and delve into their inspirations, it's very easily done with spotify.
If I hear a cover version I'll listen to the original and I've got into a lot of excellent music that way.

I suppose I have more curiosity than many people but it's something anyone can do quite easily.

What gives you happiness in life??

Completing a successful trip such as a walk & then making a good blog about it.

I was out there in preparation for a long-distance walk I'm doing,
http://www.alstonefield.org/tourist-info/leaden-boot/
And it gives a feeling of reward and satisfaction that lounging round certainly doesn't.
I do believe we need to work, in the sense of making an effort and sacrifice towards a goal, to be fulfilled. The problem is that this is too often confused with earning money, so a lot of people aren't fulfilled by their work and a lot of wealthy people aren't fulfilled because they don't do anything, so both the rich and the poor are in danger of not being fulfilled.
This is true of my day job but thankfully I have my real work as outlined to bring satisfaction.
100!

What is the last thing you said to your ex?

I haven't got any exes as I've been in an on-off relationship since November 2012 and before that I was single :)
We are not the sort of people who marry, have children etc but as she doesn't read this site I can post what I'm too embarrassed to say to her face, that she is the only one & I love her!
As she lives in another city and we haven't seen each other in 3 weeks I am in a state of

Do you admire someone?

Yes, I terrifically admire Sir Dave Attenborough!
His programming has not only brought us the joys of the natural world but also raised awareness of issues such as plastic pollution, and politicians will hopefully act on this; they may bot do enough but they'll certainly do more thanks to his campaigning.
Dave Attenborough also appeared on TV with Liz Windsor and it was the first time I'd ever heard of this fascinating project of forests across the world.
https://queenscommonwealthcanopy.org/
(This is why I do value the work of Liz Windsor; I think she has used her worldwide connections to the full and only someone like her could do what a professional politician couldn't, a fact that is valued by many people across the world, though less so at home).
Did you watch Dave's interview with Barry Obama?

Again, Barry didn't fully deliver but at least it's now on the agenda whereas it wasn't prior to Dave's work.

If you stop what your doing for 20/30 seconds and just listen... what sounds do you hear right now?

As I'm on break & walking in a nature trail near where I work I'd like to say birdsong, but in fact I can hear revving cars & horns :(
I will hopefully hear some birds in the garden this evening tho

Are you the type of person who would spend time in the company of a stranger with pleasure, drinking cappuccinos and telling each other stories from life? :) ☕☕

Yes, if they were someone I had something in common with & were an interesting, intelligent person?
