Do you think it is acceptable that there should not be any relationship between a man and a woman unless they got married?

No, I think it's perfectly valid that people- including same-sex couples- have relations out of marriage. Of course some people end up regretting being promiscuous but then a lot more people in the old days or in more conservative parts of the world regret loveless too-early marriages or enforced celibacy.
I don't think it's a good idea for people to just go round having children outside stable relationships, for a "father" to desert the family, etc. But to live in Queen Victoria's age or sharia law is just as bad, it's not as if life was a barrel of laughs for Arnold Bennett's characters in the "good" old days.

Whose brain would you want to live in for a day?

Perhaps Edward Rutherfurd, I love him. He writes these amazing books, long but not a sentence wasted, tracing the history of a place (eg. London and New York are among his achievements) through the lives of interacting families down the centuries.
When the terrorist attacks struck Paris, I immediately thought of his novel on the subject. How Tomas Gascon had cut the cables of the Eiffel Tower to prevent Hitler climbing it (this happened in real life, but no one knows who did it) and why he had to do it to prevent the insult to Monsieur Eiffel, whom he'd worked alongside on the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower decades earlier. The hatred of the de Cygne and Le Soard families, who'd fought each other down the centuries, until they reconcile when it's already too late for them.
And the antisemitic attacks and the attack on the kosher supermarket and other "targets" out by Muslim zealots would have come as no surprise to Jacob ben Jacob, who along with other charachters faced the same treatment in the 13th century at the hands of Christian zealots in church and state.
It's like for every occasion Edward Rutherfurd has a charachter and an event, I'd love to know how he comes up with it all :)

Do you agree with the quote "He who gives up freedom for safety deserves neither"? Why?

It depends what's meant by freedom, doesn't it? If it means what "libertarians" support, most people don't want it and aren't to be despised for that. Because a single, wealthy man may want to "live free or die" (by the right-wing definition) but what about poor people, women and children?
Then, most recently with the illegal war in Iraq, "liberation" is anything but. Since 1914, states that have been "liberated" have simply had a change from distant rulers to local, often much worse, bosses.
On a practical point though I very much agree that government security" agencies have been grabbing power in the name of keeping us safe, but really to protect themselves. So it is a bit difficult :)

I have fallen right into the adult coloring book fad and have no regrets. Are there any fads that you've especially enjoyed over the years?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
I like colouring books actually, so long as they're spelled correctly ;) A pal of mine works with people who are recovering head injuries and colouring is one of the activities they do, and she's persuaded me to try my own hand at it. It's something outside what I normally do and good for thaat reason.
I can't say I've really taken up any fads except I have a YOLO t shirt :) And I took part in making my own Bad Blood poster.

If you had the choice, which character from Middle-Earth would you want to be?

Over time I've graduated from being all gung-ho like one of the dwarves to being a bit of a hobbit. I now agree with Thorin on the question when he praises Bilbo.
"There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
And I think a lot of people in a lot of places in 2016 should consider that,

Are you seeking something you can never attain? If so, what makes you proceed with your quest?

As a photographer, I consider myself only as good as my last shoot, and never as good as I "should" be. But I carry on because it's in me, like any creative person.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/photos
In a book called The Giaconda Smile, a there's a charachter that I don't actually like at all but he says one wise remark.
" I'm only speaking a melancholy truth. Reality doesn't always come up to the ideal, you know. But that doesn't make me believe any the less in the ideal."
He is talking about something else, but that's how I regard my work.

What's new with you? :)

Not a lot :)
Since returning from Singapore and Malaysia on Christmas Eve, roughly nothing has happened in my life. Except we've seen massive storms (worse in other towns than here, no one I personally know is flooded) and I've naturally seized the photo opportunity.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/136623908939/at-doxey-marshes-another-site-managed-by
And I'm actually really angry about it, because David Shameron has entirely failed to learn the lessons of the previous floods in 2014. Read these articles by the same author, you'd never have guessed two yeas seperated them and a precise total of nothing has changed.
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/feb/17/farmers-uk-flood-maize-soil-protection
http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/dec/29/deluge-farmers-flood-grouse-moor-drain-land
Unemployed people get vilified and begrudged the pittance they exist on, but if you're an agriculture baron or an "investor" from Saudi Arabia, China or some other shonky regime thy can'tt do enough for you, at my expense in both senses of the word.
So even though it's a good photography time I'm a bit miffed really!

What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?

I'd walk my cat whilst wearing an open shirt and drinking Martini like this guy, legend and warrior.

What do you think is the most effective way to move on after the death of a close relative and why?

I don't know really, you certainly need a good funeral. The most recent relative to die was my great-aunt, we had a big old-school Catholic funeral and everyone prayed for the soul. Now I'm an agnostic but I see the virtue of that (it wouldn't happen at a Prod funeral because they don't believe in it, but think of the comfort it gives to the living).
I also like the Irish wake, where people eat and drink their fill and toast the dead person and talk about their virtues and how good a time they had with them. So that's a secular equivalent.
Once a friend of mine died and his motorbike friends road out alongside the funeral car in tribute to him, it was so impressive and moving. Andy used to go on a walk with us, he was one of our group, so every year on the 25th of September we go on a route he enjoyed, his wife and friends go round. And obviously we're having a good time because we love going to that place. So something like that happened.
As I say I can't advise you or anyone else that is in mourning, but I recommend getting the deceased friends and family together to talk about them and do things you enjoyed doing with them, unless there's an extremely fragile person who would be triggered by that it's a good way of working out grief.

Do you agree that a person who doesn't understand the essence of death can't desire to die? Why?

To live is to die, but I didn't acknowledge this until I had an episode of hypothyroidism, even though I've recovered I feel ten or twenty years older than I was in 2011 and I've had all kinds of mental shift due to being aware that one day I'll be dead, though I enjoy (most of) life more than I did before my illness.
So if you mean by not understanding death, not being aware of one's own mortality, then I suppose such a person can barely get their head round it. Whether they might desire to die I don't know, they might want an end to their present situation but the alternative to life is either the afterlife or oblivion, depending on whether there's an afterlife or not.
Have you seen the film The White Ribbon? In it, a 4 year old boy sees a dead woman and he doesn't know why she is that way, since he isn't aware of what death is, and he has to have the whole thing explained to him by his sister. Then she has to admit that their mother hasn't actually "gone on a trip" but is, in fact, dead.
Sorry I can't give much of an answer, but it's not a topic that's ever occured to me really. But really any excuse to post a song.

What is one thing you enjoy that most people seem to really dislike?

I like to get bladdered on this, a taste that's shared by fully zero people, ever.

What is one thing you really dislike that most people seem to enjoy?

Golf, wtf is that all about? Not just that I don't like it, in the sense I might not like a food others like and leave it there, I'm actually quite anti-golf in my views.
Because it's just a waste of land and water, I've heard about golf courses in gulf states where water is diverted from uses it's needed for into something pointless. And when we need water more than ever for drinking and agriculture, and we need agricultural land, woods, etc, why have a golf course? So I'm not some killjoy, just someone who doesn't see why middle-class hobbyists get priority over useful stuff!

Next September, for three minutes, I will be Queen Allison the Bedwetter of Sensible Castle in Cork, Ireland somewhere or another. It was part of a gift from CAH. I am allowed 3 decrees- what do you think my decrees should be?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
Abolition of football.
Abolition of golf.
Repeal of the licensing laws for alcohol :)

What fashion trend from the last few years do you think will resurface in 20 years when a "retro" version of this decade is popular?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
Good question but you'r knocking on the wrong door, seriously, I don't even know what's trendy and what isn't never mind have a view on it.
But I noticed in 2012, when a British athlete won the Tour de France, there was talk of a revival of cycling. And another Britidh asthlete won in 2013 and 2015, and I'm sceptical if it will happen but if a young generation get inspired by Wiggo and Froomie to cycle then I'd face more humiliation from people overtaking me on my bike but that would be a good trend to have.

What is the meaning of your name?

(My username isn't my real name, the historic Herbert Henry Asquith was prime minister in the 20th century).
"English form of the Greek name Ανδρεας (Andreas), which was derived from ανδρειος (andreios) "manly, masculine", a derivative of ανηρ (aner) "man". In the New Testament the apostle Andrew, the first disciple to join Jesus, is the brother of Simon Peter. According to tradition, he later preached in the Black Sea region, with some legends saying he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. Andrew, being a Greek name, was probably only a nickname or a translation of his real Hebrew name, which is not known."
Which is funny because I'm not macho in the least, but there you go.

Are you camera shy or do you like having your photo taken?

I don't really like having my picture taken because I think I often look fat, and in fact I put a bit of weight on in Singapore/Malaysia, which tragically I've had to come back from. But my girlfriend likes me (sometimes) and I do quite like having pictures like this, in Malaysia. We were probably the only white people the locals had seen in months, but we were on a food tour and our guide is related to several people there and I know my way around laksa, nasi lemak, and the amazing Indian sweets we finished with (virtually everyone considers them too sugary and fatty, including many born and bred Indians, but not me).

I spent a big portion of today trying to get the Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" out of my head. What songs have been stuck in your head recently? How do you dislodge unwanted songs from your mind?

By listening to other songs, generally. I'm having my own carol concert. :)
Being the man I am, I'm going to listen to Simple Gifts, which I'd never heard. But it can't be better than this, another song I don't remember hearing as a child but which I love and I love jaclyn in general. BTW I sobered up since last time and I'm coming back from Singapore and Malaysia, so I'll be listening to a carol concert on the flight :)

Do you drink alcohol?

Yes, I drink. i am in fact drunk in Malaysia now. If in my childhood church in Goldenhill, best place in the world, they had suggested that we shouldn't drink, the whole congregation would have died laughing,
I am in Malaysia, sorry if this isn't a good answer but I have in fact been drinking tonight :)

If you could time travel, would you go to the future or the past?

I'd go to the 18th century and be a good, old-school Whig aristocrat. I'd be enormously wealthy and I'd be obese from all that roast beef, plum pudding and best brandy. I'd just sit in my stately home getting blind drunk every night, cheering on our victories over those dastardly rebels, Frenchmen and spaniards :)
But then I already do time travel...

What do you think of the use of animals in the circus?

I'm against it, it's even less defensible than a zoo because they can't take in orphaned animals, have breeding programmes etc like the best zoos do, and they can't monitor the health of the animals. Plus a pal of mine is a clown and it's perfectly possible for just adult humans to put on a show, I don't enjoy it but presumably someone does.
I've seen excellent theatrical performances by youths orphaned by war and suffering all kinds of problems, when I was in Cambodia. And having been dealt a shite hand in life they are offered a chance to make something of their lives and contribute to a society that desperately needs its young people to raise the society out of poverty, land mines, etc. So we can enjoy things like that, there's no need for animal cruelty.

Which famous person do you think would make the best next door neighbor, and why?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
Bruce Dickinson, because everything about him suggests he'd be an amazing drinking buddy and general legend. He is, as well as being my favourite vocalist, a professional pilot, fencing champion and all-round legend. The entp might get a bit too strong at times but imagine getting sheened with this one, especially if he brought Arthur Brown round.

Who inspires you?

Christopher Lee (pbuh) after a career being wildly successful at everything he suddenly launched into being a heavy metal singer. No surprise, he was fantastic.

Once at work I got blamed for a mistake I actually hadn't done but at the time, like everyone, I just assumed it was my fault and meekly accepted my roasting. And while management were effing and jeffing, I was thinking about the lyrics to this, how I should be fighting the unbeatable foe and marching into hell for a heavenly cause, not working in that place (where I actually still work).
At some point during the sleepless night that ensued, it occurred to me that I might not be to blame, and I logged on to my computer and found that it happened hours after I had clocked off and couldn't have been me...in fact the author of this mistake was my supervisor who had been my biggest accuser!
After this I went on a highly successful holiday and got a real harvest of photos, I'm still not Christopher Lee or dreaming the impossible dream but it's what I look up to.
