The weirdly shaped Oamuamua object has entered our solar system. What do you think it could be? Planetary fragment, alien probe ?, or something else? pic: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/dec/11/astronomers-to-check-interstellar-body-for-signs-of-alien-technology

I don't know, but if you read this book, objects in space are discussed along with many others so I do recommend it.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2011/mar/06/edgelands-england-farley-roberts-review
And maybe the real explanation is that it's some people who took Ian Gillan's advice to go space truckin' in 1972 and are still out there having a wild adventure.

Do you have special ways to enjoy weekends?

By not working :)
I do enjoy a trip to whichever market is on that Saturday morning, the rest of the weekend may be spent going for a walk, reading The Economist & books, watching Blue Planet 2, listening to my record collection.
I've had an idea of what do at bank holiday weekend!
(For those who don't know, this is a public holiday on the last Monday in May, in Britain, one of 8 such public holidays).
I shall start in Chester and do

To what extent, if any, do you follow the personal lives of celebrities? (The idea for the question came from: https://ask.fm/Sometimes_Witty/answers/145272198828 . I want to know how common or uncommon it is for my Ask buddies to know stuff about celebrities. Haha).

I don't follow celebrities like the Kardashian family or something but I do follow "my" people and am curious/worried when they don't do anything for a time.

Ive recently found out about this Uber cab thing (yesterday) and I think it’s disgraceful, they’re taking jobs off regular taxi drivers who have had to go on a long course to learn every road, street and area in London and the black cabs trade in London is one of the oldest and it’s dying out.

Stop being conservative then

What story are you always ready to tell?

The story of how good our work in Scotland is, and how much I enjoy doing it and spending time in Edinburgh beforehand.
www.treesforlife.org.uk
The first tree planting group came in 1991 and posted the trees you can see in the picture.
Look at how life has regenerated there compared to outside the enclosure. When I got tired & the work seemed too hard, I consoled myself with the hope that we were achieving what they'd achieved & it would in 25 years look like that.

Is ghosting someone ever acceptable? If so, under what circumstances? If not, why?

AmericanLass’s Profile PhotoC.
I don't think so, it's a very impolite way of dealing with people?
Certainly not something I'd do, if I decided I didn't want to see someone I'd explain what the problem was in a way that would hopefully make them think what they'd done wrong and not repeat the mistake with someone else.
Not just blank them like they don't exist.

WHO'S NEXT, PLEASE?

What do you get complimented on the most?

How "clever" I am.
But I don't take that seriously as I compare myself to people like Simon Montefiore & William Dalrymple, so those people who compliment me may be sincere but are mistaken!

So I’ve seen a bunch of questions go around about first kisses, but how did your last kiss go down?

origamibirds’s Profile Phototea.
It was saying goodbye to my girlfriend, the last tine I saw her, on Monday.
We have this signal that when we are cuddling or just vaguely sitting round in silence, I'll touch her chin when I want to kiss her.
As I was leaving her flat, to go to that http://www.mountainsonstage.com I was talking about (her only fault is that she doesn't like things like that) I touched her cheek & kissed her for what might be the last time for a few weeks now :(

William Bradley who was 7’9” and lived from 1787 - 1820, lived in a town just up the road from me, there’s a wooden statue of him there (the small town couldn’t afford a stone one, but they raised enough cash for the wooden one, which looks very nice).

Did you know the tallest man ever was Robert Wadlow at 2.25m that's 8 feet 11 inches

I didn't know that, thanks for the information.

What do you hope Santa brings you this year? If your family, religion, and/or culture doesn't include Santa in their traditions, feel free to substitute any other mythological gift-bringer you may know of or talk about what you'd love to receive as a gift in general.

I cheated a bit & requested this from my parents which I'll hopefully receive

But the real joy lies in carefully selecting presents for others, which they'll like but haven't bought yet. And I'm stoked about our Secret Santa at work (have you heard of this custom?) because someone I like, a very intelligent girl, is someone I'm buying for.
She is exactly the sort of person who'd love Douglas Adams but when I spoke to her about a month ago she said she had never read HG2G, So she might have bought it in the meantime (I recommended it) but I've got her as a present The Long, Dark Teatine of the Soul, which I hope is a perfectly aimed present'

Is there a holiday or season that you decorate your living space for? Which one(s)?

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
My space is as staunchly resistant to decoration, gentrification & basic decency as ever :)
Apart from, you probably can't see it but there's a card I got from Derby Cathedral for my cousin and her family, and one of the books is a book GK Chesterton wrote about Christmas. That is literally the only change, apart from the usual changing round of the books as some are read, put in the cupboard & newly bought ones go on the pile.

Do you think it's possible to have feelings for two people at the same time? Have you ever been in that situation?

Syphira’s Profile PhotoSaphira
haven't myself, but if you're curious about that type of thing I recommend this book.
https://www.theguardian.com/books/2017/apr/01/hidden-nature-by-alys-fowler-review
It's set amongst the waterways of the city my girlfriend lives in, so I relate to it, but that's just the backdrop against which the story is played out.
Although she realises she is a lesbian and has fallen in love with a woman, she continues to lover her husband, because of course sex is far from everything and he is a dear friend to her, but he angrily rejects this as he wants them to exclusively love each other.
So it's a very bittersweet adventure extremely well told that I recommend.

What is the difference between being alive and truly living?

I always envied Oberyn. He lived. He truly lived. Sailed around the world. Fought men from every country. Lay with the most beautiful women alive.
And men.

I notice the anons (or perhaps it’s just one) out in force today with cruel or childish statements and attacks on people. Do you ever engage with trolls (anonymous or otherwise)? If you respond to them, what makes you do it, and has it helped?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I allow all questions in that sense, though I may not answer them.
(For two seperate reasons; because the asker is an arsehole, or because I can't think of any response; so if you're a good person, don't be offended if I don't respond)
Yes, I do try to engage with trolls, for instance to point out that Donald Trump is a serial liar and bullshitter and whatever went wrong in their lives, supporting him will only makre it worse. Hopefully, such people will eventually stop supporting conservative shitheads and start looking for real solutions to their issues and the problems facing society at large.
Because it's not as if the right-wing trolls on here are the evil overlords of the world,in fact they are being used by politicians & corporatins who don't want their problems or anyone else's to ever be addressed.
So I will engage with all but the worst anons, and good anons are encouraged to ask questions and not be offended by any lack of response.
