If you received a mixtape/playlist from someone, do you hop it contains a)music they enjoy and wanted to share or b) music they specifically chose because they thought you would enjoy it

shehitsback’s Profile PhotoAllison
Much more along the lines of (b) as I appreciate the need to share but I know most people don’t share my interests and I probably wouldn’t like theirs so I’d prefer something specifically aimed at my interests, which are known
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/music
But which I haven’t heard yet.
It’s always hard to buy gifts of any kind, as they have to be (i) something the person likes, but (ii) something they haven’t discovered yet, so it’s a battlefield.
If it was someone I know, it would have to be in reference to songs that remind us of specific things that we’ve done together, so it doesn’t necessarily have to be something I’d normally be interested in.
The last time I actually got a mixtape (it was a cd) was in 2006 when a friend who listens almost exclusively to ska & reggae made me a cd, it wasn’t bad but I only listen to The Slackers out of those songs today.
I have often considered making my girlfriend a playlist and I admit it would be more (a) as she almost always listens to jazz, which isn’t bad but which I wouldn’t choose to play in my own time.
The most meaningful would be:

I remember one time in 2013 we were going through a bad patch and we were sitting in a bookshop and someone went past and his phone rang and this was his ringtone. Somehow, and this is the magic of Bowie, the mere listening to a few bars of this cause a (mostly) metalhead and a jazz buff to get back together and forgive each other whatever we’d done (or mistakenly) thought we had. Then we went back to her flat and listened to sound and vision and made up.

Fairly obviously about how we live apart, I’m visiting her at the weekend but in general it’s hard to live in different cities as we do.

And this is the jazz in case she hates everything else!

At what age did you learn to ride a bicycle?

When I was about 3 I started to ride a tricycle, then stabilisers, I don't remember when I started to ride without stabilisers but I do remember I was the only pupil in the class (at age 11) who failed the cycling proficiency test!
I had the last laugh though as I probably cycle more than any of them and I love it.

What's the one thing people always misunderstand about you?

That I present as a no-nonsense, facts & figures type, well suited to my account job (which I'm good at) but I have the soul of a poet, a mystic, dreamer.
I'd like to think my blog is the expression of this.

Of course work has to go into the arrangement, research etc but behind all that is the spark that I hope will never die out, of discovery and wonder in the world.
(Yes, it's AC/DC!)

are you a legend

First time I ever went abroad, I didn't go on holiday as a kid as my parents couldn't afford to take me, I went to Moscow when I was 18.
It was spellbinding, through Orlando Figes and Simon Montefiore I'd dreamt of Russia and going there was like being drunk 24/7 (in a good way) as it was so alien, but in a good way.
Kremlin aggression and the stupidity of western "leaders" has made that impossible now but I pray that those days will cone back when everyone stops being an arsehole.

What small gesture from a stranger made a big impact on you?

Yes Fam, I was once on a walk in the Staffordshire Moorlands, the old-time Catholic country of the Earl of Shrewsbury's lands, the land that calls to me.
The bus "service" had very recently been cut and I didn't know this when I sat out, but my chances were walking 6 miles to the town or standing at the bus stop for 2 hours, so I'd just decided to get walking when some kind soul picked me up and took me to town.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/127718037404/at-cheadle-perfect-cheadle-for-saint-giless
He was visiting his mother in hospital, and I knew he'd rather die than take money, so I lit a candle in prayer for him and his mother, though I'm not an especially religious person.
Another time, I went with my parents to Wales and we misjudged the petrol we had, as the signal told us how many miles we can go but we didn't consider that in the hills we'd use up more energy than on the ground, so we actually had less mileage than we thought. So some peoplein a shop told us how to get to the petrol station, which we somehow did, despite being almost out of petrol.
They didn't have to do that, but it was in them to do it, because they are good, loving people. And it's my wish and prayer that someone helps them when they need it.

Which flavor of ice cream is your favorite??

I like rum & raisin if I'm eating just ice cream, but if I'm serving it with something else (sticky toffee pudding or apple crumble, for instance) I eat vanilla or vanilla custard as I don't want the flavours clashing.
The need is always to get ice cream made from good, fresh milk by a skilled creamer, thankfully I know several of these that are made on the farm! :)

I listen to it at 2pm in the afternoon, so I don't know what has happened tonight. I wonder if there's going to be a massive row about cheese, an eruption of the tension that's been building up for 2 days, as big as the row over flapjacks 2 years ago?
I don't know though so no spoilers please :)

What ideas are important to you?

Yes fam, the idea of environmental sustainability has always been important to me, ever since I was about 15 and read Lord of the Rings and was inspired by the struggles of the Ents and their resistance to Saruman the Tree-Killer.
Now this awareness has filtered through my mind and hopefully my actions as well, most notably in my tree-planting journeys with www.treesforlife.org.uk and hopefully in my daily life as well.
Through loving the great outdoors and understanding how fragile the ecosystem really is, most notably in the spate of fires that's happened recently; horrifyingly, one of them was on my own street!
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/post/175599696789/the-flames-have-now-reached-the-very-street-i-live
This was either arson or shocking carelessness but in any case a thoughtless person is to blame, and it's now known that a horrible fire on the Roaches (one of my favourite sites since childhood) was caused by of all things a camp fire!
Although far-right politicians and media shills disagree, this is underpinned by climate change and other environmental problems which exacerbate problems that already exist; how much of the trouble in the Middle East and the Sahel is made worse by overpopulation and desertification?
While we are facing challenges, it certainly isn't a lost cause, and I'd encourage everyone to join in the environmental effort by joining a local voluntary group (there will probably be one of these where you live, even in major cities) and by thinking global & acting local you can have an impact.
Also I would exhort everyone to watch Blue Planet 2 and gobble up all the books & TV you can get by Dave Attenborough as it's fascinating and his tireless efforts will hopefully be paying off in the reduction in plastics we're now starting to see.

What one change would you make to your favourite film or tv show?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
I'd bring back legendary tv show The Village, does anyone remember it?
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04dybc1
I really appreciated it, I was looking forward to seeing what happened to Bert Middleton and his community, because it was a microcosm of historical change as seen by one very old man. Season 2 ends on a cliffhanger but the whole thing ends there, because the unwashed masses took a different view and didn't watch it so we never get to see whether Bert marries Phoebe, fights in World War 2, has children, or what.
https://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-03-31/the-village-was-inspired-by-talking-to-my-dying-father/
I also recognise the scenes, Edale, Chatsworth, Lyme Park, Hayfield and other places. At one time in Hayfield you could see the building that was used as Arnold Hankin's 1920s shop alongside other Village memorabilia, but I don't know if that is still the case.
I haven't actually seen the German series Heimat but I would like to, and I'd like even more to see a British equivalent, but no!

It's World Photo Day today. Post an inspiring photo!

This time in 5 weeks I'll be doing my tree-planting in Scotland!
https://treesforlife.org.uk
In 1991 the first group arrived and planted some trees in an enclosure which was fenced off to avoid being nibbled by deer.
Look at how the area outside the enclosure is almost barren but there's a wealth of trees inside it. When the work gets hard, which it inevitably does, I just look at those trees (25 years old when I took that picture) and think that's what I'm helping bring about.
Isn't that inspiring and the best long-term investment one can make?

Right now, I would like to be in…

I need the next 5 weeks to be over and to be in Scotland, fam!

It's a very raw life but much more rewarding than the everyday. Somehow the hardships of life (there isn't even mains water, you have to drink & wash in a stream!) adds to the fulfilment and the ultimate satisfaction is knowing our work is useful and enduring, which I can't say about my day job.
I don't yet know any of the people I'll be living and working with but I look forward to meeting them as I've been twice and met some terrific people there.
Also spending time in one of my favourite places, Edinburgh!

Have you ever received news about people you know that’s just so shocking that it’s difficult - or impossible - to tell anyone/talk about it? For the second time in my life, today I had some news of this kind!

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
Yes, but I still don't want to talk about it in any specifics?
My admiration for this person has increased anyway, it wasn't exactly a pleasant surprise but once I'd digested the news it was good. So not all surprise revelations are bad!

What hairstyle do you like to see on the opposite gender?

The hairstyle & clothes they feel comfortable in fam, it's the only way.
I do like when my girlfriend ties her hair up in public and then lets it down when we're inside :) But while she knows I like this, I may express a preference but then I let her decide what to do as whatever one's preference may be, trying to make someone do something they don't like is a non starter.
