Really don't want this to become too much of a trend for you but can you give some judgement on my band's recordings too? Particularly "My Heart". Keep in mind they were done with some pretty low budget material. http://www.reverbnation.com/skiesoftomorrow/songs Grazie france :D buon anno!

Where can I find a book which contains relationships between chords and scales? I don't know what scales should i use over jazzy chords :(

The answer is simple: whatever scale that contains the same notes used by your "jazz" chord! Harmony & Theory is a good one, and also google can offer you a million answers to this so don't be afraid to just search it :)

Love ion dissonance! Do you happen to know how to dial in a good tone on a pod hd300?(drop e,emg81)

Aintnogroove’s Profile PhotoJ
I don't have a pod hd so can't help you, but I would surely just fiddle around with it until it sounds decent/good!

I have a skervesen raptor 6string loaded with Black Hawks, but I find them a bit too bassy (especially for palm mutes that are muted heavily). Would I be better of with Aftermaths or Juggernauts? I like the tone of the Blawk hawks a lot when playing single notes though... Happy NY btw ;)

That was my experience with BH too, they have a very broad frequency range and feel very "bassy", as you say. Depends on guitar specs, genre, tuning but definitely Aftermaths would solve the problem. If you're more of a Metal and less Djent guy, try the ceramic Nailbomb instead of Aftermath.

Hey Francesco, fawning over all your guitar pics everywhere, how many guitars do you own currently and in the past? I think I've spotted 4 very colorful ibanez prestige, 2 blackmachines, 2 KxK, and 2 EBMM's? Also what is your studio set up, looks very refined!

Thanks for reminding me I need to add this in the FAQ section :) will up it in some hours.

Thoughts on Tony Danza and War from a harlots mouth?

TTDTE rules, I expecially enjoyed the last album. WFAHM is incredible too, Simon is a great buddy. Too bad they're both disbanded :/ check out Ion Dissonance too, insane stuff.

what is your favorite amp? (top 5)

In no particular order I love EVH 5150III, Friedman Brown Eye, Rivera Knucklehead Tre Reverb, Diezel Hagen & Herbert, Marshall JVM410H, 5150 blockletter and even Fireball 100 for very crushing stuff.

I know even the greatest guitarists in the world have 'strong' techniques and 'weak' techniques. What is your approach about that? Should I play often with the tech which are more 'natural' to me?

Play what feels natural to you, but work on your weak points so that you become more "360°". Last year my biggest improvement was hybrid picking, this year I want to focus on tapping some more :) there is always room for improvement, regardless of your level.

any tip for record a demo progressive rock/metal in house? programs and that haha

I'm adding a FAQ section to my Ask.fm page which will cover that too, just wait until tomorrow :)

About EBMM JP guitars, they look nice, play nice, sound good but for me they're overpriced, I think there are many better options(even cheaper).... they got so much hype because of JP, don't misunderstand me I know they kick asses, I own one.. BTW i love it...what are your thoughts about this?

I have my opinion and you have yours, and that's about it really :D I think you can have the exact same quality (or even more) with a cheaper Carvin, but at the same time I don't find them overpriced at all. Maybe in Europe, since they cost double here :)

https://soundcloud.com/chrizzlea/chrizzlea-thaek-1 Hi Francesco! My first taste of your work was your guest solo on Ryan's track. Really cool stuff. Could you give me an honest opinion about my track? It sort of follows a Sikth\Revocation vibe.

I love the vibe! Some pretty fucking Metal there, keep doing it definitely. Don't like the mix though (I guess you did it yourself), drums are too compressed and also overpower the other elements. Guitar tone could be better too but the good riffs make up for it :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37COporzuMc Can you please be 100% honest with that one too ? even if it is bad

Video is definitely good! Drums sound too plastic-y in my opinion, bass sounds big but a mid muddy, and I admit I don't like the singer's voice, it lacks a bit of power, I think it's his vocal technique itself.
I would have tried to "mask" that with more vocal layers, more saturation, wetness and even a hint of distortion as part of the scream vox treatment. His cleans are ok though! I like the timbre. I would have taken more care with the clean vox during tracking though, forcing him to do better takes. He's kinda off-key at 3:08 which is weird to hear.
Guitars I like a lot, expecially the care you put on the harmonies. Song structure is solid and it seems you have the "big-picture" on your head, drums follow the structure's flow naturally. You also have all a great presence, which doesn't hurt :)

If you had to pick between the two, what cab would you choose if it was free? a Mesa rectifier 2x12, or an Orange PPC 2x12? Just curious :)

Mesa

I want you to be 100% honest! I don't cae how bad is is! It make me grow a little! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGj4TuP25no

Ok :) this is my 100% honest opinion: it's not that bad, I enjoy your singer's vocals and the riffs are very heavy. You don't re-invent the wheel but it's genuine, nothing bad with it. The video itself is a bit too HDR-ish/filtered so a bit cheesy. The mix also lacks glue and sounds a bit amateur-ish, drums would need more balls/volume and vocals more automation, expecially during the gang choirs. I would have taken more care of the intro, too. I guess the budget wasn't too high for video/mix and you made your best with the given resources. Again, nothing bad with it at all but keep in mind no one will think about it this way, they will only see the product for what it is, no excuses involved.
The main problem with the song is at 4:04 when after the scream you'd expect the track to explode, but the drummer continues to play a closed hat feel instead of a big crash vibe going on. Lack of automation in that part after the break doesn't help either.
Outdoor playing has always been weird and clichè in my opinion, but it's not like you're playing in the forest or corn fields, so it's still ok :) also your drummer doesn't seem too much of a hard-hitter, I have no problem with it but it seems like he's a bit bored during the video filming.
Overall I give it a 6.5/10, not perfect but the riffs are \m/ and it shows that you put a lot of energy into it. At least it's not the same djent/widdlewiddle :) Keep doing what you love and send me other stuff when you have it!

Hi Fra, and first of all, happy new year ! I know you're a Nailbomb bridge user, but what do you think of the neck model, and more specifically the lead and clean sounds ? I'm looking for a à la Petrucci lead sound and jazzy cleans on a Jackson DKA7 (alder, maple neck and FB, 26,5"). Thanks a lot :D

Happy 2014 to you, too :) I wouldn't recommend the Nailbomb neck (which I love btw) if you want a Petrucci-ish sound. Aftermath or Cold Sweat neck are way closer in my opinion. I'd suggest Aftermath, since Cold Sweat tends to be brighter with less mids and in your guitar it might be overkill.

what is your favorite wood combination, when it comes to choose 7 or 6 string guitars? :)

It entirely depends on what I want out of the guitar, basically anything can work with other stuff if properly matched :) Although it's very hard to go wrong with ebony fretboard, maple neck, mahogany body and maple top.

Best value 2nd hand Ibanez for ~5-600€? Been looking at 1570's, also seen some early 90's 550's but these are quite hard to find. Anything that I should look for/avoid? Pickups aren't a problem as I plan on replacing them anyway. Cheers brah

Any RG/S from '87 to '92 is going to serve you perfectly. These were so good.

Was this year a good year for you?

Hell yes! Lots of awesome stuff happened in 2013, although it has been more of a transitional year for me and the band. 2014 is so going to OWN, starting from january ;)

I have an all mahogany guitar with a maple board, I own a ceramic nailbomb in the which I adore, time for a neck pickup. I play Mathcore in E standard, I am looking for a singing shred lead tone, responsive to pick attack, but fluid, a good fusion tone, and sparkling cleans, painkiller or VHII? :)

Both will excel at what you ask, it's really up to you. I love both so much :)
