Do you run your Axe direct via USB to your Mac or do you run it through an interface such as a Scarlet THEN to the Mac?

It depends on what I'm doing. Best of both worlds is going digital, but not use the Axe-Fx as the USB interface (kinda unreliable). So basically I use the AES/EBU out from Axe to interface (SPDIF is good too).
I did some tests though and Axe direct via USB sounds better than all the other options, it's a pity the drivers aren't that stable.

What peeks your interest most in musicians you've just met/jammed with? What's the 1st thing you look for in a guitarist, per se?

Finger tone and personality in their playing

what do you think of guitar players getting the axe fx and just not getting an excellent tone (or the tone that they want), and other guys just achieving professional tones on pod farm or similar ?

It's a matter of 1: knowing how to make good tones out of any piece of gear (experience, trained ears etc.) and 2: tone is in the hands mainly, Axe Fx can't save a bad performance!

And what would you recommend if I want to play with no bass in my band, with two 8 string guitars? (not replace the bass as a instrument, only get a decent low end)

That would be a weird decision, but in that case the "good bass spots" need to be filled with more prominent kick drum (a bit more low mids and broader low range) and more headroom and low end on the guitars as well. Or you can just program bass, or just have it in the backing track (AAL style) or put some low-octave synth in that range, or even just play the guitar and de-pitch it one entire octave.
I personally just prefer real bass along with the rest.

Tips for mixing an 8 string? I've been mixing for a couple of months now but need a little help getting everything to sit. The new AAL is what I want to sound like haha

Let's clarify something that I see pop up all the time: "why tune so low, isn't the bass useless like that?".
This is BULLSHIT. The guitar is still a guitar, and the bass is an entirely different instrument, which requires a different approach to shape its tone and to mix it.
Unless you do want the guitar to sound like a bass, the frequency range in which the fundamental guitar frequencies reside is from low to high mids, basically the midrange.
Now, I'm not saying you should shape tones on an 8 string like you do on a 6, actually it's way harder to build a balanced tone with an 8 string given the broader range of notes - but still, we need to make it cut thru the mix like any guitar would. Let the bass cover lows and highs mainly, with a bit of gritty mids to reinforce the guitar tone too.
Regardless of your purpose, I'd take care mainly of the cabinet to achieve something that doesn't sound boomy on the low strings but neither harsh when you go higher, and after that be sure to have the right amp/ampsim so the gain is just enough to sound huge, but still retain clarity on single notes.

which guitar do you recommend for a reasonable price (1000-1500)?

Sorry to be redundant, but Carvin is the best thing you can get within that price range. Nothing beats a custom made in the US for that price.

I'm using Logic Pro 9 with podfarm and Lepou plugins for guitar and Fxpansion's BFD 2 for drums and can't get ANY of it to sound good. I'm sure it's my lack of knowledge with mixing but I can't figure it out. Do you have any tips or good sources of info for beginners? Thanks and keep being awesome!

Try EZDrummer with the Metal Machine expansion and regarding guitar plugins, TSE X50 v2. Hard to go wrong with these!

Hey Francesco. Which one's better ? kemper/axe (digital) or real cabinets with real pedal board full of required stompboxes & pedals (analog) ? I'm guessing.... analog.

It's impossible to answer if you generalize. Depends on the tone and purpose itself!

Hi, Fran! I just started working with the Superior Drummer. I made the entire track without the multichannel option and I found it that I can't really change the sounds of them. So, how can I export the track to multichannel?

Use the BOUNCE feature within Superior Drummer. Such an underrated function!

In your opinion, is the POD HD500 worth the money?

Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. It will be better than a lower priced POD but don't expect Kemper/Axe quality.

When you get a new electronic device, do you honestly read the manual all the way through? Is that realistic for ones that are hundreds of pages long and filled with technical terms that are unfamiliar?

YES! It should be common sense/practice to put all the money you saved and then spent into actually knowing what you're working with. Everytime an unfamiliar technical term comes up, don't be afraid and just google it :) if more technical terms come up from the research, google these too. Always strive to know more, more and more!

Not a question, just wanted to say thanks for the advice on the Emerald (Neck) Juggernaut (Bridge) bridge combo a while back. I put them in the other day and absolutely love them! You were spot on with the Emerald being strat-y. I added a split coil as well and the middle position kicks ass.

Thanks dude, glad you like 'em :)

Have you ever used the Axe FX with a power amp and cab? Thinking about getting one and using it this way.

Yes, it rules but for versatility I just prefer the direct signal :)

Hey Francesco. I know you have quite some experience with the BKP Emerald, and I've been thinking about throwing one in my Suhr's neck position. Is it good for pristine, bright cleans? Also liquidy, fluid lead tones? Or would the VHII be better?

Both are excellent, there's no better just different :) I personally prefer the VH2 a little but pristine/bright cleans = Emerald!

I remember you saying that all your guitars are for sale for the price. With that in mind, I want to buy your '91 Ibanez RG565. The green one ya know? What would you take for it?

tree fiddy millions!

Out of all of the Ibanezes that you own, or have owned, which was is/was your favorite? :D

My RG550 Desert Yellow has the best lead tone out of all my guitars, that one is GODLY!

This may sound silly but what brand is that multi guitar stand you are using ?

You mean the 3-guitar stand? Hercules. The 8 one is a Rockstand
