francesco, there are people who can play fast(at least those who are able to develop skills in short time/faster than the average player) do you think there are opposite cases? people who practice massive hours/concentration, with proper technique however they don't progress as fast as they should

Sure, in every field there are more "naturally gifted" people and others who strive more to get the same results, but this doesn't mean they cannot do it :) I've seen sloppy students become tight machines with time and dedication.
Consistency is key, and if you really believe in what you do, continue to practise and there will be progress. Slow or fast, doesn't matter, just give it time and do your thing properly :)

I know you are busy man how many hours of time do you have to practice? It difficult with two job?

Unfortunately I don't have time to actively practise since some years, but I teach full time so at least I spend a lot of time with the guitar nonetheless, doing and re-doing exercises with students! I guess that's my practice routine these days :)

Hi man, i've seen it seems you know a lot about pickups and guitars :) I've mine loaded with bkp aftermaths, wich i like to play more splitted than full humbucking, i don't like very much that tight tone, i just wanted something more like TOOL sounding, any advice on bridge pickups?

I don't know your guitar's specs, but alnico Nailbomb or Black Dog get very close to a Tool tone imho!

So if the first album will only be 7 strings, does that mean that 'Abiogenesis Part 2' won't be on it??

Not "exactly"... You'll see! Part 2 has stuff from both the album and the release after.

Hey bro, any chance we could get the guest solo you did on Fred Brum's "Frozen Soul" as an isolated track/part? Really want to transcribe that solo as best as possible! Thanks anyway :D

Yes! And don't worry, I just finished doing a tab for it :) I'll publish isolated stems and also DIs asap!

Hey Francesco! This may be a weird and stupid question but do you hear a tonal difference in different tunings? By that would mean playing a riff that was recorded in E standard would sound different if played two frets lower in D standard

Absolutely! Sometimes a riff just sounds "right" in a certain tuning, and when transposed lower or higher, it just loses its thing. That's why I catalogue riffs within tunings or keys.

Hi Francesco! Your playing is very pleasing to both my ears and eyes. Would you consider yourself more of a six string player, a seven string player or you just love them both equally?

I definitely find myself more at home with 7 strings, they just feel super natural to me.

How would you divide up the Abiogenesis album amongst 6, 7, and 8 string guitars? Also, what do you do for a living?

Our first album will only be on 7 string, release after that will definitely include 8 string and even some 6 string stuff if possible :) I teach guitar for a living!

Hey Francesco! I know you said earlier about a september release for Abiogenesis but I was hoping maybe we could hear some pre-pro stuff (just like a teaser)? My body has been ready since the beginning! Also, did that fast riff from the 'new Abiogenesis ideas' make it into a song, please say yes!!

everything that you see on youtube related to "Abiogenesis riffs/ideas" is part of actual songs, yes :)

In laymans terms, what are the differences between profiling on the Kemper and tonematching one the Axe?

Profiling on the Kemper = actual cloning the amp's signal. Not 100% nailed yet on the machine, but it gets close enough for sure.
Tonematching on the Axe-Fx (or Match EQ on Ozone/Amp Match on Positive Grid) = matches only the EQ portion, so the original and matched tone share the exact same frequencies, but not the same character at all (you could tonematch a distorted signal with a clean signal, they would have the same EQ but definitely not the same sound). In this case, you still need to do a big part of the work by replicating the exact same amp chain on yout digital device to obtain something that is close.
I Tonematched an EVH 5150III with my Axe Fx II by replicating the same chain and then applying the tonematch, if done right it gets pretty close, here's the file: http://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5864881/Tonematch.wav
First half is one of the two, second half is the other. Which is which? :)

Hey there Fran! Just curious, have you ever been to Canada? Or have you ever wanted to go? What did you like most about it if you already have, or what's the biggest reason you would want to go if you still have yet to?

Dylan Hunt
Good question! I'd LOVE to go there, because Canada is everything that is good about the US, without everything that is bad in the US :) or at least I think so haha. And the cold weather...I can live with it!

How much more expensive in general are American guitars in Europe than North America?

WAY TOO MUCH. At least certain brands. Sometimes even double the price!

What fretboard are you considering for your DC800? Still flame/birdseye maple or something different this time?

Either ebony or something I'll outsource myself :)

how do you learn songs that are above your current skill level?

Three things:
- do exercises from which these songs are based, so I can get the basic movement down
- slow down parts of the song to be able to play them CLEAN, and only when they're CLEEEEANNN then I raise the metronome +10bpm or something like that
- if you still can't manage, dissect! Separate riffs/licks into even smaller sections, giving priority to the ones that are more difficult to achieve for you
Hope that helps!

Hey Fran. The thing I respect about you most is your determination to work for what you want. I'm such a lazy arse shit and I wish I could be more motivated and work harder like you. You're inspirational in that way, and it goes to show that hard work and determination goes a long way. Cheers.

Thank you so much man, it really means a lot, especially when my family doesn't support what I do - I'm only left with myself and people/friends/students who appreciate what I'm doing :)

Hi Francesco, I saw that lots of people use Black Hawk on their JP, what's your opinion on those pickup on JPs?how are they compared to crunchLab-Liquifire combo? BTW, what's your opinion about the new Illuminators? how are they compared to crunchLab-Liquifire combo? Thanks!

Honestly I don't like them on JPs, at least BFRs. They tend to be very warm/compressed with plenty of low end already, and Black Hawks are very bassy and compressed sounding, so the low end is too much and dynamics are sacrificed.
The difference compared to Crunchlab/Liquifire is not that noticeable since they're both compressed pickups, I'd say Blackhawks are a bit more broad with more frequency range, and are more balanced across the spectrum but with plenty of low end. CL/LF are more mid-oriented, but still very compressed and high output.
I don't particularily like Illuminators, they're full and good for leads/cleans but for rhythm I think they have a very deep but not that tight low end. Nothing that some tweaking on the Axe Fx can't solve, but this is just my two cents :)

Are there any weaknesses with the Axe FX II that you have encountered?

Not exactly weaknesses but I would do these things to improve it (which hopefully will be addressed once Axe-Fx III comes out):
- two front inputs with equal specs and sound quality
- choice to use different buffers than 48khz when using digital outputs
- transparent mic preamp xlr input to capture IRs/tonematch stuff more easily
- better USB interface drivers
- lots of amps are great but more pedals wouldn't hurt
- choice to use more than two cabinet blocks per preset without the need of Cab Lab to combine stuff, basically a Cab Lab built into the Axe Fx/Axe Edit
- an actual profiler like the Kemper built-in, not only a "tonematch" block which actually is just eq-match
I'm probably missing something but I guess that's enough :) it's mainly minor stuff though, I'm incredibly happy with the Axe and I'm so used to it that I don't foresee playing anything else for a long time.

Hi, francesco :) any suggestion on some guitar builder that deserve some attention in europe? I'm going to order a custom guitar next month, but I'm not sure on who will be building my next axe... Thanks

I tend to say this a lot, but keep in mind that regardless of whom you choose, you'll wait a lot - AT LEAST one year but sometimes even more than 2 years, depending on the luthier/company's backlog. If the choice is within Europe only, generally speaking polish guys know their shit.
