I'm the one who asked the EE question. The question was impossible to answer. I didn't state the consumption or loss on the wire, just the transformer efficiency. I didn't know if you would actually do the math, it was more of a test of whether or not you'd be able to recognize it was impossible.
Do you ever get stuck in traffic on the way home from work? It seems like you wouldn't because it's such a small town and if I'm not mistaken you live like 10 minutes from campus
Less than that, I live like two minutes away. Traffic is never a problem.
Sweet iced tea or unsweetened iced tea?
Neither.
Do you think maybe rocks are actually animals that are so highly evolved, they've tricked our senses into thinking they're inanimate?
No.
Thank you so much for responding to that engineering question. You, yes, you sir, have made everybody that visits your ask.fm page smarter. Not very many places on the internet can claim that.
I don't think the automatic organ had any trouble playing it. Also why you'd want to introduce a solo into Stars and Stripes Forever is beyond me.
Since I can ask you ANYTHING...an electric power plant generates electricity at 22kV and 100A. The voltage is stepped up to 240kV before being transmitted to a city 15km away over a copper wire that has a radius of 2mm. If the transformer is 95% efficient, and the price of electricity is 15¢/kWh...
(cont.) ...how much money is saved per day by stepping the voltage up instead of transmitting it at the original voltage? ---------------------------I never got into much electrical engineering, but I'll take a stab at it and I'll try to explain my reasoning along the way.First things first, let's get the resistance of that copper wire, we'll need this for determining power loss in both cases.R = P * L / A, where P = resistivity of the material (in ohm*meters), L = length (in meters), A = cross-sectional area (in meters^2). For a 15000m copper wire with radius .002m, resistance is calculated as:R = (1.7 x 10^-8) * 15000 / (pi * .002^2) = 20.292 ohms.Let's calculate power loss incurred over the wire WITHOUT stepping up the voltage.I = current = 100A P = power loss = I^2 * R = 100^2 * 20.292 = 202920 WNow the slightly trickier one, let's calculate power loss when you step up the voltage.First we need the current (I) of the new transmission. To do this we'll want to know the wattage of the generated electricity, which is simply 22000 v * 100 A = 2200000 W. We also need to take into account the .95 efficiency of the transformer. Also remember the voltage of the new transmission is 240000 V. With this in mind, we find our new I by calculating:2200000 * .95 = 240000 * I, after some algebra we find I = 8.708 AFor power loss over the wire:P = power loss = I^2 * R = 8.708^2 * 20.292 = 1538.727 WCombine that with the wattage lost through the inefficient conversion (2200000 * .05 = 110000 W) and the total power loss is 111538.727 W.The difference between the two is 202920 - 111538.727 = 91381.273 W.91.381273 kW * 24 hr = 2193.150552 kWh.At $0.15/kWh that leads to a total savings of $328.97 per day.
if you had one wish, would you use it on world peace?
That wouldn't be a bad wish, though realistically you'd have to be overriding people's wills to do that so I'm not sure any wish-granting entity would be able or willing to pull that off. I think something like eradicating hunger (infinite food resources) would be more in the realm of possibility.
would you ever like to go on an rpg like adventure with you being the main character. and secondary question, if it was based off a real game, what game would you choose if you could. again you are the main character
I would be the most boring main character ever created. I'm happy with just having a somewhat normal time so I'll pass on the adventure.
Favorite race-track on Mario Kart 64?
There are so many good ones it's hard to pick. I'm gonna say Toad's Turnpike on mirror mode.
Riddle me this: If you have me,you'll want to Share me...but if you share me...I'll be gone...What am I?
A secret.
You don't know what you're missing.
It's not that I refused to watch it out of some sort of aversion, I just never happened to catch it as a kid and sort of lost interest in superhero cartoons.
It's still literally everywhere. Players haven't been dissuaded from cheating in any way. I guess it's better that they're at least actively going after people but if there aren't any results it's hard to say they're doing any better all things considered.
Do you think Ryan Braun should have his NL MVP title taken away because of his PED use?
I think he should be out of baseball entirely. They need to be stricter, this is a slap on the wrist for him. This season was a lost cause anyway, the Brewers aren't making the playoffs. Being suspended without pay is also a complete non-issue. He's still a multimillionaire.
Would you rather fight 100 duck-sized horses, or 1 horse-sized duck?
Fighting 100 tiny horses sounds like some kind of nightmare. I'll take the big ol' duck please.
Sometimes if I'm ever in a similar situation. The key is to remember that, one, it's in the past so there's not a lot you can do about it, and two, you're probably thinking about it way more than anyone else is. No sense getting hung up on things that have already happened.
Do you ever think you may be retarded, but you're too retarded to realize it?
No, mostly because mental retardation is an actual, diagnosable disorder that manifests well before adulthood.
