Since you enjoy reading Grantland, what do you think about FiveThirtyEight?

Don't read a whole lot of it, but don't mind it when I do.

What's your favorite salad place? Assume you must purchase a salad, not just the ingredients so you can make it at home.

I'm not a huge salad guy, honestly.
(Hi, Sarah.)

What do you think can and should be improved about esports journalism? What niches are currently absent or underdeveloped?

Pretty much everything is currently absent or underdeveloped except the bare minimum (match results, roster changes, etc.). I guess there are a lot of player interviews, but a lot of them are kinda boring.
I think the main sin eSports journalism commits, though, is simply that the depth of storytelling and quality of writing aren't near what they could be. I don't follow much sports writing, but I'll click on any Grantland article I find and feel better for having read it. That shit just takes practice, work, and time, though.

sorry about asking you bout Triforce, is just that he rants for hours on OBS about how the FGC is this and that (being misinformed of course) and noone ever counter his BS, Id love it if once you could go into that show and counter all his BS

Eh, don't worry about it.
I don't know the guy personally. I know he's done some nice things for people and some not-so-nice-things to people. I also know has been doing this thing for over a decade now and has had fuck-all to show for it, so I feel sorry for people who take him seriously. His sponsored players are competing for a trip to Evo (i.e. they're competing for sponsorship), for crying out loud. Pretty much anyone worth a damn disassociates from him eventually.
Not to mention: The guy is planning to get deported from France in order to avoid having to pay for a ticket. He wears a god damn Power Glove. He was first in line to buy the Wii U. Didn't he get caught sending some kid dick pics? And Triforce is his legal name.
And when it comes down to it, I think it's much easier to believe that there's an illuminati out there making sure you don't succeed than it is to face the fact that you aren't successful because you're not good at what you do.
I do worry about the people who get sucked up into EMP. From the outside, it looks halfway between a cult and a pyramid scheme. In BJJ, there's a guy named Lloyd Irvin who runs a highly-competitive team that is basically a cult, and some scumbags from that competitive team raped one of their fellow teammates in a damn parking garage. (Irvin also teaches some expensive sleazy martial arts marketing seminars.) I'm no expert, but it sounds like an environment with the potential for emotional and physical abuse.

What's your favorite character design in a fighter, gameplay-wise?

Personally, I think Ryu has some of the most beautiful and elegant design in a fighting game -- which is why I've been sticking to Ryu pretty much nonstop for the last year or so. He rewards cerebral play and meticulous opponent/matchup study, and both of those are things I want to get good at.
As far as creativity, I think Eddie/Zato-1 in Guilty Gear still has the crown. Giving me a second character that responds to button releases is just a HOLY SHIT kind of thing! I've been wracking my brain trying to figure out some kind of equivalent design for, say, a LoL champion and it's really hard (maybe having a ghost that follows the mouse cursor? idk).

what do you think about Triforce saying the community is so rancid and has be burned down so it can be rebuilt?

I think that's pretty dumb! The community is in better shape than it ever has been literally ever -- we have a thriving tournament scene, lots of regular competitors, grassroots community businesses, and we're getting more new fighting games than pretty much at any point since the post-SF2 boom. Hell, even the publishers are involved in ways they've never been before. EMP isn't doing so well, so maybe that's why he wants to burn them down.
Also, I don't think "burning things down to rebuild them" is typically the best way to go about architecting a community.
Why do people keep asking me about Triforce? I don't think I've ever heard about something he said and thought, "Yup, I'm a better person for having heard that."

What are your thoughts on age and capability in competitive gaming? There's a LOT of talk about how mid-20s is "old" for esports, but fighting games are arguably even more skill and reaction-intensive, and The Beast is in his third decade.

Depends on the game, but honestly, I really don't think that we're playing games where our physical reactions and age-related deterioration is really determining things. I think that doing homework and studying people so you're more prepared to react and anticipate moves is more important than raw reaction speed.

if someone you hated were about to commit suicide, would you try to talk them out of it?

I think so, yeah.

I HEARD YOU WROTE A BOOK. WHAT BOOK IS THIS, SO I MIGHT DIRECT MY OCULAR DEVICES UPON ITS TEXT?

I haven't announced anything! :X

Do you think there is a reason people call Apologyman by his real name on commentary so much? It happens with some players more than others for some reason that I can't figure out.

My guess: "Vin-eeth" is two syllables, "A-po-lo-gy-man" is five. And there aren't any other well-known Vineeths in the scene, so there's little risk of confusion.

I'm planning on playing GG Xrd when it's out! I play that and UMVC3, what more do you want from me

Hey man, sorry about never getting around to looking at that FGC text you asked me (and others) to look at. Life has been chaotic (and I forgot). What's going on with that? Still kicking it around? Sorry for being vague, wasn't sure if I should state what it was.

No worries! Lots of good people are helping out with it :)

Pet peeves! Sound 'em out!

When I give someone a ride and they don't lock my damn car door; people that don't realize they tell the same story over and over (though I am guilty of this too); A-Blanka in CVS2.

is it true what triforce says that SRK makes 2 million dollars a year?

to be honest, i haven't seen the numbers! the business of online advertising (which is SRK's only revenue that i'm aware of) is not particularly profitable, though, and $2m is a lot of money for a site doesn't have a whole lot of full-time employees. and uh, considering i haven't seen the numbers, i find it highly unlikely that triforce has, especially considering he doesn't really have any expertise with this kind of thing (making money, i mean).

Since you're asking for questions, I got one: besides BJJ are there any other disciplines you'd like to try learning?

I've trained a moderate amount of boxing and muay thai, and a little bit of standup grappling (wrestling and judo); also did shotokan karate for a year and trained with some Daidojuku guys for a few months. i think once my body starts getting too old for harder stuff i'd like to try some of the slow fun internal martial arts, but really, I wanna do BJJ forever.
