I can't tell you exactly how because it's a completely different process from one person to another. What you look for - personality traits, interests, signs - in a significant other is not the same as what I look for.
I could tell you that s/he might be the one if you cannot stop hoping against hope that s/he would love you back, no matter how hard you try, but you might be the kind of person who moves on to the next one regardless of what you felt. I could tell you that s/he might be the one if s/he manages to get you to change your ways and be a better person, but you might be the kind of person who doesn't need or want to change the way he is. I could tell you that s/he might be the one if you two are almost alike, but you might be the kind of person who wants someone with whom you wildly contrast.
Or, OR - you think you know what you want, then all of a sudden a person who does not fit any of your criteria comes along and changes the whole game for you.

If that don't get you then we'll probably not work out.
