The rating system is almost completely arbitrary anymore. Especially when you have dumbasses for parents taking young kids to see films like Deadpool. My two-year old brother loves Marvel, Deadpool is a Marvel property, but no way in hell am I showing him Deadpool for a while.
I agree with Doug. Movie makers should make the movie they want to make, and just stick by the rating. Don't compromise. People will still watch it. Fun fact; Marvel's The Avengers was almost an R movie because they showed Coulson getting stabbed originally. Also, I love how the first word in The Avengers: Age of Ultron is literally Tony yelling "Shit!" and it's PG-13.
I feel like some movies were shittier because they tried to hit that oh so important rating. Most of the X-Men films anyone? Even though I never watched them, I always wondered how they were going to do Hunger Games if they didn't show kids dying. Especially the ending of Mokingjay. Kind of the point of the story.
Another example I can think of is when I watched the Ultimate Edition of Batman v Superman. It was rated R. I saw nothing that should have gotten it that. Like, at all. 10 seconds of Ben Affleck's ass. And you have to actually pay attention to see it. But let's be real, who paid attention to that movie?
You don't have to be a certain rating to be great movies. I case in point Deadpool, The Lion King, Toy Story, The Dark Knight, The Godfather. Two Rs, two Gs, and a PG-13. All of them were phenomenal movies. I don't have an example of a good NC-17/X rated movie. Have yet to see one. They're too cheesy in my opinion. Or at least the ones that try to have story.
They should absolutely either fully update the ratings system, or do away with it. And there should be less emphasis on hitting a certain rating and just make a good movie. So long as you don't straight up make porn, or do I don't fucking care, there shouldn't be too much of a problem. Your movie will be a success and make money. And at the end of the day that's all they want.
