What it means to be a friend- 13

**Private, sorry about that! I also hit ask by accident before looking the question over, so sorry if it sounded weird.**

It's ok I do it all the time too! Thank you for clearing that up though! So considerate!

I'm torn between two things. I can take provite voice lessons, which I need, or I can be in a community theatre show, which I also need.

On the end it's up to you but voice lessons could help you more on the long term if you Perdue a reforming career whereas you may be able to perform in shows later in life. the earlier you start voice lessons the better.

All my dream roles are blondes....... Does this mean something?

Nah! It just show that you're true to who you are and aren't afraid to show it! Characters who happen to be blonde (galinda, Elle woods, doralee Rhodes) often disprove the blonde stereotype and show unexpected strength! Go for it girl! And go blondes!

Ok so I may audition for Doralee Rhodes..... Audition songs and I need an outfit....

Think Dolly Parton! Not too over the top but just enough! Maybe sing one of her songs or if you have to choose a musical theatre song choose something with a bit of twang maybe from Bonnie and Clyde or even Oklahoma! Make sure you be BIG and ooze confidence. As for an outfit, take inspiration from Dolly but please don't go too over the top! Sparkles, bling, but please no procedures!

What is one thing that many people don't know about you?

I've been an extra in a movie... They may not know that

I guess that makes sense. I was just wondering because my director at my school picks a song from the show and then there's auditions. but that makes sense

It depends on the director, sometimes they want to hear a song from the show to help with casting, sometimes they don't because if you sing a song form the show they might have a hard time seeing you as another character

why do people use songs not in shows they audition for?

Sometimes if you sing a song from the show you are auditioning for it can send the wrong message. Also the director may not like how you sound for that particular song and it can affect you being cast. If you sing a song not from the show that you now your good at you may have better chances at being cast. Those are my reasons some people have different reasons

To apply to a college to study theatre, being in plays/musicals is a must (obviously). How many do you think one should be in before applying? And do you HAVE to be a lead in most of them, or can someone whose always been in ensemble get into somewhere like NYU or Carnegie Mellon?

I'm not entirely sure seeing as I haven't applied to any colleges yet, but I imagine it depends on the school. Some schools may require you to have done a certain amount of shows and some may not. Although being in several shows may help whether your accepted or not! Also being a lead may help you get accepted like if a scout from the school sees your performance. But if your usually in ensemble it may mean that a show or a part for you just hasn't come your way yet! The directors/ theatre professors at said colleges may see something in you that no director has seen yet! So it may not even make a difference!

How do I project without sounding like a dying cat? The louder I sing, the more it sounds like I'm struggling too.

Work on breath control! Once your breathing is controlled and steady, the more powerful you can project. Try exercises like laying flat on your back on the floor while singing. This forces you to breath from your diaphragm. Also try singing a note and holding it out for as long as possible! And time yourself while doing it! At first you may only be able to hold it for maybe 10 seconds but if you do it every day it will get longer. Correct breathing is the key to proper projection!
