“Jongin,” Kyungsoo says, tone deceptively calm. “We are stuck in a closet. Why are we stuck in a closet?”

Jongin swallows. “I thought there was something inside it,” Jongin answers weakly.

This is not going to end well, Jongin thinks to himself. “Narnia,” he replies. “You know! Like in the book. You… you never know, right? Whenever I see a closet, I always check just to make sure – ”

“Jongin, do you also believe in Santa Claus?” Kyungsoo cuts in.

He doesn’t answer. Kyungsoo waits ten seconds before he gives into the urge to put his hands around Jongin’s neck.

Baekhyun makes an off-handed noise and waves his hand. “They’re probably making out or something,” he says. “Just let them do their thing and try not to think about it too much.”

“Are you two really dating?” Jongdae asks as he watches Baekhyun and Chanyeol fight each other in an attempt to claim the best poster spot in the cafeteria. “Because, wow, the sex must be crazy violent.”

“Well, Chanyeol has a tendency to lose control of his limbs, which kind of hurts sometimes,” Baekhyun says, alarmingly calm as he shoves an elbow into the flesh under Chanyeol’s ribs.

Chanyeol laughs in a way that makes him sound more alarmed than amused. “Well,” he shoots back, “Baekhyun is a biter. Outta my way, shorty, you can’t even reach that high on the wall –”

Baekhyun steps on his toe and Chanyeol yelps. “Damn,” Jongdae says. “This is like watching a trashy reality TV show. I want to tear my eyes away so badly, and yet I can’t. This can’t possibly be healthy for your relationship.”

“We keep our personal and professional lives separate,” Baekhyun says smoothly, shoving Chanyeol out of the way and taping up his poster before Chanyeol can react.

Chanyeol, though, manages to claim the space directly above Baekhyun’s poster and puts up his own sign, all while struggling against Baekhyun’s attempt to keep him away. “This is nothing new anyway, Baekhyun always pushes me around,” Chanyeol adds.

“Don’t worry, he enjoys it,” Baekhyun says.

Jongdae wrinkles his nose. “I can’t tell if you guys are fighting or flirting and that disturbs me,” he mutters.

They’re walking back from their university when Minseok spots the box on the side of the road. “Look, a puppy,” he says, crouching down to get a better look at it. “Cute, right?”

Lu Han’s not much of a dog person, but he sits himself down next to Minseok anyway. “It’s been abandoned, I guess. That’s so sad,” he says.

Minseok holds a hand out for the puppy to sniff, and smiles slightly when it licks his palm. “It’s friendly,” he murmurs. “Too bad. I’d take it back home with me if I had the space, but…”

Minseok, Lu Han knows, lives with two roommates in a space that was not designed for three adult men to cohabitate in. “I can take it,” he says, before he can really think about what he’s saying. “I’ll take it to my home.”

“Are you sure?” Minseok asks. “Taking care of a pet is hard, you know – you’ll have to get it shots, and all sorts of other stuff.”

Lu Han swallows. “Yeah, I’m sure,” he says. “Besides, you’ll help me take care of it, right?”

Minseok smiles wide and Lu Han goes a little light-headed.

“Let’s end this,” Kyungsoo says, just as Baekhyun’s stuck a forkful of spaghetti into his mouth.

Baekhyun forgets how to chew for a few moments, but remembers his manners well enough to attempt to choke down the noodles before he replies. “What?” he asks blankly.

“I want to break up,” Kyungsoo says. “You have tomato sauce on you. No, not on that side – the other. Yeah, over there.”

This conversation is surreal, Baekhyun thinks to himself as he lets Kyungsoo direct him. “Are you unhappy or something?” he asks “I just – I don’t know. I didn’t expect this. Not at all.”

Kyungsoo sighs. “I know. I’m sorry.”

---

“Is that it?” Baekhyun replies. “I’m sorry. Let’s break up. That’s all there is to it?”

---

“Yes,” Kyungsoo answers.

---

“Well, I guess this way of wrapping things up is rather like you,” Baekhyun says. He’s not quite angry, not quite sad – just confused. “But, you know, I still like you, Kyungsoo. I still like you a lot.”

“I thought it would be worse, if I tried to keep going like this until you realized that you like me in a different way than I like you. That it would be easier this way, for the both of us,” Kyungsoo replies. He takes a sip of water.

Baekhyun inhales and closes his eyes. “Okay, then,” he says. “Let’s break up.”

“Thank you,” Kyungsoo says. At least he sounds grateful, Baekhyun thinks.

“Whoa, Yixing,” Lu Han says, grinning as he points out towards the horizon. “I can see your house from here!”

Yixing brings a hand up to shield his eyes and squints out into the distance. “That’s not my house,” he says. “It’s in the other direction. And it’s too small for us to be able to see it, I think.”

Lu Han laughs as he steps onto the bottom rail of the fences surrounding the roof, using his hands to balance. “Yeah, I know. I just wanted to say something cliché like that, you know what I mean?”

“Weirdo,” Yixing says, but he smiles and puts a hand on Lu Han’s back. “Don’t do that, though, you make me nervous.”

“Are you worrying about me? I’m not planning on tipping over, you know,” Lu Han says. He leans into the touch and falls backwards – Yixing half-catches him, letting Lu Han’s weight carry them a few steps away from the edge.

Yixing wraps his other arm around Lu Han, clasping his hands over his stomach. “Well, knowing you, you’d find a way to make it down alive and well,” he murmurs.

Lu Han rests his head on Yixing’s shoulder and laughs. “More like you’d find a way to save me, right?”

“No way,” Yixing says. “I’m scared of heights.”

Baekhee walks into the lunchroom and Sehun nearly ends up with a lapful of noodles and soup. “Chanyeol hyung, you need to get your life under control,” Sehun says, watching as Chanyeol attempts to regain motor function over his hands, setting his bowl down on the table before he can lose control again. “You are so blindingly obvious that it’s a minor miracle Baekhee noona has yet to notice your gigantic crush on her.”

“Like you’re one to talk,” Chanyeol retorts, simultaneously attempting to sulk over Sehun’s comment and discreetly gawk at Baekhee as she says something to Joonmi and laughs. “Have you managed to say anything besides ‘good morning’ to Lu Han yet? Incoherent stuttering doesn’t count.”

“I don’t stutter,” Sehun informs him. “I just – ah, uh. Mm.”

Chanyeol doesn’t even have to turn around to know that Lu Han must’ve just walked in. “What was that about getting your life under control?” Chanyeol asks, grinning widely as Sehun gapes.

“Quick, look cool,” Sehun mutters, pushing at Chanyeol’s arm lightly. “They’re coming over here.”

Both of them freeze unnaturally as Baekhee and Lu Han stride past them, and neither of them move until the two of them have already sat down on the other side of the room. “I think,” Chanyeol finally says, “that was probably really uncool.”

Sumin doesn’t tell him about her parents until roughly two minutes before they walk through the door. “So, I know this is a shitty time to inform you of this and I should have done this way earlier,” she blurts out just as Chiwoong rings the doorbell. “But my parents are, uh, both dads. By which I mean they’re both men.”

He turns to look at her. “Well, better later than never,” he says evenly. She can’t quite read his expression, and that makes her intensely nervous.

---

“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry,” she mutters.

---

Something in Chiwoong’s eyes softens a little, and he reaches over to squeeze her hand. “Hey,” he says. “No worries. Your parents are your parents – all I have to do is win them over and there’s no problem, right?”

She clears her throat and tries to not look as relieved as she feels. “Jongin-appa, the taller one, he looks more intimidating,” she says. “Don’t be fooled, though. It’s Kyungsoo-appa who’s the hard one.”

“Duly noted,” he replies. The door opens, and Sumin watches in faint horror as her parents jostle each other to get a better look at Chiwoong.

“Welcome!” Kyungsoo says. “Chiwoong, right? We have heard surprisingly little about you, almost as if Sumin was purposely trying to not talk about you or something. Jongin, stop elbowing me.”

Sumin rolls her eyes and pushes them to either side as she pulls Chiwoong through the doorway.

The dinner is awkwardly silent until Jongin asks, “So, do you want to see Sumin’s embarrassing baby photos after we’re done eating?”

“Dad,” Sumin says exasperatedly just as Chiwoong grins and answers, “Yeah, why not?”

After the ice is broken, Kyungsoo spends the next twenty minutes grilling Chiwoong over everything from future career path to how many siblings he has. Chiwoong, to his credit, answers with far more calm than Sumin thinks she’s ever witnessed in her entire life. “I think that’s enough,” Sumin cuts in, before the questions get too outrageous. “Chiwoong wants to eat, too.”

Kyungsoo clears his throat. “Sorry,” he says, before getting up rather quickly to move the rice cooker from the kitchen to the dining room.

“So, was that good or not?” Chiwoong mutters out of the corner of his mouth, while Kyungsoo’s back is still turned.

Sumin looks to her other side to where Jongin is sitting. He nods and gives a solemn thumbs-up to Chiwoong, who grins in relief.

“Your parents are pretty cool, Sumin,” Chiwoong says as they get in his car to go back to their university dorms.

Sumin turns to give him a look. “Wow, no,” she replies. “They are, like, anti-cool. They were in a boy band, for god’s sake. It doesn’t get any more tryhard than that.”

Chiwoong just laughs. “I know we’re obligated to think that about our own parents, but you gotta admit that they’re alright.”

i was raised the Asian Way and so i started learning math when i was like.... 4 or something, haha. i distinctly remember doing my first algebra problem in 2nd grade which raises the question of what does a second grader even need algebra for? so for a long time, i didn't really know if i was good at math or it's because my parents taught me obscenely early :') i always got good grades in the subject throughout high school, but i never really felt anything ~~~special towards it. ah, but maybe my teachers felt the potential or something because my senior year i won the department award for it, which surprised me most of all, tbh.

when i started college, i thought i would get a math minor and then finish my professional relationship with math, but then i took my first math theory class and my general appreciation of math turned into full-blown infatuation which has mellowed into a long-term love thereof :') at this point, i take math classes primarily because i enjoy them; filling the major is less something i'm consciously working towards as something that i will just happen to have done, haha.

being triggered is a very traumatic experience and not one that i feel like i would be comfortable writing, or one that i could even do justice in the first place. i mean, people probably know this already, but the experience of being triggered is a very serious, very emotionally draining one. it can seriously impair a person's ability to function in daily life. in short: it sucks. like, imagine that you /think/ that you've gotten over the worst experience of your life and then, bam, there it comes back again when you least expect it, or over something incredibly innocuous. and it's like -- "wow, maybe i really was never over it. maybe i'll never be over it." that in and of itself is such a hopeless feeling, and it only begins to scratch the surface.

coming from a slightly different standpoint: when i write, i try my best to go by the rule "show, don't tell" as much as possible. i can tell people things like "being triggered is traumatic", but how can i possibly begin to show people how shitty it feels? how incredibly dehabilitating it can be? (this is bit of a colder viewpoint, i think. i am trying not to be too emotionally involved in how i answer this, so that i can respond as fairly as possible, though.)
