based off of the information you gave me, i do think he has an interest in you but is shy to talk/approach you because he sees that you prefer to be on your own. i don't like the word loner - you are independent! and that's a good thing.
however, you won't ever know what his intentions are or what he's feeling unless you step out of your comfort zone and simply, ask him. there's no harm in at least asking or speaking to him to get a direct answer so that you won't be left wondering. i know it can be intimidating, especially since you mentioned that he's part of the popular crowd at school, but he's the one that seems to be invading your space which gives you the right to speak up and directly talk to him about it.

congrats on wanting to start your first book! it's exciting, but also hard work. you definitely want to make sure you have a solid plot, character arcs + growth plans, setting, and timeline thought out before you even begin writing. if you have all those down first, it'll be easier to write since you'll have a structure/guideline to follow.
i started writing in middle school but didn't start publishing my works until i was in college. it's a hobby of mine that i do for fun, which is why my writing is still very amateur. i've always loved it and it's one of things that i can do to express my creativity and imagination. you want to make sure that your own unique voice makes it through your writing!
