what are the first things that you think someone should work on if trying to play melee competitively? i started a few months ago and i am able to wavedash consistently and L-cancel somewhat consistently. I am in between fox, falco, shiek, and marth as the character i want to dedicate fully to.

Recovery (this is often forgotten), basic BnBs, controlling your character/spacing, DO NOT LEARN WAVEDASHING until you're at least decent at the game, edgeguarding and most importantly, try to understand how the fundamentals work.
An easy quote to describe how important fundamentals are:
"You can practice shooting eight hours a day, but if your technique is wrong, then all you become is very good at shooting the wrong way. Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise.”
Michael Jordan"

You mentioned that you don't like how "modern" marth players use him. As a fairly new Marth player, I must say I'm curious what you meant by that

tldr version: They try to play him like a spacie, rely on gimmicks and have terrible fundamentals.

Hello leffen. I'm 16 years old and I've started playing Melee about 1 year ago, so I'm really not that experienced. Do you think it's "worth" to still try and go pro in this game? Do you think Melee will die soon in the future? I'm really insecure and I think you're the best one to answer that.

Melee is most likely going to be alive for a couple more years at least, but it all depends on how much you like the game, how much you're willing to travel and how your local scene is if its gonna be worth it to you.
I will say that as long as you try to focus on learning skills that will help you in other aspects of life, playing melee can be a very good learning experience. If you sit and practice doubleshines 7 hours a day however... well, you'll just be wasting time.

Will you give us some fashion tips?

Uh, I guess one good tip is to get inspiration from others and add your own little twist to it. If you're lazy, just find a celebrity/model that looks similar to you and copy that shit.

I was just wondering, how come ice and you always have really close matches? Because I feel like you perform so much better against other players than he does, but he always gives you trouble. Does his style counter yours or is he just better than I think? Also can you do an octuple shine?(8 shines)

First of, Ice is really good. However, it is true that I'm relatively bad in the Sheik matchup altho I've been steadily improving. Before my retirement in 2013 I beat him/outplaced him by a much bigger margin but that was also before he switched to using only Sheik.

How would I know when you are streaming?

I'll try to announce it a bit ahead of time through twitter, and I'll also post once I start streaming. You could also follow me at www.twitch.tv/lffn and get email notifications and whatnot when I start streaming.
Most likely I won't stream until this weekend since I want to recover from BEAST and spend some time with my non-smasher friends, but friday/saturday is pretty likely dates for me to stream. I'll probably go through my experience at BEAST, play some smash with people from my area, and analyze some of my own and others matches ;)

How good is Marth compared to Fox, Falco, Sheik, Puff, Falcon, Peach, in your opinion? Congrats on BEAST :)

Marth is IMO the best character in PAL (Falco/Puff might be better though) and around 1-3rd in NTSC.
Having a ~7-3 matchup vs the two most common characters on FD is not to be underestimated.
I think all of the top tier are very close though, and your success with each is more likely a compatibility question than anything else.

Who would you rank as the top 5 marth players? including pros who use marth as a secondary

1. M2K
2. PP
3. TAJ
4. PPU
5. The Moon
I honestly get kind of disgusted when I think about how modern marth mains try to use him, ughghghghghgh.

Besides being my favorite smasher, you're one of my favorite people. It's stupid to try and sugar-coat stuff. The truth is justice, and sometimes, the truth hurts lol. Keep up the honesty, it is the best policy :V

Thanks, I have no idea who you are but it is always nice to hear someone appreciate honesty in this world where most people take the easy way out and lie :v

What music do you listen to

I could only describe my music taste as bipolar. I will listen to any genre based on my mood, everything from classical to mindless techno, to one direction, back to heavy metal, to anime osts, to rap, and so on.
I will say that during BEAST4 losers I listened to some angry teenage punk just because of to try and channel all my anger/salt haha :>
If you want a taste you should tune in to my streams, I usually play whatever I feel like listening to atm so maybe you'll hear something you like ;D

Do you think you can make living out of esports one day? Should one pick up the more popular titles than smash to achieve that?

I know that I could, and yes, picking up other, a bit more established E-sports would definitely help to give yourself more publicity, thus making it easier to get a sponsor and so on.
Here's the thing though; I don't know if I want to.
E-Sports are fun, but I'm not sure if out of all the things in the world I want to spend my life doing this.
I already feel like I've grown apart from the smash community in several ways, and I felt this more than ever this last weekend at BEAST. You had to sleep on the floor, the toilets clogged/incredibly disgusting, no one doing the dishes, only a minority showering even though its a 5 day event (not kidding, had to move my chair because I couldn't sit next to some people while playing), how smashers treat women/other minorities and so much more...
I guess "quitting" smash in 2013 really gave me some perspective, and while I'm not planning to quit smash or marvel/KOF in the near future, unless some things really change, I think I'll be on to a new adventure a year or two from now :) Only time will tell though!

Other than fox, what is your best character?

Probably Falco, and then Marth. Before when I played melee much more actively (I play it around once a week) my secondaries used to be a lot closer to my main, but that was also partly due to me being lazy and never playing my main in friendlies.

Leffen, care to share a bit of how you train tech skills for Melee? I know you say you don't think you play much Smash at the moment, but you're still on such an insane level. I train a lot of movement when I have the time, but I'm afraid my training regime is not as optimal as it should be.

Try to tune into one of my streams in the near future, I'm going to try to go through how to do this as well. Always trying to improve your training regime is vital though, and don't be afraid to look at other, more developed (e-)sports for inspiration.

Do you think "Peak" Armada at about Apex 2013/Beast 3 could match up to you, Mew2King, PP, and Mango? Also who do you think is currently the best player in skill?

I think Armada would not match up well, getting worse is very rare for in smash, especially if you've remained decently active (which Armada definitely has, he probably played over five times as much as I did in the last year), so I find it hard to believe that he'd do well. And lets not forget Hbox ;)
Best player of all time relative to their time was Ken, then Armada imo. As for current highest skill level, I'd say its between PP and M2K atm, but I'll have surpassed them by EVO/MLG ;)

Who do you think will prove to be more difficult to beat between PP and M2K?

PP, simply because I haven't played him (with fox) yet. I've already played M2K, and I feel like I could win now by simply practicing a bit more on what I did wrong at Apex and refine the things I felt were working. PP on the other hand, since I haven't played him, I don't know quite as well how to beat him so training for him specifically might end up being a waste of time, so I'd rather just improve myself and beat him by raw skill difference, but that still makes it a bit more "difficult" in a sense.

Does beating Armada change any views you might have about Peach vs Fox at high level? People are already saying, "Peach is not viable". What do you think?

Peach is definitely viable, and the fact that it even has to be questioned both boggles my mind and makes me not want to bother to answer this question lmao. But oh well.
No, beating Armada did not change my thoughts on the matchup. I still think its 55-45ish in tournament setting.

You beat Armada's Peach and Fox but didn't beat Mew2king's Fox? What gives?

Not only am I constantly improving but you also can't really compare 2 games on PS to the experience I have vs Armada and how he plays. That said, I feel like I played very desperately vs M2Ks Fox, it being my first big top 8 match n all, but I worked on that problem and I felt much better both vs Colbol and Mango and at BEAST.

What's your opinion of aMSa? I know you hate "low tier heroes" but he seems more Taj level, with a good grasp of fundamentals along with his gimmicks.

I played yoshi and Amsa certainly does rely on his gimmicks but Yoshi also isn't low tier, only extremely ignorant people ever thought that. Relying on tech skill /gimmicks/flow charts is very common for mains of any character, so I don't really have any particular opinion about him doing it.

what do you think of falcon?

High tier character that has a very simple (note: not necessarily easy) playstyle. His potential is heavily hampered by the mindset of those who play him, which is sad.

What color are your eyes? Is that your natural hair color?

My eyes are mostly brown with a hint of green, and yep, I've never colored my hair so this is my natural hair color ;v

I can't uptrow then upair a Samus with my Fox. Any advice for the timing ?

That combo doesn't really work, except at some higher %

How is the food in Sweden?

It's pretty good, but I don't like the "traditional swedish food" all that much. Our candy is godlike tho.

Do you like trying to figure out how other people work? Not in the "casual categorization" sense, but in the "having a genuinely interesting conversation that helps you understand both them and yourself a little better" sense.

Yeah, I probably like doing this too much but it depends a lot on if I find the person I'm talking to is interesting. Talking to some people can be like reading a very dynamic book that's also constantly trying to read you. However, some people are the equivalent of a five year olds diary and there's nothing worse than being forced to read a boring book ;)

Have you ever done/considered doing modelling? I think you have a lot of potential in the male modelling industry. 100% serious.

Thanks, I have actually done a bit of it. It went pretty well but I don't really have the time or energy to pursue it atm, but we'll see in the future!

Do you have a big penis? I know swedes have large penises, and maybe the asian half sort averages that out.

.....................oh come on!

Is there one person in your life that can always make you smile?

yeah. me. I just move the muscles around my mouth and boom. smile.
....im dead inside ;_;

do you like beers? got a recommendation?

my recommendation is to drink beer while already drunk cuz me no like beer taste ;_;

Do you have any fox teams advice?

Your role totally depends on matchup and what team you play +your playstyle, get back to me with a more specific question.

I'm sorry to tell you, but you saying telling the truth always sounds rude. You should lie more often or atleast sound more positive when you write and talk to people.

You don't think I know this? I know full well that, for some reason, people are stupid enough to believe that people who are nice to you are telling the truth, and those who are "mean" (aka actually telling you when you're doing something wrong) are lying/being manipulative.
I more or less HAVE to lie/omit the truth in my daily life, but I'm not going to around being a fake during my hobby (fighting games).
I prefer having 0,5% like me for who I actually am and 99% think I'm literally Hitler compared to having everyone liking a version of me that's nothing but a lie.

How do you feel about the fact that you went from being the most hated man in smash to a really likable player?

Some people have always considered me "really likable", and I really didn't change any more after Evidence.zip than before.
Honestly, I think one of the biggest reason people's opinion has changed about me is because I just got more exposure which highlighted that, aside from trolling people on smashboards, I'm just an (incredibly) arrogant person, not a manipulative psychopath aka the devil himself that some tried to make me out to be. Well, at least not all the time ;)

Looking forward to see you vs Ice again at beast. Thats gonna be a crazy match. I guess both of you want to proof who is the best (in Europe) gonna be Hype!

I'm definitely not losing to anyone at BEAST (assuming I go) but honestly, doing well in Europe doesn't mean much at all these days. Sadly, the real competition is over in the US =/

Do you take apprentices? :3

I have/had a couple of "apprentices" and I frequently teach/answer people who ask questions, but through experience I've learned there's not much point in becoming my "apprentice" if you don't fit some specifics for it to be beneficial to both of us.
So unless you're very motivated, at least moderately talented, ready to take criticism, interesting to me and more importantly, ready to prove that you are all of the above, I simply won't be motivated enough to spend my time teaching you.
I know it sounds incredibly harsh/elitist or whatever, but if you've ever tried to extensively teach someone yourself you'll know that its not something to take lightly.

Also: I saw you practicing shield preassure vs Peach that was plugged in an constantly shielded, how do you do that?

My secret is pressing shield with my toes. Yeah...

Is this the real life, is this just fantasy?

I'm far past the point of caring, life is "pointless" anyway so I'll enjoy the moment regardless if its real or not :]

Will you be my facebook friend, please?

Desperation isn't pretty :> but if you really want it, give me a reason why ;)

Who is #1 on your Melee hit list? Is your Yoshi better than aMSa's??

#1 is probably Armada, not because of our drama but simply because I've yet to beat him and he's IMO the best of all time.
