Whoa what a stellar archive, thanks for linking us to it. I almost forgot the sheer number of 90s post hardcore out there just waiting to be discovered. You're right, they should, and I think that's exactly what almost every post hardcore band working today has been doing since they started because their musical upbringing consists of listening to seminal post hardcore acts from back in the day and going to their shows and, most importantly, being inspired to start bands of their own to carry the torch, so to speak. Of course, not all of them "made it" but those who did have created a scene that essentially grew out of the old one, and that's something to be celebrated because things could've easily gone the other way (which, to an extent, they have, but not in a particularly worrisome manner).

Choosing to start off with a Norwegian artist might suggest that I don't know what I'm doing, but I'll gladly take that risk any day if the music is this good. On the surface, the themes that Gunnufsen explores on Faen Kaja are not that far-removed from those explored by any number of singer-songwriters before her, but her uniquely millennial vocabulary and youthful exuberance make the lyrics stand out, even over the language barrier.
ANOHNI - Hopelessness (2016)

It's been almost a month since Hopelessness came out and I'm still trying to wrap my head around the lyrics and the messages they're meant to convey. It's a complex record that is filled to the brim with things to uncover and beauty to appreciate. The music might not be as accessible as you would want it to be, but once you've gotten used to it, you'll enjoy it that much more.

Tom Krell's voice is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated in modern R&B right now, but back in 2011 when his music was only popular among music critics and music bloggers, an EP of orchestral reinterpretations could've equally propelled or diminished his career, and what Just Once did was definitely the former. Krell's soulful falsetto soars beautifully over this 4-track EP's piano and string arrangements, adding an extra layer of humanity that is somewhat missing on his debut LP, Love Remains (2010).

Sekarang gw mau cerita dikit tentang rilisan terbarunya Autechre aja ya mengingat musiknya masih di ranah electronic walaupun ga se-beat-oriented dan se-accessible musik-musik electronic mainstream? Pada tanggal 19 Mei kemarin, Autechre merilis Elseq 1 - 5, sebuah kumpulan musik yang terdiri atas 5 bagian dan berdurasi sekitar 4 jam. "Kumpulan musik" karena Warp Records sebagai label rekaman yang menaungi Autechre belum memperjelas status Elseq 1 -5 hingga saat ini, namun para hardcore fans Autechre berspekulasi bahwa "Elseq" merupakan singkatan dari "Eleven sequel" yang berarti ia album no. 12 atau part ke-2 dari album no. 11 yaitu Exai yang dirilis di 2013 dengan "edited live sequences" sebagai kemungkinan lain yang berarti ia kumpulan musik yang dipilih dari satu atau lebih jam session yang dilakukan di studio atau di panggung.

Walaupun berminggu-minggu bakal berlalu sebelum gw menghayati keseluruhan materi yang terdapat di Elseq 1 - 5, gw sangat menikmati apa yang udah gw dengerin sejauh ini, terutama Elseq 1 dan Elseq 4 yang menurut gw mengandung beberapa karya terbaik Autechre sejak tahun 2000an. Elseq 1 terkesan seperti gabungan antara Confield (2001) dan Untilted (2005) di mana beat-beat yang glitchy serta abrasif menyembunyikan momen-momen melodik singkat yang sangat, sangat rewarding apabila "ditemukan" sementara Elseq 4 mengingatkan gw kepada lagu-lagu dari Exai (2013) yang ter-influence oleh musik ambient dan bisa dibilang "emosional". 2 track favorit gw sekarang yaitu "foldfree casual" dan "latentcall" terdapat di bagian ini. "foldfree casual" memanjakan telinga dengan progresi chord synthesizer yang menenangkan hati dan pikiran sebelum merecokannya dengan noise-noise random yang muncul di pertengahan durasi sementara "latentcall" terkesan seperti apa yang akan terjadi apabila seorang produser ambient / noise a la Tim Hecker menginkorporasikan elemen-elemen IDM ke dalam musik mereka yang pada umumnya tanpa beat.

Even though I really, really love Oasis' early stuff, I think their overall discography pales in comparison with Radiohead's in terms of consistency of quality and progression. In my opinion, Radiohead are more inclined to experiment with their sound and maintain a sense of freshness with each new release, whereas Oasis were always content with the sound that they started with so they just recycled it over and over until the end, and there's nothing wrong with that. I'm just more drawn to the former. Here are some of my all-time favorite tracks by both bands, what are yours?

Begitu ngedenger track 1 "Road of Resistance" rasanya tuh ini lagu bener-bener sebuah penyambutan memori yang bisa dibilang ini loh gue kembali membawa kenangan yang dulu lo pernah rasain bareng kita haha. Nuansa jpop dilagu ini paling beda dari keseluruhan track di album ini, entah kenapa bikin gue kangen mereka terus langsung buka foto2 mereka beberapa tahun lalu haha.

Entah kenapa gue langsung menetapkan track 3 "Awadama Fever" sebagai track favorit gue di album ini padahal baru denger intro-nya aja haha. Kenapa ya, nuansa breakcore yang walau cuman sesaat pun lumayan asik aja gitu tempo pas ciamik. Udah gitu di track 4 "YAVA!" kedengeran kocokan gitarnya ada yang agak sedikit berbeda nih haha ada yang nyangkut "cengecet, crengcet" gitu deh pada ngerti gak? haha

Track 7 "From Dusk Till Dawn" pas sih penempatannya, disaat udah mulai agak bosen dengerin dari track 1-6 disini lah titik kita dikasih "istirahat" sedikit dengan suguhan nuansa baru. Soalnya secara perlahan mulai dinaikin lagi nih temponya di track 8 & 9. Agar supaya track 10 "No Rain, No Rainbow" bisa berperan seolah seperti "last song" dari album ini dan para pendengarnya secara dalam hati akan teriak "Ankōru!! Ankōru!! Ankōru!!".

Dan kemunculan track 11 "Tales of The Destinies" itu benar-benar pas berperan seolah lagu untuk encore dan memberi kesempatan para pendengar untuk membuat wall of death / circle pit sebentar sebelum ada dentingan piano yang akan menyatukan kembali kawanannya, duh agak berat gak sih bahasanya hehe. Dan track 12 "THE ONE" sangat cocok dinobatkan sebagai lagu penutup baik di album ini ataupun di konsernya. Kenapa? Coba silahkan didengarkan sendiri aja aransemen beserta liriknya ya hehe, klimaks banget sih kalau menurut gue.

So far gue akan berikan 8.5 dari 10 point untuk album ini, yang paling gue suka itu flow tracklistnya yang bener-bener pas. Banyak band besar diluar sana yang lagu-lagunya enak juga tapi begitu dengerin albumnya secara berurutan tuh agak sedikit kacau urutan lagunya bikin mood juga agak bingung hehe.
