I appreciate him not trying to be DeLonge and just "retreating into the background", as it were. And his singing voice is roughly in the same register as Hoppus so it's not difficult to get used to his vocal contributions. Overall I'd say he did a pretty good job. Correction: Barker is also still in the band so Hoppus is not the sole remaining original member. After listening to it for a few times last night I can say I like the first half of the album more than the latter half because it felt more cohesive and was consistently very fun to listen to, which is not to say that there aren't standout tracks in the latter half ("Teenage Satellites", "Left Alone", and "San Diego" are some of the best songs they've written in my opinion). If I had to rate it right now I'd give it a 7/10.

I mean, I never go into any of their albums expecting to be blown away by some avant-garde piece of music that is rich with artistic value or something like that because they're not that kind of band. People love Blink-182 not because of how "innovative" their music is, people love them because they make fun, relatable, and catchy music that appeals to their sense of nostalgia and youth, which is what I've been getting from California and it's been great so far. As for Neighborhoods, I don't think the sound was fresh at all to be honest. I get how it might seem that way though because DeLonge was clearly still on his Angels & Airwaves shit when they were writing the album which probably led to the inclusion of some electronic flourishes here and there, but the end product stayed true to the Blink-182 formula all the way down to the lyrics and the aforementioned electronic flourishes became nothing more than a fleeting gesture.

They're both pigeonholed into shoegaze and have shared a band member, so your observation is strongly justified. But I don't necessarily agree. The majority of Whirr's music are straight up My Bloody Valentine worship as evidenced by the excessively processed guitar sounds, simplistic drum patterns, androgynous vocals, and heavy emphasis on atmosphere.

Nothing, on the other hand, borrow from 90s indie / alternative rock and punk in addition to early shoegaze which places them closer to bands like Ride, Swervedriver, and Hum. Like Whirr, they make beautiful soundscapes in which you can get lost, but you also have the option to just enjoy the music viscerally without putting too much thought into it, like you would a Dinosaur Jr. tune, for example.

No it's not. If you really mean it there's nothing to be ashamed of haha. But to answer your question with something music-related I would recommend albums that set a particular mood without sounding overtly happy or sad and are just ambiguous enough to let the listener put the pieces together in their own way, so to speak. That way the listening experience becomes more involved and the catharsis more genuine. A good example would be Nothing's Tired of Tomorrow, a beautiful shoegaze album that perfectly marries ambitious songwriting with emotional restraint, creating a cohesive piece of music into which you could pour your anxieties and feel better about yourself afterwards.

Let me say it on my personal opinion kay...

MP3 can exist in almost any quality up to 320kbps. FLAC exists in a higher quality, often around and exceeding 1000kb/s

.mp3s actually sound good if you compress them at 320 kbps/V0, but you can't do anything to a mp3 file to make it sound better so if you try to converting it to flac you just making garbage.

FLAC Tends to have clearer sounding Instrumentals, But 320 had better sounding vocals. So it seems alot of MP3 are mixed to exaggerate the vocals. I personally do not think FLAC (for my personal music library) sounds better. If you asked like for example six people to do blind taste tests and the results will be "It depends on the song". So for most people, with standard audio equipment such as ipod or a 99$ shelf stereo, MP3 is fine: there's no point having a high quality sound file if your equipment isn't of the same quality.

Mp3 formats are small and convenient which is good for on the go and saves space. But its all up to personal preference.

The relationship between us and our musical taste is rather complicated. With each new release listened, we fluctuate between understanding and not understanding it, paradoxically obtaining more and less insight into it at the same time. But for every single one of us there's an album out there that can interrupt the cycle, an album so life-changing and emotionally resonant that it can be no less than a revelation, an album you never knew you've always wanted to listen to. Deafheaven's 2013 sophomore effort, Sunbather is that album for me.

In the three years that I've listened to Sunbather religiously, I still find the narrative as relatable as the first time because it revolves around something that I will always struggle with; longing. Be it for an ideal lifestyle or a meaningful social component or a romantic relationship. Sunbather's protagonist is a man who carries the burden of his past mistakes and is unable to overcome his shortcomings, constantly reminiscing about his youth and regretting how the steps he took (and didn't take) have prevented him from enjoying the same pleasures ever again. So it's not that he's unwilling to change his situation, he's just convinced that his nature won't let him.

In order to properly deliver such a heavy narrative, the musical accompaniment must be equally impactful and reflective of its twists and turns. As principal songwriter, guitarist Kerry McCoy lets his brighter musical leanings seep into Deafheaven's atmospheric black metal sound, lending the compositions an emotional variety that would otherwise be restricted or even diminished. In the course of Sunbather's 4 primary tracks, shades of My Bloody Valentine are present as much as those of early Emperor and the 3 interludes encapsulate almost every era of post rock from the layered melodic progression of "Irresistible" that reminds me of early Explosions in the Sky to the ambient drone piece "Please Remember" that features Alcest's Neige reading a passage from Milan Kundera's The Unbearable Lightness of Being to the minimalist "Windows" whose inclusion of a field recording is a dead ringer for Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

One gets the impression that these disparate influences can't harmoniously coexist let alone complement each other, but they absolutely do on Sunbather and that's a testament to how passionately-crafted and well-realized it is. My list of all-time favorite albums will most likely change as I get older, but there will always be a spot reserved for Sunbather.
