I have always been a huge fan of map editors in games, They add endless hours of play time to a game, While the game does have a map editor currently, it does leave a lot to be desired... what kind of plans do you have for the map editor aspect of the game (if any)?

The map editor got a lot of upgrades for the 0.8 version, there are still features we miss, but it started to be usable.

Somewhere on the forum there's a discussion about "Factories", will there be any "Containers" or "2nd Floor"s or anything that will give player the option of having a designated area that is a bit more protected from the outside?

Probably not in the near future. At the moment the protection can be achieved by choosing a good place surrounded by water. There will be more unpassable terrains in the future (that you might even terraform - like rocks).

Any ideas about creating buildings/multiple floor factories?

Not in the near future. That is part of the game - what you see is what you got.

Is there going to be a way to automate wood harvesting (including planting maybe)? I've always felt that some originality in resource gathering is welcome (currently we have mining, logging and destroying alien bases, soon also pumping oil?), but wood is quite annoying to harvest manually.

Actually, there is already a mod that does that. It is called the TreeFarm mod and you can check the details at our forum: http://www.factorioforums.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=522. It is quite possible this will be put into the core game eventually, but the mod works good for now.

What about the idea of "Allies" in the game?

If you mean the concept of having alliance with the natives, it would be possible addition. The player would have to pay fees for the pollution and he could barter with the natives and pay them to get out of resource fields.

Why should transport belts and water pump work even without a power source?

Because the gameplay is more important than realism to us. Having to cover transport belts with electricity would add much hassle and very little interesting gameplay. Also the fact, that you can use transport belts before having electricity is nice.

Any ideas surging up on the combat system? Factorio is definitely about creating and managing your Factory but i feel that securing bases and expanding play an important part too. any chance for turret missile launchers, heavy duty vehicles and even intercontinental ballistic missile?

We believe, that when the player manages to run larger industry and gets late game researches, he should get more powerful toys to play with. Nuclear missiles, rocket turret missiles and other defensive/offensive tools are planned someday (not in the nearest future though). On the other hand we would like to restrict the usage of the turrets in the offension somehow.

Tutorials!!!! Would you have time to do a tutorial with the current (or 8.0) version of Factorio? The game teaches you quite well through the campaign but when you jump to a free play there's quite a gap in what have you learned to the full extend of the game

The new hope campaign was redesigned, it contains 4 levels instead of 2 and it tries to explain different parts of the game better (assembling machines -> research -> railway -> combat -> defense + blue potion factory).
The campaign still needs tweaks and extensions to concentrate on other subjects, like circuit network, logistic/construction robots and other details, but the gap should be at least smaller for now.

Hi, when you propose to use airplanes in the game? When did you integrated uranium to create a nuclear power plant, for example? Thanks. You're game is beautifull. Good luck.

Hello I had plan for some kind airplanes long time ago, but that is quite large subject that would have to be thought through first. (runways, automated airplane tranpsortation bombers etc). This is not on our roadmap that is full till the end of april. We shall see than. Nuclear power plant on the other hand will probably squeeze to the game in some of the upcoming releases. I'm glad that you enjoy our game.

there will be better railways - example faster trains?

AndrewJohnson251’s Profile PhotoAndrew Johnson
I can't deny it. Tier 2 railways and trains would be nice, but it would add another requirements, like auto upgrading of the tracks and trains and probably other things. If we decide to work on the railway, there are issues with higher priorities, like more comfortable ways of building tracks, pre signals, integration of the circuit network into the railway, copy of the train schedule, armored train etc.

You seem to be really community involved (woot!), How much impact do you feel the community has had in the shape and direction of the game? and do you think that will change as the community grows?

The impact is huge. The community gives us mainly 3 things we need. 1) Criticism, some of it is not always so pleasant to hear, but it helps us the most. Without good criticism, the first version of Factorio wouldn't be played by more people than few of our friends that were forced to :) 2) New ideas and perspectives. 3) Moral boost when. When people say they like the game, it gave us the enthusiasm to continue even in the harder phases.
We are thankful for all these things.

What made you to do this game?

I believe that every other programmer (at least) wants to do a computer game. I was accumulating lot of ideas in my head over the time, but the last impulse was me playing the Buildcraft. I started to try autonomous factories, but the Minecraft engine limitations were frustrating me. I also wanted to do it differently. I wanted to add strategy elements (starcraft), more variable logistics (ttd) and technological advancement (civilisation). The goal was just to make game tailored to my needs, so I can play something I can really enjoy. When other people enjoy it as well, it is a great bonus.

When Factorio will be on steam ?

As we mentioned, we plan to start the greenlight campaign this month, or january. The rest is hard to estimate. There is no guarantee we will get through, and I have no idea what kind of stuff would we have to do to get our game integrated into the steam.

Is nuclear power considered for a future release?

Ofcourse, that fits Factorio well. We had this in mind from the start.

I probably missed this somewhere, but how are capsules used?

You put these into the quickbar and access it by the shortcut (the number by default). It is described in the tips and tricks, I recommend going through it. This might change in some future versions, we considered to have alternative way of using them by just "building" the capsule on the place where you want to use it.

what would you call the single most important part of Factorio that makes it what it is?

The transport belts definitely. I always loved when transport belts appeared in some game, although you couldn't built these your way.

When are You planning to start the Steam Greenlight campaign?

Soon. The plan was to start during the december. But we want be prepared well, so it might be little bit later.

What language is Factorio programmed in?

C++, for the first 2 weeks I was making it in Java, but then I switched to C++. (The Java version is still in our repository and can be accessed ^^)

If Factorio Gets on steam (passes greenlight), Would the people that bought the game before hand be given the option of migrating to there steam account?

Yes.

do you think the game will ever get to the point where you no longer need to work on it? if so what will you do then?

We had a pub discussion about this few days ago.
We tried to imagine that we would release the final version someday and it would be done. And it was really hard thing to imagine. Terraria announced their last version one day. Half a year after that, they started to work on new version secretly. I guess, that after the needed vacation they wanted to continue. I guess that not because of the money, but because it just happened to be part of their lives, too important to be left aside. I could understand it very well.
But eventually we will finish, and who knows what will happen. Maybe we will start working on Factorio 2, or different game. Maybe we will move to mountains to hide away from the computers that we spent way too much time with :)

When will You relase multiplayer for factorio? :)

Our plan is to start working on the multiplayer after the 0.9 release. The 0.8 is planned for 6. december, so the 0.9 could be out in january. The estimated time for the first version of multiplayer is 2-3 months of 2-3 people (almost all the programming team). So the soonest imaginable date for multplayer is late April.

Will you ever try to implement caves and stuff under the normal level to the game?

This idea is floating around the game from the start. In the first versions of Factorio, all resources were "under" the terrain layer that had to be mined out first, but it was too much of a hassle to search for it. Something like underground mining drills might appear someday along with some deposit searching machines. The idea of caves was there as well, but the priorities are currently elsewhere.
