It is hard to improve your test scores when they are already so high. Do you take that into account?

Yes, that is true and we did take that into account. When the gain scores that measure improvement are calculated, students are compared only against other students with the same test score the previous year. So low-scoring students are compared to low-scoring students and high-scoring students are compared to high-scoring students. You can see in our rankings that schools with very high test scores to begin with can also score very high in growth.

Why aren't primary schools rated?

Schools that have at least two grades between Kindergarten and Fifth grade are ranked as elementary schools. Schools that are only early education/pre-k are not ranked because they don't have the same data.

Are PreK-2 elementary schools ranked?

Schools that have at least two grades between Kindergarten and Fifth grade are ranked as elementary schools. So yes, as long as we had all the necessary data a PreK-2 school would have been ranked.

Roberts Elementary moved down in ranking due to poor growth index. However, they are still at the top in the Achievement and Performance Indices. My daughter will be going there from this fall and I am not sure how concerned I should be about the growth index. Please advice. Thank you.

Roberts Elementary is an "A" school overall, which is outstanding. The Growth Index measures whether students are improving their test scores from year to year. While Roberts' growth score is perhaps lower than some of its peer schools, it still shows them to be above average in growth.

I couldnt find International Leadership of Texas in the ranking, why?

We try to rank as many schools as possible. However, in some cases we are missing some of the data necessary to calculate rankings for some schools, and they must be excluded.

How do school districts rank/"fair" up by the red river-i.e. Sherman, Dennison, etc.?

Check back for our statewide results being released on May 19th!

Would you/could you do rankings for special education?

That's a very interesting idea for us to look in to! Thanks for the feedback.

Why some High School are not in the ranking. Example Heritage High School of FRISCO TX or PLANO HIGH SCHOOL

We try to rank as many schools as possible. However, we are missing some of the data necessary to calculate rankings for some schools, and they must be excluded.

I wasn't able to locate the district rankings for 2013. Where are they located?

This is the first year that we have done district rankings.

which Staar test scores are included in your data for elementary- 3rd, 4th and 5th grades?

The STAAR data used is that for All Grades at the campus. So in elementary, yes, typically 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.

Why was there a big change in the method used from 2013 to 2014? It does not seem like the year to year ranking comparisons are valid with this change.

Each year we advise against any year to year ranking comparisons due to changes in the methodology.

Does your methodology look solely to STAAR Level III in determining the achievement portion of the ranking? Is it correct that a school with 100% of children meeting Level II criteria would fare worse than a school with, e.g. 80% Level II, 10% Level I, and 10% Level III? Thanks!

That is correct.

Why is Porter High (New Caney ISD) not listed in the rankings?

Some schools were missing data necessary in order to rank them. In those cases, schools had to be excluded.

rank school by districts

I can understand why that would be useful, and that is a good idea for us to consider doing in the future. If you download the excel files labeled "Full Data File" that are found on our website (http://childrenatrisk.org/research-data/school-rankings/), you are able to filter the file by district and then sort to see how schools rank within that district.

Why is cypress ranch high school in the cy-fair isd not listed?

Sometimes schools are missing state data that we have to have in order to run the analysis. If a school is missing data for one or more indicator, it has to be excluded. That was the case for Cypress Ranch High School.
This is the most frequent reason a campus is not found in our rankings.

When will you release the 2014 rankings?

The 2014 rankings will be released in the different metro areas between April 27th and May 18th.

Mitchell Intermediate ,the woodlands,Conroe isd

We were unable to rank Mitchell Intermediate school because it only serves 5th and 6th grade, and we need more data than that to rank it. We make an effort to pair intermediate schools with the junior high they feed into, but that's not always possible.

Could not find Rainard School on your lists.

The Rainard School is a private school, and we only rank public schools at this time.

Can not find the ranking for Aguirre Jr High on Channelview ISD.

Aguirre Junior High School hasn't been ranked in the past because it was too new. We need several years of data to be able to rank a school. Look for it in our new rankings coming out this April!

Where can I find the master data base list you used for the map?

If you visit the School Rankings pages on www.childrenatrisk.org and scroll below the maps, you can download the "full data files". These files will have all the addresses used on the maps.

I am looking for the Rice School in HISD, but I do not see it on your list. What does that mean?

The Rice School can be found on the Middle School list, because it goes through grade 8.
