Hello!! Do you think it is possible for someone who isn't majoring in comms & new media to eventually do smth in that field? I'm interested in comms work but I would prefer studying econs in uni!!

Yes of course. It's still way too early to tell (considering you have yet to start school I assume). Try getting internships in Comms related jobs during your summer hols.

what kind of bags do people bring for rhex camp HAHAH

I would guess pretty much the same as you'd go to any other camps? I brought a large soft foldable duffel with wheels to RH when I first checked in so that I can stow it away in the top shelf.

are chances of getting into raffles hall v slim if you don't go for rhex??

It really depends on how many people applied and how strong the candidates each semester are? Your chances will likely be lower than those campers who went for RHEX as they'd have known who the key leaders of RH are.

Hey :) Do most uni students carry only their laptops around in campus for work? Or are there heavy textbooks or handouts to be carried around as well?

Depends on your preferences, tutorials and lectures you have? Also your major? I'm pretty sure Sch of Computing students require their laptop more than an Arts student. When I was in CNM, I usually write my notes on paper.

Hi! How was CNM like for you? Were there a lot of readings?

There are a few tracks in CNM such as design, PR, journalism and research. The theoretical modules such as Communication theories, research, cyber security and media law naturally have more readings. On a whole as a major, I felt that I did way less readings than my peers in Psychology or Sociology.

Hi! I'll be joining NUS this August and I'm thinking of staying in Raffles Hall. I'm just worried that there'll be too many engin people and I won't be able to find FASS kids like me around. Do you think that's a prevalent issue?

I was an FASS student and I did not feel any disconnect. It is really difficult to predict the culture each year because every year there is a new batch of residents. My advice is: make the most out of your hall stay, get out of your comfort zone and make friends.

I see! Was hall life in RH ever like boring or unexciting? Because I want to join a hall but I don't want to go all out and live a intense, party-filled life, yet I also hope to be able to get a fun and decent hall experience

My hall life was fulfilling in all aspects: I enjoyed my activities, my time away from home and made friends that I am still in touch today. Most importantly, you need to manage your time well amidst all your commitments. I think RH is a good choice if you're looking for the midpoint.

Hmmm do you perhaps know the difference between hall life in RH and KR? I've heard that KR is one of the more popular halls, but what makes RH different from halls like KR? Is it more laid back or smth?

It's hard to put a term and describe how hall life is different for each hall because the culture changes every year with every batch of new residents. Personally, I feel that RH is not as intense nor competitive as KR. You'll probably have a more packed schedule and likelier to find people to go party with at KR. At the end of the day, hall life is really determined by how much effort you put in.

Are people in RH generally as active in hall activities and stuff as people in other halls? Because I've also heard from some people that RH is kind of obscure and all

Typically, only 50% of slots are reserved for seniors (year 2 and above) in hall. Hence, to qualify for next year's stay, you will need to be an active resident and participate in activities. There are always activities happening - after all, if you are doing something, you would do something you enjoy right? To your question: you are required to be active if you want to stay in hall next year. It is a competitive situation so there are plenty of active residents. However, each hall comes with phantoms too: people who're not too concerned about their next hall stay. The perception is that RH's exterior is typically more "kampong" because of the lush greenery and red-bricked buildings.

Hello!! I'll be going to uni next year, and I was just wondering, how is hall life in RH like? I can't really find much info about that online because most of the info I find are about halls like KR and all!! How's the hall dynamics and all in RH?

Hi there, I'm guessing you came here from my blog. What exactly do you mean by hall life? It's quite a broad term. It's been a while since I'm there but I've always felt at ease at RH because it's not as intense as KR.

Why are people in hall so concerned with whether one is a phantom or not? What are your views on this?

I guess the mindset is that since you make a decision to stay in hall, you should be actively contributing to hall and not be a phantom that takes up an additional space which could be freed up for an active contributor. I think the hall system is an effective filtering method that filters out phantoms so I'm not too concerned about them. In any case, I wouldn't know who these phantoms are anyway since they hardly appear,

Hi, may I know what to bring to hall and did you use a luggage?

Yes, I used a luggage plus some storage boxes from Ikea.

Is hall stay overrated? I have no idea if I should spend the money on it :(

Well, if you're a typical Singaporean, hall and/or exchange are the only opportunities you get to stay away from home. Exchange is further down the road and is really dependent on a multitude of factors which may be out of your control which makes hall (other than the finance) a more attainable option.

Hi! I applied for a double room as my choice and the application status shows 'offered'. May I know if this means I got into the hall only or does it mean I got double room as well? Thank you!

I think it means you got your double room in that hall (If I recall correctly). The hall office should be opened on Monday!

Which are the more difficult halls to get in?

Usually Eusoff, Temasek and Kent Ridge though it may have changed in the recent years.

What are my chances of getting it though? I really really want to get in! ):

Not too sure what situation you're in?
1. You don't have an offer and you want to appeal: Really dependent if you have a skill that is valuable to the hall. Each year, the focus is different. Eg this year the hall may take in appeals only from sportsmen.
2. You have an offer and looking to switch to a single/double: Dependent if there is availability of rooms.
Drop me another question clarifying your situation perhaps?

I received my application results and I got single instead of double room. Is there any way I can appeal to a double room?

Yes of course, just drop Raffles Hall an email to check on availability.

HI there! Do I need to have dance experience to join RHDance? Thank you!! :)

No experience required to audition, in fact, a lot of RH dancers started dancing in hall. However, if you are appealing through RH Dance, that is a different case.

Hey! I'm currently in year 1 and thinking of majoring in communications in NUS. I'm quite worried about the hard skills required in the comms module so I hope to seek your advice on the extent to which technical skills like photoshop etc. is required. Thank you :)

Sorry I missed out your question and its late! There are numerous tracks within Comms & New Media in NUS e.g. PR, Design, Journalism, Research etc. If you're not technically driven, I'd advise to steer away from the design heavy modules, e.g. Visual Communications (if they still have them!). There are some modules (there used to be a NM3217) with introductory Photoshop which is quite useful.

Thank you for your answer. I'm worried because I'll be graduating next year and the future seems like a question mark. Hope this isn't too personal, but can you share more about the work you do now?

Hello, no it's not! If you have taken NM3219, that's basically what I do at work. I manage communications, that is traditional public relations, and social media. I try to create meaningful conversations and buzz for my company.
You sound rather hesitant about your future. I always encourage my juniors to make most of their time in school, try getting a part time stint perhaps to improve your employability. I took on a graduate internship even after I graduated because I didn't have the sufficient experience and that internship opened the doors to a lot of places after completion.
At the end of the day, I really don't think it is that tough to find an okay job. To find one that checks all boxes, yes that's tough. You must also be realistic with your expectations.
Hope things work out for you.

Was it easy getting a job with a major in CNM?

I think with CNM, especially, it is important to have substantial job experiences and internships to your resume because it is a very hands-on and practical industry. I don't think finding a job is that difficult with a CNM major because it is so broad, but finding a job that you truly love, enoy and pays enough, now, thats a tough one.

What course did you take in nus?

I was from the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences and majored in Communications and New Media. Three years, no honours.

What is (or was) your favorite class in school?

Mathematics duh. It is the bane of my academics
