do interviewers double check an applicant's answer in their interview by doing a background check on them?

B: HR usually only does a background check when they are close to offering the applicant a position. In my experience, the background check verifies educational background, past work experience and any anomalies (good and bad). Usually just the stuff in the resume and not from the interview.
That being said, you might get away with minor exaggerations, but not outright lies. Be very careful here. Don't say anything that can't be verified!
J: Experiences no, credentials yes. Don't say you graduated from Wharton Business School when all you took was an online correspondence course for 2 weeks.

For Betina: How long did you wait for P&G's call for an interview? Applied for the internship but it's been 2 wks since I got an email from them saying I passed the screening :(

Well, Justine and I are special cases cause we did P&G CEO Academy. One of the perks of joining was that we're first priority for the P&G Dream Internship Program*. So we technically heard back from them last October. Took the assessment test at their office early December and I did my 1st interview Feb 1. My 2nd interview is sometime in the next 2 weeks. 3 interviews total and they aren't releasing the results for a while, so I wouldn't worry too much if they take a long time to get back to you. The interviews are done by managers in the department you've applied for, so they're just scheduling you into whatever breaks they have.
*That might be the other reason that it's taking them a while to get back to you. CEO Academy participants (and possibly Marketing Masters participants) are supposed to be first priority, so I don't think the departments will start interviewing regular applicants until after they are done processing the CEO Academy participants.
