Can you recommend anything to read?

Effy
Depends what your interests are?
If you like history I recommend Ascendency to Oblivion by Michael McConville as it traces the decline and fall of the British aristocrats, gentleman, merchants and so on who used to dominate Ireland.
It is shaming for me to think of the wrongs that were done there by the empire, which my heroes Mr Gladstone and Mr Asquith tried albeit unsuccessfully to right, and it's a really gripping book.

What hobby would you get into if time and money weren’t an issue?

I'd be a full-time postgrad student (history) and part-time photographer.
http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/photos would employ all the time not spent on the Home Rule Crisis of 1912-14 and I'd have a whale of a time, working hard but for fulfiment rather than in the desolating office job I have now.

If you were going to write a book, what would you call it and what would it be about?

Effy
I'd call it The Old House and it would be about the long-distance walks and churchgoing I do in different places each Easter.

If you could time travel, would you go to the future or the past?

Effy
I'd go to the 18th century and watch the industrial revolution from Arkwright's mills at Cromford, Boulton's factory in Birmingham

Arbaham Darby's steelworks, the Iron Bridge, the Duke of Devonshire's mines at Ecton, and everything.
I'd be a great Whig aristocrat living between 1745 who went round eating, drinking and observing things but doing no work. Then die in a cavalry charge at Waterloo. That would be a fascinating 70 year life.

If you had lots of money what would you do with it?

Retire, then move to Birmingham to be nearer my girlfriend and enrol at the university, doing my MA (and PhD?) and spending a lot more time with culture, travel and doing my blog.

I definitely wouldn't be a wastrel or idler as I'd still be working hard, but towards a fulfilling goal rather than just to make ends meet!

⚠️ I still sometimes get “crossed wires” when communicating by text or online, and it was the same when I used email regularly. On a scale of 1-5 how well do you think you communicate online? Are you always understood, and do others always understand your meaning?

CactusDoug’s Profile PhotoDoug
Probably 7. I can convey my meaning well enough and people generally what I'm saying, which I hope is interesting.

I am a bit too Anglocentric though so people from around the world or non-native speakers may not understand everything I say.

Most important in a date: Intelligent or Funny?

Effy
I do think stupid people can't be truly funny and truly intelligent people can't be unfunny?

If you dont like getting questions from me let me know. If you do like it and want more then put ??

Effy
I like your questions mate, I'm too old-school to understand how to put emoticons in here but this is a thumbs up.
I may not always answer and I apologise to you and anyone else for that but I'm not ignoring you, it's just that I don't always know what to say?

How often do you listen to the radio? What is your favorite radio station?

Effy
Radio 4 is my favourite!
Each week I listen to The Week in Westminster, From Our Own Correspondent, The Food Programme and World This Weekend. I listen to the news as often as possible and lots of ad hoc programmes if I like the sound of them and I never fail to listen to The Archers.
I think Radio 4 totally vindicates the license fee for the BBC, which conservatives hate and want to sell to Rupert Murdoch so they can have a British Fox 'News' and American-style hate radio.
When, even though I'm left-wing myself, I wouldn't regard a shouting, left-wing show full of adverts (MSNBC, CNN etc) as being any better than a shouting, right-wing show full of adverts. I want intelligent speech radio which is what I have... For now.
I know this is a bit Anglo-centric but I do recommend the Archers to everyone as it's terrific!

Do you prefer a bath or shower?

Effy
Normally a shower as they are invigorating, but yesterday I was ill and had a bath and it was nice and relaxing, Normally I don't like relaxing so it's a shower 90% of the time.

Do you have art or pictures on your wall? PAP!

Effy
I'm not at home but I have maps of the British Isles, Europe, and the world on my walls as I like geography and I like thinking about the places I'd like to go to.

kentucky fried chicken?

There has been a KFC half a mile from where I live since 1999; I went there when it first opened but haven't had KFC since.
I just find it too fatty & greasy for my liking. And I don't like all the sauces & salads. I prefer something I've cooked myself with none of the above.
