Do you have an item that you’ve kept since childhood that you’d never want to part with? For example a trinket or stuffed toy or letter or something? (I’ve had a few over the years but the more I get attached to anything it develops a talisman-like value and I inevitably mysteriously lose it).
Have you ever had a teacher that was just really "different" (good or bad) from all the others you've had? Do you have any stories about said teacher(s) to share?
Well I've become angry at the way I was "taught" art at school. If you look at my website, http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/photosYou can hopefully see that I've got an artistic sense.Yet my art teachers treated me like some kind of idiot because I had no aptitude for the way they "taught" it. They never considered that I might have responded better if taught in a different way, just assumed I was no good at art, probably due to stupidity. When I was 27 I saw an exhibition by Hockney. http://www.davidhockney.co And that launched my interest, but why did it not happen before? That's what I have a lot of problems with.
There are plenty of fun/interesting/weird etc. fictional characters out there that I'm sure you'd love to meet and/or be friends with, but can you tell me about a fictional character you personally think would be super boring to know in real life?
Arnold Bennett is one of my favourite authors. http://www.arnoldbennettsociety.org.ukHis charachters Henry Earlforward the miser and Darius Clayhanger, who had dementia, have really helped me understand my granddad, who is both these things. But I'd imagine just about all his charachters would be boring to meet, even though I like reading about them!
Probably a history museum, my favourite which is a neglected local gem (it's hardly ever open!) is this. http://www.bethesda-stoke.infoThis pretty much has it all, and my favourite generalist museum is this. http://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/bmagWhich, since I've got the afternoon off, I'm going there with my girlfriend today!
Should you for some reason have to vacate your home extremely quickly (say within 5 minutes) and you could grab ONLY 4 items prior to leaving, what would you grab?
"Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned" BuddhaOr a Christian perspective? "Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good"This is a highly complex thing and I think it means rising above, not retaliating, and being the bigger person.I'm only human and I may fail to do this but I do hold it up as my ideal.
Is this some kind of youth slang that I'm not down with (Ironically, a teenager probably wouldn't recognise this meme, proving the overarching point)
Imagine you lived in a world where everyone has a shield/crest to represent and identify them. What three symbols would you have on yours? (You can add a colour scheme should you wish!)
Since I made a trip to the Ancient Egypt section of the museum in Birmingham I've been a full-on follower of Thoth :) https://www.ancient.eu/Thoth/ So some kind of crest that combines writing, wisdom and the moon, though I'm not 100% how this can be done.Them keys are quite good as well
Hey guys and squad! :)
For you: What make you feel genuinely happy?
-Stay classy awesome peeps-
Doing some genuinely useful & contructive work, a feeling I certainly don't get in my day job.The best example of this was my planting trees in the Highlands of Scotland. It was hard work, so hard that most people at home had no idea why I did it, but so rewarding.www.treesforlife.org.ukThe first group of people to do such work came in 1991 and planted these trees, a picture of which I enclose. And they had to fence the trees of to stop them being grazed to death by deer. It could have been dispiriting to see a bare, treeless hillside, but when I felt down I could just look at how well these trees grew and think my own efforts would lead to this one day. That, and the people, all of whom had chosen to be there, were an excellent crowd and I'm definitely going back.http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/scotland
I’ve slowly been clearing out, and here and there have stumbled across various unopened packs of shower gel presumably from Xmases passim. They’re now piled in the bathroom and will save us buying any for some time. So, my question: currently, what do you have too much of?
Certainly not, if you're having problems you should state your position and leave the relationship as a last resort, if necessary. And if you're interested in swinging you should also state that and only have partners who know & accept this.
As a rule I feel I have too much interaction with, for instance, my work colleagues, with whom I wouldn't ideally be spending so much time, so I don't really want more.I would like to be able to spend more time with my friends and my girlfriend but after a day/week at work I'm often not up to it. So a kind of loneliness comes from being surrounded by people, but not the people I'd have chosen for myself, and not seeing my people often enough. But mostly, during me time, I'm so relieved to be away from everybody that bothers me that I don't have the thoughts you discuss here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKgj1FNToWY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKgj1FNToWY
How do you treat/deal with the following types of unsolicited visitors to your home?
1. Trick-or-Treaters?
2. Salespeople?
3. Religious evangelists?
4. Christmas Carol Singers?
5. A stranger needing to use your ‘phone?
Well my brother usn't exactly renowned for his humility & modesty, so once he went to the local pub where we grew up & was antagonising some people."You think you're so much better than us, don't you?" said one youth."Yes" came the reply. When I think back on this I think that I'd never say that to someone, but I might think it, and despite still living here I would never go to that pub in the first place. So I don't know if my attitude is actually as bad as his.
if you don't want to celebrate Halloween that's more than fine but its not an "American thing". i don't know why haters keep saying this. the origins aren't American
The form in which it's celebrated has little or nothing to do with British tradition, I appreciate that people celebrated All Saints Day (and before that Beltane) but that doesn't have any real connection to what people will be doing on the 31st of this month.I certainly shan't be answering the door to any young bleeders that come round!
Great, I've been to Edinburgh a few times, not seen anything like enough of the city but I love what I've seen. http://dry-valleys.tumblr.com/tagged/edinburghHave you read Justified Sinner by James Hogg? If you like spooky goings-on at Arthur's Seat you'll love it!
Well the first job I had was working in a warehouse that distributed CDs and DVDs, including porn. The very first thing I ever did for wages was load 80 copies of a single "I believe in a thing called love" by The Darkness (I hate them). So I did think this wasn't a very fun introduction to the world of work.Sorry if this isn't interesting but I've never done anything that wild!
