a prequel to the daomu series set around early 1900 around the downfall of the qing dynasty / minguo era - world war 2, there are plenty of talks about the anti-japanese movement too. it's really just a string of random unconnected stories about the nine tomb raiding families (whose descendants runs the daomu series) that monopolizes changsha, so if you're doing business esp antique u only have to pass through one of these nine "gates". and by ranking we have the:
upper:
zhang da foye / zhang qishan (william chan) - he is basically their leader, related to the zhang qiling(s)
er yue hong (yixing) - he is a flower drum opera singer (danjiao) and the leader of that theatrical troupe who are all tomb raiders as well, he is also xie yu chen and chen pi a si's master.
ban jie lie - he was handicapped (legs) from a previous tomb raiding incident
middle:
chen pi a si - he's really brutal i dont like him that much lololol
wu lao gou - wu xie (lead of the daomu series) grandad, he lost his sense of smell, he has a tibetan spaniel by his side
hei bei lao liu - just ur usual lonely swordsman who became crazy after and got shot to death
lower:
huo xian gu - (heard janine chang is picking up this role) the only female in the house go girl power! she loves wu lao gou but he married someone from the xie family ouch
qi tie zui - a good fortune teller
xie jiu ye - he went to japan to study, he is very calculating

i would translate it as Old Nine Gates (but the official baike says Old Nine Door lol) bc there were plenty of stories how their name came about, the most plausible one would be bc they were likened to the 9 inner city gates of ancient Beijing when doing business (these still exists at that time since the prequel was set during late Qing dynasty)
